HHS March 27-April 3 Letter from Administration

Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,

Welcome back from Spring Break!  We are so proud of our Cheerleaders finishing 2nd in state overall and 1st in show, 2nd in sideline, 1st in POM, and 2nd in stunt.  We are also proud of our Dance Team having an amazing year and competing at state.  Debate also competed at state and took 4th overall.  Jett Smith and Riley May took 2nd in Policy Debate and Connor Coutts and Kaden Marchetti took 2nd in Public Forum.  All of our Highland students that participated in these events exemplified the growth mindset and the desire to improve next year.  They are amazing examples and we are proud of their efforts.

From now until the end of the school year things get pretty busy.  We have worked to put together an academic calendar to help parents and students stay informed of important events.  This academic calendar will be in our important links below and is also provided here:

Reminder to Graduates.  If you need to order or pay for your cap and gown please contact Herff Jones at 1-800-281-3305.  Last day to order is April 19, 2017.   Also, you will not be receiving your diploma if you have outstanding student fees.  Please get those fees paid.  Graduation will be here before you know it.

This is a community event for both parents and students to connect with possible technology based career paths and opportunities in our community.  Employers and educational/training opportunities from around the state will be presenting.  Nine careers will be highlighted where you can make approximately $32,000-$97,000 a year.  These careers include:

• Instrumentation/Controls Technicians
• Nuclear Operating Technology
• Electrical Engineering Technology
• Machining
• Maintenance Engineers/Mechanics
• Information Technology/Cyber Security
• Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drones)
• Diesel Mechanics  

Plan on attending.  There are several hands-on activities.  It is an amazing and fun family/community night where great connections to employers and programs can be explored.

You can still buy tickets up through Thursday 3/30/17: Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello Raffle for Athletics and Activities: Support high school athletics and activities and buy raffle tickets for $2 for the chance to win a new Dodge Dart worth $25,000 donated by Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can buy.  All expenses for the car are covered, including taxes.  

All proceeds go to high school athletics and activities at the high school you buy the tickets from.  Ticket sales are also used to help students pay for participation fees. Highland, Century, and Pocatello High Schools are participating.  The drawing will take place at the new Lithia Dealership in Pocatello on March 31, 2017 around 7:30pm. As always Highland students continue to accomplish amazing things.  Emma Carlsen was chosen for a National Scholarship and was also picked for an internship to travel to Morocco this summer by the National Security Language Initiative for Youth.  She will be studying Arabic! Thomas Maughan, another student from Highland, was chosen for an internship, for this spring 2017, with Myers Anderson Architects.  Thomas has been battling cancer and is an example of grit and optimism to us all.  Recently some ISU students were so inspired Thomas that they combined with Make-A-Wish Foundation to provide him with a wish.  If you would like to help raise money the ISU students set up a fundraiser on Thursday 4/6 from 5-9pm and Friday 4/7 7-11pm  at Deleta Skating Rink.  A portion of each person's entry fee on these nights will go to the Make-A-Wish foundation for Thomas Maughan.

HHS March 13th - March 20th Letter from Administration

On Monday, March 13, at 11:15 AM, we were able to participate in one of Highland's most special events: the Make-A-Wish/Highland Idol Finals assembly. This event is the culmination of Make-A-Wish Week, a series of events organized to help provide a wish for a special young lady named Kiara. Kiara has endured some obstacles in her life including battling leukemia, but has always faced them with a smile on her face. Accordingly, we in the Ram family, in our dedication to helping others and increasing the purposefulness of our own lives, are happy to help Kiara achieve her dream to visit a dude ranch by raising and donating $7000. At this amazing annual assembly, you can also see some very talented Rams compete for the title of Highland Idol. Thanks to all those who dedicated so much at each of the Make-A-Wish events.  Here is a picture of 4 year-old Kiara-front row, and student leadership along with their advisor Mrs. Mitton (far left).  You can watch the results of the Highland Idol competition and the highlights of the assembly on RAM TV's Youtube channel.  

  

Highland will be holding three incoming 9^th grade parent nights as a follow up to the academic planning that was done with your student in mid-February. Before the meeting, please have your student show you’re the progress they have already made and have a discussion about courses available by looking at the packet of information they previously brought home. Please complete the 9^th grade year and the rest of their four-year plan (as much as possible). Please pick one of the following nights to help plan your student’s four years at HHS:

Monday, March 13 – 3:30-5:00 PM

Tuesday, March 14 – 6:30-8:00 PM

Wednesday, March 15 – 6:30-8:00 PM

The goal is to have a complete four-year plan by the end of the parent night. Please bring your students 4-Year plan that was sent out in February.  If you don't have one, we will have one we can fill out together.

It is very important that incoming 9th grade parents are here on one of these nights.  You only need to attend one night, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

We look forward to seeing you and your students this week.

Teachers for current Freshman through Juniors have been meeting and creating plans for each of these students as well.  Your students have been instructed to bring these plans home and discuss them with their parents/guardians.  Those plans are due back Monday 3/13/17.  After school teachers will be entering these plans into Infinite Campus.  

The Special Olympics is a powerful program seeking to do good in our community. Highland has a desire to help raise money so that Special Olympics are supported. Mr. Noble and his Business Professionals of American Club, with support of the National Guard, are having a carnival at Highland High School on Thursday, March 16^th, from 6:30-9:30 PM. All proceeds of the event will be donated to the Special Olympics. Entry to the carnival is $5 and this includes ten tickets. More tickets are available in $5=10 tickets increments.  Come and enjoy a fun night at HHS raising money for a good cause in the community.

Mrs. Frasure and the Key Club are organizing a blood drive for Tuesday 3/14/17 at Highland High School to help the Red Cross provide for those in need.  This is for students 16 years of age and older. Sign-ups are taking place starting Monday 3/6-Monday 3/13.  Please see Mrs. Frasure in room B67 to sign-up.  Donating blood is a great way for students to be looking beyond themselves and living a selfless life. It is a way to literally save lives. It is also something that they could do every 8 weeks for the rest of their lives as long as they are healthy. If they overcome their fears and have a good experience when they donate with their friends here at Highland, then they will hopefully make it a life-long habit of service. The Red Cross is in a critical position right now. They are critically low on blood and it is not something they can buy at the store or order online. They need selfless people to voluntarily donate blood.  Students will need parent/guardian permission to donate.  We appreciate your support.  

Please do not forget that Spring Break will be held from March 20-24^th. Enjoy the time off!

Finally, for all sophomore parents, please be aware that Highland’s sophomores are taking ISATs on April 3 and 17^th. If your student has an IEP, they will be tested on April 10 and 24^th. Please have your student to school on time on these dates. Late students will be required to miss classes to complete makeup tests on another day. Some testing will require audio: students are encouraged to bring their own headphones. If they do not, headphones will be provided. Please remember that sophomores must complete these exams to graduate.
