We are so proud of all our spring athletes. They had amazing seasons! In golf Payton Fehringer won her 3rd individual state championship and Lexi Rowe finished 9th! Our girls golf team finished 3rd at state and boys ended 8th! In Tennis, Chloe Stoddard finished 5th while mixed doubles team Sabrina Wathne and Carter Fellows finished 3rd! Baseball and softball both went two and out, but played well, both losing to the teams that eventually won the state title. Track & Field ended with 9 placing in the top 10 in their events. Reminder to all graduates and parents of the expectations for etiquette for the graduation ceremony.  Failure to adhere to the expectations will result in being removed from the ceremony.  We ask for your help in respecting the culture of the graduation ceremony and making sure it is a positive and inspiring event for all of us.  

• Students will not be able to alter their cap or gown in any way. 
•  Noise makers and/or objects like balloons, frisbees, laser pointers, blow horns, beach balls, or anything distracting from the ceremony are not allowed.  
• Students should be properly clothed under their robes. 
• Anyone attending the ceremony needs to be aware that bags will be searched upon entrance to graduation and outside food, drink, and the prohibited items listed above will not be allowed. 

We are excited to celebrate this momentous occasion with our students and their families.

We wanted to take time and recognize Highland Junior Sylvia Shutes, who was awarded the Project SEED grant to do chemistry research this summer at ISU. We are so proud of Sylvia and her accomplishments! She is an example of someone who lives the RAM Attitudes every day. Congratulations Sylvia.

Also, we wanted to take time to recognize Highland Teacher of the Year, Austin Thompson! We are so proud of Mr. Thompson. He is an influential educator who is an asset to his students, our school and our community. Congratulations Mr. Thompson!

Come enjoy our last play of the school year as Highland Drama performs the final showing of Shakespeare's Comedy of Horrors tonight at 7:30pm in the Highland Auditorium ($3 Students, 5$ Adults).

Also, Choir will hold its final concert of the school year on Tuesday 5/15 at 7pm in the Highland Auditorium, and Band will be holding their final concert of the school year on Thursday 5/17/18 at 7pm in the Highland's Main Gym.

All of these students have worked so hard and we are so proud of the progress they have made this school year.

Our Highland Rams did amazing at district competition qualifying us in every activity for 5A state competition. Boys and Girls Golf is already competing in Lewiston, ID.  Baseball, Tennis and Track & Field will be in Boise, ID at various locations starting Thursday 5/17/18. The State softball tournament will be held here starting Friday 5/18/18, in Chubbuck, ID at Capell Park. Safe Schools Pilot:

Beginning Monday, May 14 through the duration of the school year, Highland High School has volunteered to begin piloting a new safety protocol: Safe Schools: All Day, Every Day.

The purpose of the pilot is to test the new safety protocol and provide our schools the opportunity to identify the successes and challenges they may face throughout the day. Once we evaluate the data collected during the pilot phase, we will be better positioned to adopt this new safety protocol district-wide. 

During the pilot program, you can expect to encounter the following when

visiting Highland High School:

• All exterior doors will remain locked during school hours, including the front doors.
• Access to the school will be granted by appointment or in cases of emergency.
• To check out a student a parent/guardian must call the school, who will verify the check out, and then the student may leave the school.
• Students who check in, must call the school to be allowed access to enter, and when granted access to the school, must check in at the attendance office.
• If a parent/guardian wants to drop off an item a student forgot, the student will need to check-out and leave the school to get the item, and then check back in.
• There will be a sign placed at the front entrance with instructions for gaining 
• entry. You will be required to use your mobile phone to call the number listed to request entry.
• All visitors must be prepared to present valid I.D.
• A member of the school’s staff will assist each visitor as soon as possible. 
• Please be patient while you wait. Keep in mind that our staff may be assisting others inside the school, including tending to students in need, which is our first priority.
• The building will be accessible for end of the year events that parents/guardians may want to attend.

During the pilot program, all other secondary schools besides Highland High School and the New Horizon Center will operate as usual.

News and information from the Counselors 

Counselors have been working with seniors finalizing graduation requirements as well as answering questions about life after high school whether it be military, work, scholarships or college. 

 We have also been signing students up for our school district’s summer school for classes that need to be retaken. If you believe your child needs to attend and have not heard from one of us, please call the appropriate counselor.

AP testing started today and will run over the next two weeks. Mrs. Baker is in charge of all of the tests so please be patient about her response time to you.

Lastly, we are helping students that have questions about their classes for next year correcting their registration materials and will start checking all current junior’s classes and transcripts to insure they are on track to graduate. We will make needed changes to their registration/class choices.  Along with that we are asking all current juniors that want to graduate early to speak to their assigned counselor as soon as possible so we can insure they are on track and can be scheduled in the classes needed to graduate early. All sophomores that want to graduate at the end of their junior year will need to do the same.

Warning Signs a Child is being Cyberbullied or is Cyberbullying Others

Many of the warning signs that cyberbullying is occurring happen around a child’s use of their device. Some of the warning signs that a child may be involved in cyberbullying are:

◊  Noticeable increases or decreases in device use, including texting.

◊   A child exhibits emotional responses (laughter, anger, upset) to what is happening on their device.

◊   A child hides their screen or device when others are near, and avoids discussion about what they are doing on their device.

◊   Social media accounts are shut down or new ones appear.

◊   A child starts to avoid social situations, even those that were enjoyed in the past.

◊   A child becomes withdrawn or depressed, or loses interest in people and activities.

What to do When Cyberbulling Happens

If you notice warning signs that a child may be involved in cyberbullying, take steps to investigate that child’s digital behavior.  Cyberbullying is a form of bullying, and adults should take the same approach to address it: support the child being bullied, address the bullying behavior of the participant, and show children that cyberbullying is taken seriously. Because cyberbullying happens online, responding to it requires different approaches. If you thing that a child is involved in cyberbully8ing, here ae several things you can do:

Notice-Recognize if there has been a change in mood or behavior and explore what the cause might be. Ry to determine if these changes happen around a child’s use of their digital devices.

Talk-Ask questions to learn what is happening, hot it started, and who is involved.

Document-Keep a record of what is happening and where. Take screenshots of harmful posts or content if possible. Most laws and policies note that bully8ing is a repeated behavior, so records help to document it.

Report-Most social media platforms and schools have clear policies and reporting processes. If a classmate is cyberbullying, report it to the school. You can also contact app or social media platforms to report offensive content and have it removed. If a child has received physical threats, or if a potential crime or illegal behavior is occurring, report it to the police.

We wanted to take time and recognize Highland's Seniors Kai Sluder, Joshua Gardner, Joseph Thompson, and Junior Elijah Adling, who are the first students from Highland to participate in the American Chemical Society (ACS) Olympiad. The Olympiad consists of a series of rigorous Chemistry Exams in March and April at regional, national and then international levels. Senior Kai Sluder placed 3rd on the regional exam and qualified to take the national exam. He was the only student in our school district to place in the top 3. Seniors Joshua Gardner and Joseph Thompson also qualified to take the national exam. We are so proud of these students and their amazing accomplishments. On Monday 5/14/18, we will begin by piloting increased security of limited access at Highland High School. You will be getting two reminder notifications before Monday 5/14/18. 

All exterior doors of the school will be locked at all times. The school will only be accessible to those with an appointment or in case of emergency. Please call the school to set up an appointment or in the case of emergency. To check a student out, you will need to call the school and the attendance office will verify through our information on infinite campus who is checking the student out and then the school will send the student out. You will no longer need to come into the school. The same goes for checking a student in. Also, we will no longer allow the delivery of food, gifts, balloons, or other celebratory items.

We recognize that this will be a change for everyone and will take some time to adjust to.  The purpose is to keep our students as safe as possible. Highland and The New Horizon Center are the schools that will be piloting this increase in security at the secondary level.  A few elementary schools are already piloting increased security with limited access.

This week is teacher appreciation week. We love our teachers at Highland High School and appreciate the amazing work they do for the benefit of our students. Thank You Teachers!

Year books are on sale by the attendance office in between classes and at lunch for the remainder of the week for $70.

