Highland is proud to recognize Coach Christian Colonel, teacher and coach at Highland High School, for his nomination by the Idaho State Journal for the Business and Achievement Award. https://www.idahostatejournal.com/idahostatebanda/
Coach Colonel taught at Pocatello High School and coached JV baseball. He recently was hired as the head baseball coach at Highland in 2017 and then transferred to teach at Highland High School this school year. He has already had an amazing impact on students, staff, and the culture of Highland High School. We are proud of this nomination of Coach Christian Colonel. It is well deserved.
Highland is excited to have Russell Davies come and speak to our staff today, Monday 10/29/18. Russell Davies is a veteran from Pocatello that founded a nonprofit called Professional Transformation Sports Development (PTSD).
From his website we learn that the idea and mission of Professional Transformation Sports Development (PTSD) was conceived in 2012 by founder Russell Davies. Russell was recently relieved of military duty in 2011, and within a year, he had discovered kayaking to be a source of relief and rehabilitation in coping with post-military life. In establishing himself as a recognized athlete in the extreme kayaking community, he learned that outdoor sporting is as reliant on its community as it is on the activities themselves. Since coming to this realization, he's shaped his passion and focus around sharing the benefits of outdoor recreation with veterans of the U.S. Military also inflicted with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Depression. The Board of Directors for PTSD is comprised of colleagues sharing similar interests and passion in the benefits of therapeutic sporting.
After losing several close friends that had suffered from P.T.S.D. to suicide, Russell decided to make an effort to help the large community of veterans impacted by the condition. Seeing the benefits of outdoor recreation on P.T.S.D. first-hand, Russell wants to encourage veterans to work towards discovering hope and possibility in post-military life. The outdoor sporting community holds a unique fellowship, similar to that which is experienced while serving in the military. We are confident that by reaching out to veterans and showing them the possibilities of this lifestyle and community, we can make a tremendous impact on their lives.
His experience is linked with one of our book studies we are participating in at Highland this school year=No Barriers: A Blind Man's Journey to Kayak the Grand Canyon by Erik Weihenmayer. In fact, Russell has kayaked with some of those featured in the book we are reading.

We’re Heading West (Um, Northwest)—College & Career advisors
On Friday, November 9th, a veritable busload of students and staff are going to have a day of college visits, first to the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls in the morning, and then on to Boise State University in the afternoon and evening. We will tour both schools, meet with enrollment, and enjoy on-campus experiences, including a home football game at Boise State (woo hoo!). It will be a full day, up and back before the sun comes up on Saturday morning.
Thanks to all families who support Highland students. Remind them to use the resources and good people who stand ready to support students and families right here at school.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Tonight, 10/29/18, is the Junior Civitan service project fund raiser,
Stone Soup. We have 10 soup vendors plus salad, bread, brownies and
drinks. The cost of the single ticket is $6 before tonight or $7 at the
door. We also have $25 family passes for a group of up to 6 people. Dinner will be served
from 5 to 7 p.m. in the ISU Ponds Student Union ballroom. Come support
our Junior Civitan members.
Also, a big thanks to all who participated in the “
Socktober” sock drive. We have collected over 1700 pairs of socks.
So Awesome!
Junior Civitan is also leading a Food Drive from 10/29-11/9/18. Please donate nonperishable food items that will go to school pantries for students in need and to the other service organizations around Pocatello.
The fall musical, Urinetown, starts next week each night at 7pm in the Highland Auditorium Thursday 11/8-Saturday 11/10/18. This is a hilarious musical comedy.
Speech and Debate started their season off strong taking 2nd place overall at the Gate City Invite at Highland High School. This weekend they head to the Rocky Mountain Invite at Rocky Mountain High School in Boise, ID on Friday 11/2-Saturday 11/3/18.
Band took 2nd place in their category and won the outstanding music award at the Red Rock St. George, UT Competition. We are excited to hear from them this week as they perform at 7:30pm at Highland in the Main Gym on Thursday 11/1/19.
The PHC District 25 swim team did awesome at districts and competes at state this week on Friday 11/2-Saturday 11/3/18 at the West YMCA in Boise, ID.

Congrats to Highland Cross Country running at the state meet in Lewiston. All 3 of our runners set a personal record. Elena Sanford 19:58, Lauren Benson 20:11, and Jared Harden 16:27. Great season Cross Country!
Football plays Eagle this Friday in the state playoffs at 5:30pm in the Holt Arena. Go Rams!
