Dear Highland Students & Families,
Last week’s blog post was waaaaay long, so this one will emphasize some upcoming
gems, and then I’ll go back to TMI in the weeks ahead.
All Students
District-Wide Job Fair – Thurs., April 27
Pocatello / Chubbuck School District 25 is having a district-wide Job Fair, at Century
High School, on Thursday, April 27 th , from 6 to 8 pm. Students may tour among the
array of employers who will be present to apply for summer jobs (and beyond). Students
should have a photo ID with them, know their Social Security number, have a brag
sheet or resume, and know of at least two people (not relatives) and their contact
information as references.
ALEKS Test: Monday, May 1 st
If you plan to take dual credit math or science during the 23 – 24 school year, you will
probably need an ALEKS score as a pre-requisite. Honors College Algebra, Statistics,
Honors Chemistry, AP Biology, Calculus, and Trigonometry all require an ALEKS score
or pre-requisite dual credit coursework.
We will be offering the ALEKS on Monday, May 1 st , after school, 3 pm, in the Library /
Media Center. We need students to sign up in advance so we know how many students
to expect. Please stop by the CCAs in C-36 to sign up to take ALEKS on May 1 st . The
time to take ALEKS is in the spring. Learning loss over the summer, and disappointing
ALEKS scores, can prevent some students from earning dual credit.
Seniors
College of Technology Next Year – Make Your Advising
Appointment !
If you are a graduating senior and plan on attending ISU’s College of Technology for
any of their degree or certificate programs, please be SURE to call the number below to
schedule your advising appointment in the next couple of weeks. The College of
Technology runs on a cohort system, which means that small groups are enrolled for
each program at the start of each semester. Each program has a limited number of
seats and without an advising appointment, your place is not assured. Tuesday, April
25 th (next week) would be the perfect time because the juniors are taking their I-SATs
and instruction for all other students is online that day.

Your Scholarships: How Many & How Much
Throughout Tri 3, and before you can pick up your graduation cap and gown / regalia,
we would like you to share with the CCAs where you were awarded scholarships (all
the schools and programs), from ANY source (institutions, the state of Idaho, other
outside funders), and the amount of each scholarship. This includes the Idaho
Opportunity Scholarship. We’re keeping a spreadsheet.
The data that is collected – which reflects only institutions and other scholarship fund
totals at each institution, and NO personal data – is shared with both school district
administration and the State Board of Education. That data serves to support the
presence of CCAs in our schools.
Get us your scholarship information in any form that is easy for you (an email, a note, a
scribble on a paper napkin) and we’ll enter it into our spreadsheet.
This is a good exercise for seniors because listing the scholarships you earned is
absolutely a resume item and an endorsement of your high school efforts, academic
and otherwise.
Senior Celebration, May 19 th
Mark your calendars!
On Friday, May 19 th , Highland will celebrate all its seniors with what we call Senior
Celebration, here at school. Seniors may wear their caps and gowns and adorn
themselves with cultural and personal identifiers (which is not endorsed for graduation
day). And students may sit with their friends (which cannot happen on graduation day).
Afterward there will be a reception with light refreshments and seniors can sign each
other’s yearbooks. It is a lovely send-off right before exams and actual graduation day.
Families, parents, and supporters are invited to attend and join in celebrating all our
seniors.
Decision Time: Intent to Enroll
If you plan to attend a college or training program in the fall, we want to recommend that
you let that school or program know your intention. Sometimes a simple email will
suffice, but most schools and programs want to get you on a roster and send you
important information. April and early May is when graduating seniors should make their
decisions and inform colleges and programs of your plans. No need to tell schools that
you won’t be attending, but it’s very important to tell schools that you WILL be attending.
New-Student Orientation
New, first-time, full-time students to college or training programs will be asked to attend
a new-student orientation. Look for messages / emails / texts that tell you about
orientation dates and expectations. Each college or program will have its own program
for new students to help them make a strong and smooth start. The link to Idaho State’s

Seniors, submit your FAFSA.
Work hard.
Do your best.
Make this school and the world better by your thoughts & actions.
