==============================
Dear Highland Parent, Student, and Ram Supporter,

We had a very exciting first week of school. It is so fun to have all our Highland students back! Reminder that we will not have school on Monday 9/6/21 because of Labor Day.

Students who have math and/or science dual enrollment classes the 1st trimester must take the ALEKS test if they haven't already to be eligible for the dual enrollment credit. The last 2 dates to take the ALEKS test for 1st trimester are today, Monday 8/30 and Monday 9/13. Please contact the College and Career Advisors for any questions.

Auditions start today, Monday 8/30, for Highland's fall drama production of the Harry Potter spin off called Puffs. For any student interested in auditioning, come to the auditorium after school today, Monday 8/30. You will do a cold read, so you will not need to prepare anything. Contact Director Van Noy with questions or concerns. vannoal@sd25.us

In this letter we will review our vision and mission at Highland along with our attendance procedures. We have a school leadership team, a parent advisory group, and a student advisory group that all are tasked with providing feedback and joining in the work with helping Highland continually improve. The agenda and minutes from the meetings of each of these groups will be provided as a part of this newsletter in a link on the right hand side. We believe that working together we can improve.

With any questions or concerns, please give us a call or send us an email and we will respond as promptly as possible.

Vision: Highland High School offers a safe and comprehensive learning experience focused on preparing all students to achieve success and happiness in college, career, and in life.

Mission: Highland High School believes deeply that in learning and in life=Right Attitude Means Success.

The “Right Attitude” we strive to learn and live as RAMS includes being….

Respectful and caring towards ourselves and others;

  • Safe and trusting environment.

  • Healthy and appropriate relationships.

  • Use restorative practices to correct mistakes.

  • Selflessness and responsibility.

  • Plan for prevention.

  • The R Factor (Event+Response=Outcome)

  • Making ourselves and others better.

Accountable and prepared for each class and event;

  • Establish a vision/goal.

  • Understand and consistently revisit the why.

  • Learn what it will take to accomplish the vision/goal.

  • Engage in the grind.

  • Seek and provide support and feedback.

  • Identify the gap between where we are now, where we want to be and relentlessly work to improve.

  • Ownership.

Motivated and focused in academics, activities and athletics;

  • Build efficacy and confidence.

  • Find, learn from, and share inspiring examples.

  • Improve self for challenges and to be a helpful resource for others.

  • Collaborate to overcome barriers.

  • Take time to celebrate and learn from failures and improvements.

  • Adversity as fuel, Fortitude, the Growth Mindset, and Grit.

Scholarly and spirited in school and in life.

  • Continually improve.

  • Represent ourselves, our family, our school, and our community with excellence.

  • Organized, strategic, hardworking, patient and optimistic.

  • Self-driven learner.

  • Help others in their journey.

We will strive to instill these RAM Attitudes into our students here at Highland. The bulk of TA/Homeroom time will be spent on this goal.

Here is our data that we use to set our school wide goals for the coming school year and to monitor our progress.

Here is the agenda/minutes from our Highland Leadership Team to start off the school year.

                                   -------------------------------------------------------------------

ATTENDANCE-TRUANCY PROCEDURES
Here is a review of our attendance procedures at Highland High School.

In short it states that a student will begin to receive truancies at 6 unexcused absences. The only absences that are excused include medical, legal, and school activities. Medical and legal absences require documentation in order to be considered excused. School administration can also excuse absences when determined necessary.

After a student receives 1 truancy, the next unexcused absence can result in another truancy. The 1st truancy is a warning. The 2nd truancy will result in an assignment of Friday Night School for students 15 and younger and community service and a meeting with school administration for students 16 and older. At 3 truancies a student and parent/guardian must make an appeal to school administration. If the student is 15 or younger and the appeal is denied, or the student continues to be absent after the appeal, the student will receive a 4th truancy and be referred to the School Resource Officer for a citation for habitual truancy. If the student is 16 years or older, they will lose credit and be unenrolled from the class or classes in which they have 8 or more unexcused absences.

Please contact school administration with questions or concerns.

Parent Advisory Team:
Last call to be a part of the Highland Parent Advisory Team. Every year we have a group of parents participant in our Highland Parent Advisory Team. This group is an active part of improvement at Highland High School. They have been instrumental in our efforts towards addressing several issues at Highland. We invite anyone interested to fill out the form. We meet once every other month for lunch, provided by School Administration. Please email Principal Wallace with any questions. Our first meeting will be in September.

                        ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are excited to take on the school year with you. As the Highland Ram Family there are not any challenges too big if we work together towards overcoming them. Thank you for all you do and for your amazing students you share with us. They fill our lives and we love them.

GO HIGHLAND RAMS!

COVID Update:
The School Board has decided to prioritize in-person learning, five days a week, for the 2021-2022 school year. The Board also took action to recommend masks/face coverings, but left the decision optional and up to the discretion of families. School assemblies, dances, and other activities will all be a part of the planned activities for the 2021-22 school year at Highland unless there is a change in direction.

Parent Advisory Team:
Every year we have a group of parents participant in our Highland Parent Advisory Team. This group is an active part of improvement at Highland High School. They have been instrumental in our efforts towards addressing several issues at Highland. We invite anyone interested to fill out the form. We meet once every other month for lunch, provided by School Administration. Please email Principal Wallace with any questions. Our first meeting will be in September.

Extracurriculars:
All indoor activities hosted on Idaho State University campus do require masks in order to attend. This Saturday our JV and Varsity Football teams play in the Holt Arena at 3:30pm and 6:30pm verses Rocky Mountain High School. Masks are required. Those who do not wear a mask will not be allowed to attend. If someone removes their mask while at the game, they will be approached by security and asked to leave. We ask that everyone respect and follow the guidelines set by Idaho State University to keep students at ISU and those in our community safe. Please contact Athletic Director Travis Bell with any questions or concerns.

Again, we are so excited to have students back. This is going to be a great year! GO RAMS!
