IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Congratulations to our Highest Honors (4.0 + at least 2 AP Classes), High Honors (4.0-3.8), and Honors Students (3.79-3.6) this year at Highland High School. We have 72 students graduating with Highest Honors, 38 students graduating with High Honors, and 15 graduating with Honors. We are so proud of these students!
Reminder that our Highest Honors students received their medals today, 4/29/19, during a luncheon provided by Highland Administration. Tonight, our Highest Honors students and their parents/guardians are invited to be recognized at a district wide reception at 6:30pm at Century High School. Refreshments will be served. Dress is semi-formal. Highest Honors students should wear their medals to the reception tonight and they should wear them with their cap and gown at graduation. Again, we are extremely proud of these students and want to recognize them for their hard work and scholarly achievements.

Because we are at the end of the school year and do not expect students and teachers to come back and make up finals over the summer, students who have extenuating circumstances can take their finals early on a very limited basis. For a student to be cleared to take finals early they must complete the following form and provide evidence that they cannot be here during the final. Forms will be available in the main office and counseling office.

Starting in the 2019-2020 school year, in order to be in compliance with Idaho education law, the Pocatello/Chubbuck School district will be changing the way they issue credit for dual enrollment courses. Dual enrollment courses are courses in which a student can earn college credit while still in high school. In the past, each dual enrollment course taken would account for one high school credit, regardless of the corresponding credit level at the institution of higher learning. For example, a student taking English 101, a three (3) credit course at ISU, would receive one (1) high school credit on their high school transcript.. However, the law now requires that students receive high school credit at a ratio of at least 2:1 for dual enrollment courses. As such, the same English 101 course will now equate to one and a half (1.5) high school credits on the high school transcript. Likewise, if a student takes a dual enrollment course with a college credit value of four (4) credits, the student will receive two (2) high school credits. Dear Senior Parents, If you have students who are planning on going to Idaho State University fall 2019, make sure your student has accepted their scholarship offers. This can be done by completing the paperwork that should have been sent to the student’s residence. This is crucial because the deadline for accepting is May 1st. After this deadline the scholarship offer is gone! If you need the paperwork sent to you again you can contact the Scholarship Office at (208) 282-3315 to have them re-send the scholarship offer. Advaced
placement exams start next week
AP students that are testing, have received the dates, times
and location of the exams. Please speak to your student about the green paper provided
with this information as well as encourage your student to make sure they are
ontime for the exam so he/she does not miss out on the oportunity to
participate in taking it. Per
CollegeBoard, all schools have to start the exam at a specifide time.
Summer School Information
If
students fail core classes during the year, they need to make them up in summer
school in order to stay on track for graduation.
Counselors recently received the summer school
information and want families to have as much time as possible to plan for
their student to attend if needed. We have been signing students up for needed
courses and contacting parents via phone call, email or mailed letter. We will continue this process this week April
29- May 3.

If you plan to take classes next year for dual
credit through Idaho State University, please be sure you have completed and
submitted your Early College Program (ECP) application. Step-by- step
directions are available at the Early College website. Go to this URL:

Students who plan to take a math or science
class for dual credit need to take a standardized math assessment, the ALEKS
test, in order to register for some dual enrollment classes (the ALEKS test is
not needed for English, history, or social science classes). We are offering
the ALEKS test after school on Monday, May 6th, and Monday, May 20th.
We will be meeting in the library immediately after school, about 2:45 p.m.
Before students sit for the ALEKS test, students have to of completed their
Early College application prior to ALEKS testing. We hope they will have slept
well the night before, eat a good lunch so their stomachs are not growling, and
do some preparation by reviewing math material and learning strategies for
taking online math assessments. Your help and cooperation will be greatly
appreciated as we have hundreds of students who need ALEKS testing before they
can earn dual enrollment.

May 1st (THIS Wednesday, May 1st)
is the deadline by which Idaho State needs its incoming new students to accept
the scholarships awards given to new students. If your student
will be attending ISU, have him or her log on to BengalWeb, click on Student
Finances, look for the My Financial Aid box, and then click on the Accept
Financial Aid Awards hyperlink. Review, approve, and accept from there – by
this Wednesday, May 1st. Any questions, call ISU’s Scholarship

A number of students indicated interest in
taking on-campus ISU classes this summer or fall 2019. There is
special paperwork for on-campus classes. The summer session for Early College
begins June 10th and the on-campus fall semester begins August 19th.
All the pieces and paperwork & advanced opportunity funding needs to be in
place by mid-May for students to take on-campus classes summer or fall.
Through these and other efforts, we are trying to avoid
classroom disruption and have a seamless start of school in August. Your help
will be appreciated by everyone – your students, teachers, and staff here and
at ISU, and all those who support students and educators.

Summer School dates are set. First Session: June 11-July 3. Second Session: July 8-July 30. All students who need to make up credits will need to register with their school counselor before the end of the school year (May 31st). Summer school will be held at the New Horizon Center.
Reminder that the Idaho Legislature recently passed a bill allowing for a STEM designation to be included on a student’s high school diploma.

Students who successfully complete all graduation requirements established by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District may receive a high school diploma designated as a STEM diploma if they meet the following criteria:
· Complete eight (8) credits in mathematics
· Complete eight (8) credits in science
· Complete five (5) additional credits of the student’s choice in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.
Students who are interested in applying for the STEM diploma designation can see their counselor for
an application. Applications must be completed and returned to the school registrar prior to May 1, 2019.

The Highland Foundation is dedicated to raising money to benefit Highland High School. For example, last school year the Highland Foundation was able to remodel the school library from funds that were donated through the foundation, bringing it up to date and making it a powerful resource for the school. There are some benefits you can recieve from donating money to the Highland Foundation. One benefit is that you are helping improve Highland High school. Also, there are a couple of tax benefits. Your donation(s) can be written off as an itemized deduction on your Federal Taxes. In addition, there is a specialized tax rebate that can be applied to State Taxes for donations to a non-profit/public school entity allowing for up to 1/2 back.
The foundation has been working to find ways that make it easier for you to give to Highland High School. The first step in this process is establishing a Venmo account. Venmo is an app that can be downloaded to your phone and facilitates the transfer of money from one to another. Once set up, it literally takes just seconds. The Highland Foundation bank account is attached to its newly established Venmo account allowing for donations to go directly to the account. The account handle name is @HighlandFoundation, you will see Melissa Nielsen's name (the school librarian) as she is the treasurer for the Highland Foundation. You can donate up to $2,999 in one transaction. Please type in where you want this money to be donated (English, Math, Wrestling, Football, Library, Etc). If you do not specify where then it will automatically be assigned to the general account and will not be earmarked for a specific area.
