Dear Highland Parent, Student, and Ram Supporter,
Sophomore's are scheduled to take the PSAT exam on October 13th, 2021. Juniors who have signed up for the PSAT on this date have until September 13th to pay to take the exam or to seek reimbursement if they have changed their mind and already paid. The cost is $18 for Juniors. The state covers the cost for sophomore's. The test is scheduled for Wednesday, October 13th. Please contact Mrs. Santos-Smith in the counseling center with questions or concerns.

Back to School Night Wednesday 9/15/21 6pm-7:30pm
For all interested. Wednesday 9/15 evening is Back to School Night at Highland from 6pm-7:30pm. Parents can come spend time walking through their students daily schedule and meeting their teachers. Administration, college and career advisors, and counselors will also be available.

National Honors Society
Letters of invitation for National Honors Society (NHS) were
sent out last week to sophomores and juniors with a GPA of 3.6 or higher.
Students will need to fill out the application by Friday, Sept. 17
th
to be eligible for membership. Students who join NHS will have to select an
honors course plan. The plans can be found on pgs. 33-35 of the
handbook.

Black and Blue Bowl
This week is Black and Blue Bowl (Highland vs. Poky) Week. Reminder that at Friday's 9/17 game starting at 7pm, Highland fans will enter and sit on the southside of the Holt Arena because we are the visiting team.
Thursday 9/16 Highland Freshman play Pocatello High School at Iron Horse Stadium at 4:30pm and JV follows at 6:30pm. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for Seniors 55 and older, children 6-14 $4, and middle school students w/activity card $3. High School students with student ID are free.
Highland Boosters will be providing food at the Freshman and JV games on Thursday night.
$5 plates: hotdogs or pulled pork sandwiches, bag of chips and a soda.
Also, they will be doing a baked sale.
All proceeds go to the Highland football program.
Friday 9/17/21 we will have our Black and Blue Bowl Assembly.

- 9/20 Monday-Beach Theme (appropriate school attire-fully dressed) and Bingo Night 7:30pm in HHS Cafeteria cost is $3.
- 9/21 Tuesday-Cowboy Theme and Movie Night at Portneuf Wellness at dusk/dark (pending). Free Entrance.
- 9/22 Wednesday-Jersey Theme and Senior Sunrise 6:30am Iron Horse Stadium and Volleyball Game @ Highland 7:30pm free pizza for students.
- 9/23 Thursday-Prep School Theme and Ultimate Flag Football 7:30pm @ Iron Horse Stadium. Free Entrance.
- 9/24 Friday- Highland Spirit Theme and Assembly and School BBQ. Homecoming Game 7pm vs. Madison at Holt Arena.
- 9/25 Saturday-Semi-Formal, Highland Homecoming Dance. 8pm in HHS Cafeteria. $35 a couple.

College & Career Advisors
Dear Highland Students & Families,
This is -- incredibly -- the start of week 4 for
the 2021 - 2022 school year. Here is the latest from the college career
advisors:
- First, welcome to Carly Phillips, our new CCA. Carly
attended Northwest Nazarene University on athletic and academic
scholarships, and comes to Highland after working for two years in the
healthcare field. She brings all kinds of valuable experience to the job
and we are very glad to have her as part of our team.
What we offer:
Career. Your
college career advisors will be glad to assist any student who is looking
toward a job / career, who is job hunting, or who seeks guidance in identifying
personal strengths and work opportunities. Many of our students are both
attending school full time and working a job, and may see a future in that job.
Let us be helpful to you so your transition from high school to work is smooth
and successful.
- College. First, college can mean one
year, two years, or four years of school. We talk to students to find out
what amount of school will be right for them after they graduate, and give
them the information they need to know their best options. College is a
big commitment and we want students and families to be well prepared for
that next step.
- Training. Sometimes students head
toward training or apprenticeships after high school to learn a skill or
trade. We are fortunate to have ISU’s College of Technology in our
backyard and a few local apprenticeship programs. Ask us about formal
workforce training before jumping directly into a job (which will help you
with advancement and promotions).
- Military service. We are
fortunate to have military recruiters visit us at Highland regularly.
Military service is both a way to serve your state and country and earn
money that could be used for college or training. The Marines, the
National Guard, the Army, even the Coast Guard Academy have all been to
Highland in just the first month of school.
- Going on a Mission? We can and do support
students to make plans and preparation for college or training after they
return from their mission. It is important to make plans, applications,
and financial aid preparations before leaving on a mission
because both admission and scholarships can be deferred. A mission
provides valuable experience that will serve as the foundation for school
or career directly after it is completed.
- Planning to attend two or four years of college?
This is the sequence of events: 1) apply to college / training programs,
2) be accepted to college or training programs, and 3) then apply for
scholarships. In broad terms, we encourage students to make their
applications by December 1st (latest), get acceptances, and start applying
for scholarships immediately. We want students to use the period from
January 1st to March 1st to apply for scholarships like it’s their job --
which it is.
- Advanced Opportunities.
Each Idaho student has access to $4,125 in state funds that can be used
for exams (A.P., International Baccalaureate, professional certificates,
and capstone exams after training), dual-credit classes in everything from
Welding to Political Science. And more! These funds are a terrific gift to
students. Don’t leave that money on the table, so let us help you access
and utilize it!
- We encourage all students and families to check out
Idaho’s Next Steps website -- https://nextsteps.idaho.gov/
-- which is a rich resource of information related to personal and
academic interests, career pathways, training, and college. Lots of good
stuff there.
- Higher Education Booklets.
We have a pile of higher education booklets for Idaho institutions
offering training and college. First come, first served. Stop by and pick
one up.
We regularly post information and
updates to this family blog and the Google classroom. We can be hard to reach
by phone, so your best bet is to e-mail either of us. We want to be helpful and
supportive of all students, their families, and their plans for the future.
