Dear Highland Parent, Student, and Ram Supporter,

Highland has been approved to get turf at Iron Horse Stadium. Work on the turf will start in May and hopefully it will be ready for the fall. This will greatly benefit our programs at Highland and our community. Not only can this be used for soccer, marching band, and of course football, but possibly other community club activities such as lacrosse. We are excited at how this will benefit our students and our community with both practices and competitions.

Highland Elective/Extra Curriculars Fair and Academic Planning

On Monday February 6th we will be hosting a parent/student elective and extra curricular fair from 6-7:30pm at Highland High School. Students will be introduced to the different elective and extracurricular options they can have while at Highland High School and in Pocatello/Chubbuck School District #25. This presents incoming freshman, new students to Highland, and students currently attending Highland with ideas for what to signup for in their academic planning sessions and to receive information about the sports, activities, and/or clubs they are interested in. Then, for Incoming Freshman and new students, on March 13th, 14th, and 15th parents will sign up for a session to participate with their student in academic planning sessions and will put the classes and programs the student is interested in, into their academic planner. The school then uses this to build the school schedule and students individual schedules. Next years sophomores, juniors, and seniors will have the chance in school to revise their academic plans. More information will be sent out as this date gets closer.

School Dance

The Snoball dance is coming up on February 4th 8-11pm in the Highland Cafeteria.Tickets are now on sale in the Bursar’s office. The cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple, price goes up if you buy at the door. This is a girl ask guy dance. The theme is pick your favorite decade to dress like, for example the 20’s, ,50’s, 70’s, 80’s, whatever decade you like. Put it on your calendar, Snowball Dance Feb. 4th.

STEM Diploma Designation:

The Idaho Legislature recently passed a bill allowing for a STEM designation to be included on a student’s high school diploma.  Students who successfully complete all graduation requirements established by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District may receive a high school diploma designated as a STEM diploma if they meet the following criteria:

·         Complete eight (8) credits in mathematics

·         Complete eight (8) credits in science

·         Complete five (5) additional credits of the student’s choice in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.

Students who are interested in applying for the STEM diploma designation can see the Registrar for an application.  Applications must be completed and returned to the Registrar prior to May 1, 2023. All students who qualify for the STEM designation will receive a seal on their diploma, notation of designation on their final transcript, cords to wear at graduation and the opportunity to apply for a $3,000 scholarship. 

STEM Diploma Scholarships: DUE February 1, 2023

Students in Idaho who earn a STEM Diploma are eligible to apply for one of ten, $3,000 scholarships provided they will be attending an Idaho post-secondary institution, including career technical schools, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The STEM Scholarships will be offered in the following fields: Advanced Manufacturing, Agriculture, Computer Science/Technology, Engineering, Food Sciences, Health Sciences, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and General STEM (2).

Second FAFSA Night – Mark your calendar:

Thursday, February 2^nd -- Library

One FAFSA Night is real good; two FAFSA Nights are even better. Students applying for scholarships, financial aid, and some student loans will need to complete the FAFSA (the Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Our second FAFSA Night at Highland will be Thursday, February 2nd, from 6 to 8 pm, in the Library. Food will be served. There will be school staff and ISU professionals there to help.

Bring:

Ø  Yourself and a parent or guardian (if it's possible to bring a parent / guardian).

Ø  Your personal email address.

Ø  Fully charged phone for you AND your parent or guardian.

Heads up! Seniors who have applied and been admitted to the University of Idaho will have the opportunity to sit with our admissions rep, Andres, on Monday, February 27^th, all morning. This will be the time for students to establish their Vandal account, review their financial aid and scholarship webpages, apply for housing, and look ahead to orientation and academics. Please mark your calendars, and be ready to sit with Andres Zamora and prepare for your next University of Idaho steps.

We are fortunate to have a world-class and world-known center for science, stem, energy, and defense in our own backyard: the Idaho National Laboratory. Their summer internships for high school students (which is fabulous, all by itself) will be posted next month. You can go to the URL below to learn more, but note it is dated 2022. Highland is now selling family passes that include all home events for the school year, even football games! (Tournaments playoffs, state, and events at the other high schools in the district not included).

Family Passes are $250 for 2 adults and 4 children(14 and under)

                             $125 for 1 adult and 4 children(14 and under)

 Here are the individual costs of tickets for the 2022-23 school year:

Attendance Review/Reminder

At this point in the school year attendance can become an issue. Here is a reminder about the Highland Attendance Procedures. 

