This week we welcome our first home band competition, The Highland Band Invitational, at Ironhorse Stadium on Saturday 9/22/18 starting at 9am. We also welcome on Wednesday, 9/19/18, our first home swim meet at ISU's Reed's Gym Pool at 6pm. We are excited to see these two groups compete at home.
We will be beginning our Parent Advisory Group meetings in October at Perkins on the corner of Olympus and Pocatello Creek Rd from 12pm-1pm. The purpose of the Parent Advisory Group will be to 1) open up avenues of communication between school and parents; 2) work together to help the school improve; and 3) deepen parent and school relationships. Letters to were sent at the end of last week inviting
juniors and sophomores with a GPA of 3.6 or higher to join National Honors
Society (NHS). The letter includes the obligations and service requirements for
NHS members. Any student that wishes to graduate with honors distinction needs
to review the requirements in the student
handbook (p. 31) and follow a course plan (pp. 34-36). Those that are
interested in joining NHS need to fill out the application by Wednesday,
September 26th. If you haven’t received a letter by Thursday
(9/20), please contact the NHS advisor, Stefanie Plato at platost@sd25.us.

HHS Academic Intervention
The goal of Highland High School is to offer a
safe and comprehensive learning experience focused on preparing all students to
achieve success and happiness in college, career, and in life. School administration, teachers, and school counselors will work
to provide supports to help students learn. Highland has the following process
in place for identifying and intervening to support students who may struggle
academically.
Highland has an intervention team made up of
teachers, administration, and counselors. They meet every 2 weeks.
Highland’s Intervention Team identifies students
who need support by reviewing the following information:
- Teacher referral.
- Student grades, credits, and progress towards
graduation.
- Student attendance.
- Student behavior.
From the information reviewed the Highland
Intervention Team will identify students who need support and will provide
interventions.
The list of students with interventions will be
shared with teachers and discussions on how best to help a student will take
place. Also, parents of these students will be contacted.
The interventions may include, but are not
limited to, the following:
- Level 1: The students will be discussed
in department meetings to collaborate an effort of support for the
student.The teacher or teachers of the class or classes the student needs
support in will make contact with the student to plan for additional
support. The parent/guardian of the student will be notified of tutoring
opportunities available at Highland High School.
- Level 2: A school counselor or
administrator will meet with a student to develop a contract with specific
goals for academic improvement. The student will engage in specific
lessons, assignments, or assessments targeting areas diagnosed as needing
support as part of the contract. The students teacher(s) and the students
parent/guardian will be contacted for input on the contract.
- Level 3: The Highland Intervention Team
will refer the student to school administration for assessment to access
special education services, to attend a District Academic Progress
Committee hearing, both, or some other form of intervention. The
parent/guardian of the student will be involved in the process.
The interventions that are decided upon are
intended to be positive support for students and not a punitive consequence.
They are designed to connect students to the resources around them and help
them achieve their potential, closing gaps in their learning. Ultimately,
the decision to access the resources and supports that will help students be
successful is up to them. Failure to do so will be seen as insubordination to
the schools efforts to help a student learn and progress.
If the student does not access the resources and
supports provided, and fails a class, the student may not have the opportunity
to retake the class in their school schedule. The size of the student body and
the pressures this places on school scheduling limits the ability to adjust
schedules. As a result, these students may be required to make-up the class or
classes they fail by attending summer school, through an online credit recovery
course, through a correspondence course, or by some other means.
Tutoring is available at Highland High School at
no cost to students from 4-5pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Transportation home
from tutoring is not provided by the school. Please see exact tutoring times,

This evening is focused on answering the question of 'how to pay for college' by having various representatives from Idaho State University speak about options for incoming college students.
