Dear Highland Ram Parent/Guardian and Student,
We want to thank
everyone for being so supportive of all of our events we have been having.
Back to School Night was a great event. We want to give a special thank you to Connections Credit Union for the great food and prizes.
September was a busy month in volleyball, soccer, football, band performances/competitions, tryouts for our school play coming up, our clubs started getting rolling, and our Future Farmers of America (FFA) students helped put on Ag Days at Swore Farms teaching more than 1600 elementary students all the things they have been learning in their Ag classes. Our RAM TV students were able to participate in a mock airplane crash at the Pocatello Airport working as news reporters live at the scene. They were worked with first responders from around the area and local news reporters.

We are so proud of our
students and how they have been conducting themselves as Highland Rams. We are proud of our faculty and the amazing
learning opportunities they are providing for our students. They truly care about each student and their learning. Thank you for supporting Highland in their activities and we
hope to continue to see you in attendance.
October will be another
busy month. We are kicking off the month with Homecoming week, Monday October 3-Friday
October 7. The theme for Homecoming Week is Olympics. We
will celebrate Senior Nights for both girls and boys soccer during the week and we
will be playing the Homecoming Football game against the Madison
Bobcats in the Holt Arena (see events schedule below) on Thursday night. We will finish the week with our Homecoming Dance-The Gold Medal Ball, on Friday at 8pm at Highland High School. The cost is $35 if you get your tickets by Thursday. If you buy tickets at the door they cost $40. Reminder that students
will not be in school on Thursday, October 6 and Friday, October 7 for Teacher Professional Development
Days.
Also, take note that on October 18 we have College Financial Aid Information Night from 6:30-7:30 in the HHS media center and on November 1st we have Fill out your FASFA night from 6:30-8:30 in the HHS media center. These nights are designed to provide support for parents/guardians and to help students fill out the paperwork for financial aid that can help pay for college.

The focus of this month’s
letter will be to provide information about Advanced Opportunities/Fast Forward
money from the State of Idaho and about PSAT Day coming up October 19.
Advanced
Opportunities/Fast Forward is an effort put forth by the state of Idaho to encourage
and support students in making the transition from high school to
post-secondary college or career opportunities. To accomplish this, the
State of Idaho has potentially given every student $4,125 to be spent for dual credit classes (up to $75 per credit),
advanced placement tests, professional certification tests, or challenge tests
(full cost), and overload courses (courses that may cost money that exceed the
amount of classes, 5, a student takes in the trimester...in other words
correspondence or online classes). Highland High School, and the other
high schools in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District #25, are offering
several opportunities for students to get college credits and career technical
certifications while in high school in order to maximize a student’s
opportunity to both use Advanced Opportunities/Fast Forward money and to be
college and career ready upon graduation.
In order to access these
opportunities please contact the school and speak with the College and Career
Advisors or the School Counselors at (208)237-1300. Make sure that you
have completed all the necessary applications and registrations to both access
the money and be enrolled with the college you are gaining dual credit from. Again, with questions please call our College and
Career Advisors or the School Counselors.
PSAT is a practice test
for the SAT test. In Idaho all sophomores will take the PSAT exam on
October 19. Juniors can also take the
PSAT at a cost of $15. Juniors need to
see a school counselor to sign up.
Taking the test prepares students for the SAT and can qualify students
to be a National Merit Scholar. Also, on this same day, seniors will be
attending a major and minors fair at Idaho State University. They will be
riding the bus and are NOT allowed to drive themselves to and from this
event.
Freshman and Juniors not taking the PSAT on this
day will be participating in service projects.
These projects are designed to give back to our community who gives so
much to Highland in both the Pocatello and Chubbuck areas. We are trying
to plan a day of service once per trimester at Highland High School in order
teach our students the importance of giving back to our great community.
The schedule on PSAT/DAY of SERVICE DAY October 19 will be as
follows:
8:32AM-8:45AM Students
report to Advisory, attendance taken and day's events shared, students begin

8:45AM-9:20AM Assembly

2:38PM-3:42PM 5th Period
Just a few things to wrap up. Midterm grades will be
posted the first week of October. Please
call or contact a student’s teacher or school administration if you have questions or concerns (208)237-1300. We have an intervention team that meets
weekly to identify and support students struggling with academics, attendance
or behavior. Ms. Marchand is leading this team. We care about our students
and want them to succeed. If you feel your student needs extra support, please contact Ms Marchand, the school counselors, or school administration.
Finally, reminder that October 31st is the last day for Seniors to submit Senior Photos to Mrs. Greco for the yearbook.
