Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,

Parents & senior students are invited to the 'How To Pay For College' Night put on by the College and Career Advisors at HHS this evening (9/24/18) starting at 6:30pm in the Highland Media Center. We will focus on answering the question of 'how to pay for college' by having various representatives from Idaho State University speak about options for incoming college students. Departments include Financial Aid, Scholarship Office, College of Tech Recruiter, ISU Recruiter, Bengal Bridge Summer Program. This event will be held in the Highland High School Library at 6:30 pm. Pizza will be served!

Highland Dance and Track teams are proud to join together for the Ford Drive 4 UR School Fundraiser on Saturday, September 29th. This one day only event will be held in the Highland High School front parking lot from 9am to 5pm. This is a completely free, NO COST, NO PRESSURE, NO PURCHASE NECESSARY FUNDRAISER. In fact no salesmen will even be on site! So please invite your family, friends,  and neighbors to come and test drive a new Ford vehicle. For every test drive taken, Ford Motor Company along with Courtesy Ford Lincoln will donate a total of $20 to the Highland High Dance and Track teams, and you will be entered to win a Highland spirit gift basket! Test drives should only take 10-15 minutes of your time and with your help our teams can earn up to $6,000 from this special fundraising event. 

*Must be 18 years of age or older with a valid driver's license and valid automobile insurance. Donation of $20 per valid test drive, up to 300 total test-drives, for a maximum total donation of $6,000 per event. Limit one (1) donation per person.

In light of things going on in the world, School District 25 has opted to take a forward thinking approach to protect our students and staff members from sexual harassment. Several TAs throughout the year will focus on topics related to this subject in order to educate students regarding their rights and roles concerning this (where to report, how to handle the situation and get themselves in a safe environment if things are occurring etc.). We recognize that some of these issues may feel uncomfortable, because this is an uncomfortable subject. However, the district’s proactive stance is that we feel it necessary to help empower our students to move forward into creating and maintaining a safe learning environment for all students and staff members.

We know there’s still so much to do, but this is the year it all pays off. Stay focused on finalizing your personal list of colleges or training programs. Ask for letters of recommendation. Explore your financial aid options. And make sure to visit different schools to see which feel right for you. After you’ve applied, be sure to put in the time to tackle the FAFSA and any other financial aid you need. It’s time consuming, but totally worth it. Soon enough, you’ll have an exciting decision to make about what’s next.

If you’re a senior at an Idaho public high school, the State Board of Education is sending you a very important college acceptance letter.
In September, you and your parents will be receiving nearly identical letters that will tell you (and your parents) which Idaho colleges and/or universities have pre-accepted you based on your grades and SAT/ACT scores.

Meet our new College and Career advisor
Sarah May Clarkson started on Monday, September 17, as a college / career advisor. Born in Boston, she moved to Idaho from Pennsylvania three years ago. A life-long educator, she has also worked in book publishing, newspaper writing and editing, and hospital community relations. Before children, she travelled twice around the world on Semester at Sea with her husband, Kris, who works at ISU. They have two sons, Joe and Will, and a hugely spoiled dog, Edgar. Working with young adults is right in her wheelhouse she says . . . with a big smile.

    Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,

    This week we welcome our first home band competition, The Highland Band Invitational, at Ironhorse Stadium on Saturday 9/22/18 starting at 9am. We also welcome on Wednesday, 9/19/18, our first home swim meet at ISU's Reed's Gym Pool at 6pm. We are excited to see these two groups compete at home.

    We will be beginning our Parent Advisory Group meetings in October at Perkins on the corner of Olympus and Pocatello Creek Rd from 12pm-1pm. The purpose of the Parent Advisory Group will be to 1) open up avenues of communication between school and parents; 2) work together to help the school improve; and 3) deepen parent and school relationships.     Letters to were sent at the end of last week inviting juniors and sophomores with a GPA of 3.6 or higher to join National Honors Society (NHS). The letter includes the obligations and service requirements for NHS members. Any student that wishes to graduate with honors distinction needs to review the requirements in the student handbook (p. 31) and follow a course plan (pp. 34-36). Those that are interested in joining NHS need to fill out the application by Wednesday, September 26th.  If you haven’t received a letter by Thursday (9/20), please contact the NHS advisor, Stefanie Plato at platost@sd25.us.

    On Wednesday, 9/18/18,  we have our back to school night from 5:30pm -8pm. Connections Credit Union will be providing a pulled pork dinner. Please come and participate with us. Here is the schedule for the night=

    The Highland Intervention Team has met and revised their approach to Academic Intervention. Please review our procedures here and feel free to email Mr. Wallace wallacbr@sd25.us with any feedback you may have.

    HHS Academic Intervention

    The goal of Highland High School is to offer a safe and comprehensive learning experience focused on preparing all students to achieve success and happiness in college, career, and in life. School administration, teachers, and school counselors will work to provide supports to help students learn. Highland has the following process in place for identifying and intervening to support students who may struggle academically.

    Highland has an intervention team made up of teachers, administration, and counselors. They meet every 2 weeks.

    Highland’s Intervention Team identifies students who need support by reviewing the following information:
    • Teacher referral.
    • Student grades, credits, and progress towards graduation.
    • Student attendance.
    • Student behavior.

    From the information reviewed the Highland Intervention Team will identify students who need support and will provide interventions.

    The list of students with interventions will be shared with teachers and discussions on how best to help a student will take place. Also, parents of these students will be contacted.

    The interventions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Level 1: The students will be discussed in department meetings to collaborate an effort of support for the student.The teacher or teachers of the class or classes the student needs support in will make contact with the student to plan for additional support. The parent/guardian of the student will be notified of tutoring opportunities available at Highland High School.
    • Level 2: A school counselor or administrator will meet with a student to develop a contract with specific goals for academic improvement. The student will engage in specific lessons, assignments, or assessments targeting areas diagnosed as needing support as part of the contract. The students teacher(s) and the students parent/guardian will be contacted for input on the contract.
    • Level 3: The Highland Intervention Team will refer the student to school administration for assessment to access special education services, to attend a District Academic Progress Committee hearing, both, or some other form of intervention. The parent/guardian of the student will be involved in the process.

    The interventions that are decided upon are intended to be positive support for students and not a punitive consequence. They are designed to connect students to the resources around them and help them achieve their potential, closing gaps in their learning. Ultimately, the decision to access the resources and supports that will help students be successful is up to them. Failure to do so will be seen as insubordination to the schools efforts to help a student learn and progress.

    If the student does not access the resources and supports provided, and fails a class, the student may not have the opportunity to retake the class in their school schedule. The size of the student body and the pressures this places on school scheduling limits the ability to adjust schedules. As a result, these students may be required to make-up the class or classes they fail by attending summer school, through an online credit recovery course, through a correspondence course, or by some other means.  

    Tutoring is available at Highland High School at no cost to students from 4-5pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Transportation home from tutoring is not provided by the school. Please see exact tutoring times, dates, and locations on the school academic calendar at:
