Congratulations to Highland teacher and coach Mr. Dane Beorchia for being recognized by the Milken Family Foundation for one of the most prestigious national awards a teacher can receive as an outstanding educator. This award was given to Coach Beorchia on Friday 3/18/22 in a special assembly. State Superintendent Sherri Ybarra and other state, local, and school district officials were in attendance. We are so proud of Coach Beorchia and we are grateful for his recognition by the Milken Family Foundation.

MAKE-A-WISH and State Debate

Every year Highland sponsors a  person through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Tomorrow, Tuesday 3/29/22, we kick off our efforts to raise money with an assembly. Also, in this assembly we will be recognizing our Highland Debate Team and their recent State Championship win.

 Below are the events student government has lined out for Make-A-Wish. For anyone wanting to donate and help Highland sponsor a person through Make-A-Wish, please contact the school.

• A big part of Make-A-Wish is the Highland Idol competition. Patterned after American Idol, Highland students try out and compete in front of judges and are then showcased in the final Make-A-Wish Assembly. 
• Mon 3/28-Wed 3/31 Highland Idol sign-ups in Room E56.
• Make-A-Wish T-shirts $13, Wristbands $2, and Sticker $2, or all 3 for $15.
• Sat 4/2 at 10am Color Run at Highland High School. Cost is $10 per person or $15 with a T-shirt.
• Mon 4/4 6pm Bingo Night in the Highland Cafeteria $2 per card.
• Tue 4/5 Ram Family Feud $5 entry fee in Auditorium.
• Wed 4/6 7pm Championship Coed Volleyball Game followed by Dance $5 entry fee.
• Thur 4/7 7pm Highland Idol Semifinals in the Highland Main Gym.
• Tue 4/12 Final Make-A-Wish Assembly and Highland Idol Finals.

Other Important Dates Coming Up

On Wednesday 3/30/22, Juniors will be taking the Science ISAT.

On Friday 4/8/22, Highland is hosting the State Speech Competition. In order to accommodate the large number of tournament participants expected, Highland High School students (not participating in the tournament) will be excused from in-person class time at lunch. Students will be expected to complete work online for the duration of the school day. Any (non-tournament) students remaining on campus after 1:00 p.m. will be directed to a classroom to complete their online work to finish out their day. Busing home will be provided at the regular pick-up time for those students who do not have other transportation options.

On Wednesday 4/13/22 Juniors will be taking the SAT and Sophomore's will be taking the ISAT's. Freshman and Seniors will not be in school that day.

Spring Break starts next week. Students will not have school from 3/21-3/25/22. Students will be back in school on Monday 3/28/22.

Congratulations to Highland Debate, STATE CHAMPIONS!!!

This is the first time in 47 years that Highland has won State Debate (since 1975, the first year they combined the "Girls" and "Open" divisions at State Debate) and only the 4th time in our schools history (1972, 1974, 1975) Highland has ever won State Debate. Higher Education Day,

Dear Highland Junior Students, Families of Junior Students, & Highland colleagues,

For the first time since the spring of 2019, we will be offering Higher Ed Day (really Higher Ed morning), for our junior students at Highland on Wednesday, March 16th, from 9 to 11 am. Juniors will report to their first-hour class, and when it is announced on the intercom at about 8:50, they will go to the first of three sessions of their choosing. Presentations will be made in locations throughout school (if possible, we’d like presenters to have access to technology and projection) and we are grateful to teachers and staff for allowing us to use their spaces. The schedule is below, as is a list of our presenters. 

This is such a good opportunity for our junior students, and we understand and appreciate that it will be disruptive to those who teach juniors and to the rest of the staff who are trying to teach during the 1st and 2nd hours that day. You might want to keep your classroom doors closed on Wednesday morning because the kiddos will be in the halls – no doubt discussing their futures and college plans. Students will stay in their third session until the bell for the start of the third hour, at 11:07. We are sure that as students pass in the hall, they will be considerate of their teachers and classmates by their respectful behavior. And we don’t want students wandering the halls after their third session; we’ll do our best to keep noise and disruption to a minimum throughout the morning. 

All juniors are expected to participate and attend (we’ll use QR codes in each room to know who was present and then Google will amalgamate names and attendance). We will post the schedule and the presenters on the Junior Google classroom, will send a brief reminder text to families, and will post the presenters and their locations throughout the school. We are very very grateful for your help and support in this endeavor. Below is the schedule and the list of presenters; we will finalize locations early next week. 

Wednesday, March 16, 2022 – Higher Ed Day

Presenters will arrive at 8:45 and go to the rooms they’ve been assigned to, and set up. 

Schedule – first & second instructional hours; three sessions, each ~ 35 minutes long.

Juniors report to first hour classes, and are dismissed to go to Session 1 between 8:50 - 9 am

Session 1 – 9 to 9:35 am (35 minutes)

5 minutes to pass to Session 2 

Session 2 – 9:40 - 10:15 am (35 minutes)

5 minutes to pass to Session 3 

Session 3 – 10: 20 - 11 am (40 or so minutes)

Session 3 is 40 minutes long; students STAY in place until the bell rings at 11:07 am.