Students are expected to be in each class, in their seat, on time, ready to learn, every day.  Attendance is one of the most essential pieces in receiving an education and preparing students for future success in college and/or career. Not attending, or being late to class, results in missing valuable information and makes it extremely difficult for student learning to occur. 

Students are expected to attend 90% of the time. Students who miss 10% or more of class time will be subject to school attendance disciplinary procedures. 

A parent/guardian has 3 days to provide medical documentation to the school following a medical visit in order to verify the absence, otherwise the absence will remain coded as “absent.” 

Student Absences at the Secondary Level

Students are allowed 5 unexcused absences in a trimester without a consequence. On a student's 6th unexcused absence they will receive a truancy. Additional truancies will be issued for continued unexcused absences.

Attendance reports are reviewed at least once a week at which time truancies, the assigned consequences, and notifications are distributed. 

If a student is going to be absent for extenuating circumstances, please contact school administration in order to minimize the impact on the students education.  

Students that are truant or suspended out of school may only make up work at the discretion of the teacher and/or an administrator.

Student Tardiness at the Secondary Level

Students who arrive late disrupt the learning environment of the classroom. Tardiness at the secondary level is a condition for which a student arrives less than 15 minutes after the start of class. Any student who is tardy beyond 15 minutes of class time may be reported as absent or truant. The Teacher and/or Attendance Clerk are responsible for monitoring and recording student tardiness. Beyond possible teacher consequences assigned for tardiness, every 5 tardies in a class period is considered a truancy.  

Truancies and Assigned Consequences

Whether a student is found truant from a class or classes, has excessive absences leading to truancy, or has excessive tardies leading to truancy, the attendance issues will all be added together and result in the following consequences=

Truancy 1	Warning and notification given through email, and text from school administration of potential consequences for continued truancies.
Truancy 2	Warning and notification given through email, text and letter from school administration of potential consequences for continued truancies. Student conference with school administration, community service, or additional consequences may be assigned by school administration.
Truancy 3	Warning and notification given through email, text, and letter from school administration that the student has 5 days to submit an appeal and must also adhere to the criteria of the appeal or the student will receive an additional truancy, community service may also be assigned.
Truancy 4	Notification given through email, text, and letter from school administration.  Possible student suspension from school. Students 15 or younger will be referred to the School Resource Officer for a citation for habitual truancy and may receive additional consequences.   Students 16 and older will lose credit and will be unenrolled from the class or classes in which they have multiple truancies.
Truancy 4+	Notification given through email, text, and letter from school administration. Possible student suspension from school. Possible District Discipline Hearing.  Possible Unenrollment.

STEM Diploma Scholarship for Seniors – Deadline is Feb. 1^st !

Students in Idaho who earn a STEM Diploma are eligible to apply for one of ten, $3,000 scholarships provided they will be attending an Idaho public, post-secondary institution, including career technical schools, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The STEM Scholarships will be offered in the following fields: Advanced Manufacturing, Agriculture, Computer Science/Technology, Engineering, Food Sciences, Health Sciences, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and General STEM.

This scholarship requires a brief essay, two letters of recommendation, and the deadline is a hard one. If students want to apply for the STEM Scholarship, they need to start on it today

Scholarships – Idaho Schools & Next Steps

The best scholarship money for Highland graduates is first at the schools / colleges / programs to which students have been accepted. The CCAs are glad to help students navigate the financial aid or scholarship webpages at various schools. Most colleges need you to actively accept scholarships, so don’t hesitate to ask for assistance with the various processes. We don’t want you to miss out and lose money on the table.

After institutional money, follow the link below to Idaho scholarships on the Next Steps website. At last check, there were 175 of them, but some of the submission dates have already passed. Please note:

·         Pay attention to deadlines.

·         Often the “Learn More” tab has details you need; be sure to click on that.

·         There are many scholarships (most local or regional to Idaho, some are national, such as the Foot Locker Scholarship).

·         You can use a keyword search on the left-hand side of the page.

Construction Combine -- Save the Date

The Construction Combine – an opportunity for high school students to get a primer on a variety of construction skills and gain more knowledge about the construction trades– will be back this spring in cooperation with ISU’s Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Training, local builders, tradespeople, and home improvement stores. At the conclusion of the two-day event, students also have the opportunity to be hired for summer work by local contractors.

An application will be available soon, and we will post a link to it on this blog. Students must be in good academic standing, must commit to the full two days of the Construction Combine in order to be school excused, be prepared with appropriate clothes and shoes, and agree to work professionally and cooperatively throughout the experience.
