HHS September Letter from Administration

Dear Parent/Guardian and Student,

Thank you so much for the great start to our school year!  September is going to be an exciting month with a lot to participate in.  On September 21st, we have our Back to School Night.  Connections Credit Union will be providing BBQ hot dogs from 5:30-6 pm and then teachers will be available to visit in their classrooms from 6:30-7:30 pm.  We hope to see you here at HHS! The annual Black and Blue Bowl (HHS vs. PHS football game) will be at the Holt Arena on Friday September 23rd at 8:15 pm.  Freshman and JV will play the nights previous.  See the events schedule below for details.

One of our school goals is to help each student connect with an adult here at school.  This will be someone a student can turn to for questions, concerns, support, etc.  As a result each student will be assigned an advisor.  Through the month of September they will meet with this advisor on Mondays for about 20 minutes with the other students assigned to the same advisor.  Regular attendance procedures will apply to advisory, including absences, tardies and truancies.  The goal of advisory is to continue to build positive relationships with students and to teach skills essential for success in every avenue of life.

The bell schedule for Advisory Mondays will be as follows:

1st Period       8:27am-9:30am
ADVISORY   9:35am-9:55am
2nd Period     10:00am-10:58am
3rd Period      11:03am-12:01pm
LUNCH         12:01pm-12:36pm
4th Period      12:41pm-1:39pm
5th Period      1:44pm-2:42pm

Another goal we have this year is to support students and parents/guardians for life after high school. 

We will strive to prepare students for college and/or career success.

This year each of the high schools was able to hire college and career advisors. At Highland we have 2 advisors-Mrs. Greening and Ms. Smith.  The advisors are a great resource.  

Their purpose is to:

1) help students and parents/guardians navigate higher education-financial aid, scholarships, grants, application processes, etc

2) help students navigate career readiness-job fairs, resume building/writing, job applications, interviewing, etc.

3) educate parents/guardians and students about how to prepare for life after high school.

They have already been working hard.  They have organized with the College of Idaho to come visit our students at HHS on September 13th and Boise State on September 20th.  We want to help all students prepare for their post-secondary goals.

Finally, as expected, we are dedicated to supporting students with their academics.  In order to support students we will be offering regular tutoring sessions.  Students can attend tutoring voluntarily or they may be assigned.  If students are assigned, a parent/guardian will be notified.  The math tutoring schedule has already been organized:

Please come and support our students at the events they are participating in this month.  It should be a great month.  Again, for any questions or concerns please call or come in and visit.  If you see us at an event please come visit or say hi.  If there is some more information you would like included in these letters, please let us know.