Students who participate in school activities and athletics must have a physical every 2 years. Typically this is done prior to a student coming in as a Freshman and then again as a Junior. Tonight, 5/7/18 from 5:30pm-7pm at Highland High School Cafeteria is free physical night for girls and tomorrow free physical night for boys 5/8/18 from 5:30pm-7pm. Without a physical students cannot participate in High School Activities/Athletics. A student can visit their physician to get a physical rather than attend the free physical nights.

This week and next week Advanced Placement testing is taking place. Please make sure these students are getting enough rest and a good breakfast. We wish them the best and we are proud of all their hard work this year.

District competition is underway this week. Baseball actually started last week and they have secured a spot to state next week. Wednesday 5/9/18 they will be playing @ Bonneville High School for the district championship at 3pm. Softball will be playing @ Bonneville as well for the district softball tournament on Tuesday 5/8/17 and Thursday 5/10/18. Tennis will compete in districts starting Wednesday 5/9/18 @ Capell Courts. Golf played in the district tournament today 5/7/18 in Idaho Falls. Girls won the district championship and boys took 2nd. News and information from the Counselors 

Counselors have been working with seniors finalizing graduation requirements as well as answering questions about life after high school whether it be military, work, scholarships or college. 

 We have also been signing students up for our school district’s summer school for classes that need to be retaken. If you believe your child needs to attend and have not heard from one of us, please call the appropriate counselor.

AP testing started today and will run over the next two weeks. Mrs. Baker is in charge of all of the tests so please be patient about her response time to you.

Lastly, we are helping students that have questions about their classes for next year correcting their registration materials and will start checking all current junior’s classes and transcripts to insure they are on track to graduate. We will make needed changes to their registration/class choices.  Along with that we are asking all current juniors that want to graduate early to speak to their assigned counselor as soon as possible so we can insure they are on track and can be scheduled in the classes needed to graduate early. All sophomores that want to graduate at the end of their junior year will need to do the same.

Warning Signs a Child is being Cyberbullied or is Cyberbullying Others

Many of the warning signs that cyberbullying is occurring happen around a child’s use of their device. Some of the warning signs that a child may be involved in cyberbullying are:

◊  Noticeable increases or decreases in device use, including texting.

◊   A child exhibits emotional responses (laughter, anger, upset) to what is happening on their device.

◊   A child hides their screen or device when others are near, and avoids discussion about what they are doing on their device.

◊   Social media accounts are shut down or new ones appear.

◊   A child starts to avoid social situations, even those that were enjoyed in the past.

◊   A child becomes withdrawn or depressed, or loses interest in people and activities.

What to do When Cyberbulling Happens

If you notice warning signs that a child may be involved in cyberbullying, take steps to investigate that child’s digital behavior.  Cyberbullying is a form of bullying, and adults should take the same approach to address it: support the child being bullied, address the bullying behavior of the participant, and show children that cyberbullying is taken seriously. Because cyberbullying happens online, responding to it requires different approaches. If you thing that a child is involved in cyberbully8ing, here ae several things you can do:

Notice-Recognize if there has been a change in mood or behavior and explore what the cause might be. Ry to determine if these changes happen around a child’s use of their digital devices.

Talk-Ask questions to learn what is happening, hot it started, and who is involved.

Document-Keep a record of what is happening and where. Take screenshots of harmful posts or content if possible. Most laws and policies note that bully8ing is a repeated behavior, so records help to document it.

Report-Most social media platforms and schools have clear policies and reporting processes. If a classmate is cyberbullying, report it to the school. You can also contact app or social media platforms to report offensive content and have it removed. If a child has received physical threats, or if a potential crime or illegal behavior is occurring, report it to the police.

Be sure and purchase your $2 Ticket or Tickets for the Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello Raffle benefiting Athletics and Activities.  Last year a Pocatello High School parent won a brand new Dodge Dart all expenses paid including taxes.  Over $56,000 was raised for school activities in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District in last years raffle.  Support athletics and activities again this year and buy raffle tickets for $2 for the chance to win a new Jeep Renegade worth $25,000 donated by Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can buy.  All expenses for the car are covered, including taxes.  All proceeds go to school athletics and activities.  Tickets are on sale until May 21, 2018 and the drawing will take place at the new Lithia Dealership in Pocatello on May 31, 2018.  Contact the school bursar to buy tickets (208)237-1300 and/or look to buy tickets and see the car on display at home events throughout the school year.