Idaho National Laboratory’s K-12 STEM program is hosting its March virtual job shadow for students in grades 9-12. This month's focus will be on exploring exciting careers and education pathway opportunities in Safeguards and Security. During the seminar, students will hear from recruiters about work-place learning programs. Throughout the event they will learn how employees used their education to gain employment at INL and how they contribute to INL's mission. Space is limited, so please register today.

Dear Highland Parent, Student, and Ram Supporter,

Trimester 3 is underway. We are excited! If you are still working through class schedule issues, please contact your students counselor. Preferential schedule changes are now complete. We look forward to finishing the year strong with a great Trimester 3.

Parents: Please log into Infinite Campus to see your Highland High School student's trimester 2 grades and any outstanding fees. Report cards will not be mailed home however, if you require a hard copy you can print a copy from the documents tab on the home page of Infinite Campus. All fee payments should be made directly to the Bursar.

Congratulations to our 43 seniors who graduated early at the end of second trimester. They completed all graduation requirements set by SD#25, with help and planning from their counselors. Many graduated with both STEM designations and honors. We are proud to have them represent our Ram Family.

Reminder that this coming Sunday 3/13 is Daylight Savings. Set your clocks ahead an hour on Saturday night 3/12. Also, reminder Spring Break is the week of March 21-March 25. Back in school on Monday, March 28.

Blood Drive March 8th in Lower Gym

Right now the American Red Cross is facing a national blood crisis - the worst blood shortage in more than a decade. Tomorrow there will be a blood drive at Highland put on by the Key Club. If you are 16 or older and want to help, please sign up today to donate blood in Room B67. We have about 40 open spots to fill.

Highland Drama proudly presents Shrek the Musical! Performances will be at 7pm starting March 3rd-March 8th. With a matinee at 1pm on Saturday March 6th and no performances on Sunday March 7th. Highland Band Fundraiser

Highland Band is putting on their annual "Potato Feed" fundraiser on Monday 3/14 from 6-9pm. Cost is $5 per person and $20 per family. There will also be a silent auction and a raffle.

HHS has 94 students set to graduate with a STEM designated diploma this year.  The deadline for the STEM Scholarship is nearing a close please see the Registrar, Counselor, or a CCA for the application if you are interested in applying or to find out if you qualify.

College and Career Advisors

Dear Highland Students & Families,

Welcome to a new tri-mester and the last tri of the school year. Time is flying. Some important information below for our juniors and seniors.

J U N I O R S

Ø  Higher Ed Day will be next Wednesday morning, March 16^th, here at Highland. This is something we have not been able to offer our juniors since the spring of 2019 – three years! Nine colleges and universities will be present, along with a representative from the military, and financial aid and scholarship professionals (because it is never too soon to be thinking about how to pay for college and training). There will be something for everyone. Each student will choose three presentations over the course of the morning, and then will report to his or her third-hour class. Attendance will be taken and all juniors are expected to attend. This is an opportunity for students to get thinking about life and work after high school – it comes around quick.

Ø  Advanced Opportunities money will reimburse students who register and pay for an ACT or ACT with Writing test this summer. All juniors will take the SATs in April. Students can then see how they do and prepare and prep to take the ACT this summer when there aren’t other academic items competing for their attention. Just visit the college career advisors and they’ll ask you to forward your confirmation email for reimbursement.

S E N I OR S

Ø  Do you plan to attend ISU’s College of Technology next year? You HAVE to call Students Services at the College of Technology (208-282-2622) to schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor in your program in the next few weeks. It is THIS appointment that saves your seat, otherwise there may not be room in the cohort for you.

Ø  Bengal Bridge. Are you headed to college or training in the fall? Consider enrolling in Bengal Bridge at ISU this summer. It is a compressed semester in 7 weeks, students can take up 9 or 10 credits at a great price, live on or off campus, and make a soft landing to the college experience. The course offerings are introductory-level classes that should transfer to any college or training program, and will help you make a smooth transition to college whether you plan to attend a 4-year college or 2-year career/technical program. Ask the college career advisors for more information. 

Ø  Construction Combine. March 30^th and 31^st at the Home Depot parking lot. Students must be 17 and must complete an application at -- https://constructioncombine.org/locations/pocatello/apply/ -- to participate. There are only six slots available for each Pocatello high school, and the deadline to apply is March 15^th. We particularly want to encourage female students to apply.

Ø  If you applied to the Idaho Opportunity Scholarship, BE WATCHING your email in mid- to late April to see if you have been chosen for this scholarship. If so, you need to respond promptly to accept; if they don’t hear from you, you move to the second round and may miss out. Anyone who has applied to ANY scholarship needs to be watching email from now until the summer. 

Ø  Have you checked out the listing of Idaho scholarship on the Next Steps website? Some deadlines are already passed, but there are others that have deadlines in the spring or early summer. Follow this link to review the list and apply to the ones appropriate for you, your college / training program, your goals and plans.
