HHS 11/1-11/7/17

Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,

 We want to formally invite the Highland faculty, parents, students, and other community members to come and enjoy a wonderful showing of DRACULA! Put on by Highland's drama students and teacher Mr. Ted Bonman. It will be a fun show. Hope to see you there on November 2, 3, 4, or 6th.


The School Board decided on a name for the Pocatello School District Athletic Stadium located behind Highland High School. The name they elected is Iron Horse Stadium, representing the long standing influence and history of the railroad in the Pocatello community. We have recently received several calls and inquiries regarding a rumor of boundaries being enforced for the high schools in our community. Currently, a committee made up of school administrators, district administrators, parents, and other community leaders has been formed to discuss the situation of school choice and boundaries for our high schools in our community. No decisions have been made and the committee is just beginning its discussion.

 Reminder to parents and students. The closer we get to the end of the trimester, please make sure you are checking infinite campus regularly. Tutoring is available every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after school from 4-5:30.  Please see the academic calendar for room numbers. If students fail a class during the school year, they may not be able to retake that class again during the year. With 1600 students, class sizes are often full and adding a student who already took the class may not be a possibility. Students who fail a class, may be required to attend summer school to make it up. If the student is a senior then they will not be able to walk with their class during graduation. 

Herff Jones will start taking orders on Wednesday, November 1st.

We are proud of Cross Country finishing strong at the state meet at Eagle Island in Eagle, ID. Girls finished with 9th place and Boys with 10th place. Great season! Swimming and Football will be competing in state competition this week. Swimming heads to Boise to the State Meet on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Boise Aquatic Center, while Football plays in the Quarter Finals v Capital in the Holt Arena this Friday at 8:15pm. If football wins they will head to Boise next Friday to take on the winner between Rocky Mountain and Eagle in the Semi-Finals. Also, how about our amazing Marching Band! Their hard work is an inspiration and has been paying off by winning awards in every competition they have participated in this year. Most recently last Saturday taking 2nd at the Mt. Timpanogos Marching Invitational in Pleasant Grove, UT. 

With fall sports wrapping up, Speech and Debate have already gotten underway competing at Pocatello High School and Centennial High School in Boise. They are also competing this weekend at Hillcrest High School. Girls Basketball Tryouts are also underway with Boys Basketball and Wrestling beginning in the next couple of weeks.  Winter Activities here we come! 

Recently Highland High School administration met with Pocatello High School and Century High School administration to ensure we are following the same procedures regarding finals.  As a result there have been some adjustments with how Highland handles checkout procedures on the days of finals to align more closely with the other schools.  

Students will remain in class during finals and will not be able to checkout during class time. This time has been reserved for students to complete finals and will be protected as such.  This will minimize distractions and create the best possible environment for assessment.  All the high schools in the district seek academic excellence and creating an appropriate environment for assessment is essential in helping students perform at their best.  

The question then becomes, "Can I check my student out during finals?"  The answer is, not during class time.  If there is an emergency then school administration will determine how to respond and will work with those involved.  Dental appointments or other doctor appointments do not count as emergencies and the school expectation is that these appointments will need to be rescheduled when they do not infringe on the time dedicated for finals.  Please call the school and speak with school administration with questions or concerns.

Be sure and purchase your $2 Ticket or Tickets for the Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello Raffle benefiting Athletics and Activities.  Last year a Pocatello High School parent won a brand new Dodge Dart all expenses paid including taxes.  Over $56,000 was raised for school activities in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District in last years raffle.  Support athletics and activities again this year and buy raffle tickets for $2 for the chance to win a new Jeep Renegade worth $25,000 donated by Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can buy.  All expenses for the car are covered, including taxes.  All proceeds go to school athletics and activities.  Tickets are on sale until May 21, 2018 and the drawing will take place at the new Lithia Dealership in Pocatello on May 31, 2018.  Contact the school bursar to buy tickets (208)237-1300 and/or look to buy tickets and see the car on display at home events throughout the school year.

HHS 10/23-10/31/17

Coming up on Friday October 27th during school there will be a meeting for graduates with Herff Jones.  Herff Jones will start taking orders on Wednesday November 1st.

We are proud of Volleyball, Girls Soccer, and Boys Soccer.  Each had a great season and we look forward to next fall. We are proud of Boys Soccer for winning State Boys 5A Soccer Academic Champions! This week district swimming, state football and state cross country begin. Good luck to these programs!

We are so proud of our clubs giving back to the community. Business Professionals of America have been doing a coat drive, collecting coats to donate. Our Human Rights Club recently raised money through a penny war for a school hit by the recent hurricane in Houston,TX. Our Key Club also did a penny war raising money for UNICEF which goes to children's health initiatives. The next couple of weeks our Junior Civitan will be participating in the Stone Soup Event at ISU's Ballroom.  Also, they are again leading the Food Drive Competition with the help of the Army. The food goes to fill the high schools food pantry and then to help local charities. The food drive competition will go throughout this week.  We thank all who are willing and able to donate non perishable food items throughout this week to this worthy cause.


Also, student government has been busy setting up Nice Week this week. Each day, during 1st period, students receive a message and a challenge, put together by student government. The hope is to increase kindness and niceness across the school. We appreciate student government leading this charge as it is an important part of school climate and culture.

We are proud of our students for reaching out and looking beyond themselves. Something we feel is a very important piece of our educational mission and vision at Highland High School.

Preference changes will be done ONLY during following dates and times.

Please note we will only be doing changes for 2nd trimester to help as many students as possible during their personal time.  It is likely students may have to wait in line more than once if the bells ring for class.  Please be patient. This is frustrating for everyone.  Rudeness to counselors will result in a refusal to do a schedule change for that student. 

Students with “see counselors” in their schedule will be pulled by counselors to fill those spots.  There is no need for those students to wait in line.
