Dear
Highland Students & Families,
February
will end tonight, then we’re into March, a new trimester, and for most of us,
it is hair-on-fire time. My friend Bill used to say that at the end of the school
year he didn’t have a syllabus, he had an exit strategy. Spot on.
We
live in deadline-driven work and academic worlds. Deadlines are more important
than ever now – for all students, but especially for our seniors. Here goes.
~
Because it is scholarship season, we want to remind everyone that a FAFSA has
to be completed in order for every student to be eligible for financial aid and
scholarships.
~
Many scholarships are hard upon their deadlines in the next few weeks. The
Idaho Opportunity Scholarship deadline is tomorrow, March 1st, and
many others will close before the month is over. Scholarship committees need to
meet, review, discuss, and decide so that students have a sense of their
finances before they commit to a school or college. As we have said before
about scholarships: apply, apply, apply.
~
Students who plan to attend Idaho State have a goldmine of scholarship
opportunities right on the Bengalweb, called the BOSS: the Bengal Online
Scholarship System. Haven’t logged on to it yet? Please do – lickety split. We
can help.
~
Highland High School FAFSA completion rate: 121 completed for a 35% completion
rate. This is good, but we can do better – particularly if we want our students
to earn scholarships. Please please please complete your FAFSAs.
~
Parents and guardians are advised to ask the Human Resources department of your
employer if they offer scholarships for the children of employees.
~
If your FAFSA has been submitted to your colleges, look on the Financial Aid
tab at each college to see what your award looks like. Accept any
scholarships that have been offered to you. In May you can decide where you
plan to attend and let that college know formally and properly.
~
We are going to start keeping a spreadsheet of every single scholarship offered
to our seniors, and we would ask students to stop by and let us know about all
the money they have been offered. Not that we’re in competition with other high
schools . . . but we are!
~
The Construction Combine is coming up, an opportunity for any student (men and
women), 17 years or older, to learn basic construction skills on March 30th
and 31st. Each school in SE Idaho may take six students, so spots
are limited. The Construction Combine is a great chance for students to decide
whether the construction trades are a good fit for them. There are flyers up in
school with a QR code that students can scan to take them to the application
website or students can apply by following this URL: https://constructioncombine.org/locations/pocatello/apply/
Here’s
to the third trimester, longer days, a bit of warmth, and wrapping up the 21 –
22 school year.
Stay
safe & well everyone,
Sarah
& Carly
