Dear Highland Parent, Student, and Ram Supporter,
We wanted to take time and recognize our amazing counselors in honor of counselor's week. Our counselors work so hard and carry such a heavy load. We love them and are grateful for all they do for our students and our school. We recognize and appreciate their dedication. We wish them a Happy Counselor's week.
Reminder that finals for 2nd Trimester are next Wednesday 3/1/23 and Thursday 3/2/23. No school for students next Friday 3/3/23 because of record day.
Congratulations to the Highland Cheer Team and the Highland Wrestling Team for being recognized as 5A Academic State Champions. We are so proud of the focus and hard work of these competitive student-athletes. Our Cheer Team, after winning the 5A state championship, is now headed to Nationals in Anaheim, CA. Our Wrestling team competes in state this week. Both of these programs have worked hard to get to where they are. We wish them the best.

Make-A-Wish Week
We are wrapping up Make-A-Wish Week. Tonight is Family Feud night and then tomorrow is the Highland Idol Finals and Make-A-Wish assembly at 9:30am in the Highland Main Gym. Shirts and bracelets are still available for purchase in the bursar's office. Thank you student government for putting this on and for all your hard work. We are grateful for this opportunity to work together as a school to make Aliyah's wish come true.

Academic Planning
Academic planning sessions are in full swing with next school years Sophomore's, Juniors, and Seniors. We are doing these at school with students during class on their chromebooks. Please contact our counselors with any questions. Incoming freshman and new students will be on March 13th, 14th, and 15th. Parents will sign up for a session to participate with their student in academic planning sessions and will put the classes and programs the student is interested in, into their academic planner.

Extra Curricular's
Business Professionals of America is headed to Boise for state tomorrow at 5pm. Good luck to BPA at state competition!
For anyone interested in trying out for girls softball, there is a mandatory student meeting this Wednesday at lunch in Mrs. Coverdell's room, room B71.
For anyone interested in participating in Track & Field this spring, there is a mandatory meeting for students this Wednesday at lunch or after school in Coach Smith's room, room C31. Students only need to attend one of the meetings, at lunch or after school on Wednesday.
Season Starts: Friday, February 24th

School Calendar
There are a few important testing dates coming up. Finals for the 2nd Trimester are on March 1st and March 2nd with no school for students on March 3rd for record day. On April 12th Juniors will be taking the SAT. All other students have an online school day that day and do not need to physically come to the school. The students not taking the SAT will have work to do online. On April 25th the Juniors then take the ISAT. This too is an online day for Seniors, Sophomore's and Freshman. The Juniors need to come to school, everyone else stays home for an online day. Please mark these dates in your calendar. It is essential for our Juniors to make it on April 12 & April 25 for their tests. Please contact the school with any questions or concerns.

Here are some goodies for you all: important stuff for seniors, juniors can look forward
to Higher Ed morning, and the INL’s summer internship program is impressive indeed.
For Seniors Finishing Up with Classes on March 2nd
If you are a senior and you will finish your academics on March 2nd / the end of Tri 2,
please do NOT leave us without stopping by the CCA area. We’d like to talk to you
about your plans, get a report on any scholarships you’ve been awarded, and be sure
you know that we will – of course – continue to be a resource to you right up until
graduation. There is much to know and remember, and we want to know that you are
looped in. OK? Promise us you’ll stop by . . . pinky promise .
University of Idaho at Highland, Monday, February 27th
Our admissions rep from the University of Idaho, Andres Zamora, will be visiting
Highland the morning of Monday, February 27th , to work with all senior students who
have applied, who have been admitted, or who are in the process of applying. Andres
will assist students with the enrollment process, showing students how to navigate the U
of I website to see financial aid and scholarship notices, how to apply for housing, when
to plan for new-student orientation. As with BYU-I, we are fortunate to have admissions
reps come to us, so please mark your calendar and make time on the morning of
February 27th to meet with Andres.
BYU-I, FAFSA Deadline March 1st
If you plan to attend BYU-I in the Fall of 2023, the deadline to submit your completed
FAFSA for Grant and financial aid consideration is 1 March 2023! Just two weeks away.
If you haven’t started your FAFSA yet, or want help getting started (or getting finished),
please stop by the CCA area, and we’ll offer our guidance. Do NOT delay.
ISU’s College of Tech, What to do Next
Senior students, if you plan to attend any of ISU’s College of Technology 2-year
programs, your acceptance will NOT be complete until you sit with an advisor at the
College of Technology and get from the advisor information about your program. The
College of Technology operates on a cohort system, so student won’t be fully admitted
and have a seat with he or her name on it until the advising appointment happens. Call
the Office of Student Services at the College of Technology (208-282-2622), identify
yourself as a graduating senior, indicate which program you have applied to, and ask to
make an advising appointment. Don’t delay. Some of the College of Technology
programs are very popular and may fill up for Fall 2023 well before Highland graduates.
Scholarship Season, FAFSA
It is scholarship season for seniors. We cannot emphasize it strongly enough – NOW is
the time for seniors to be applying to any and all scholarships that are open. Some will
require transcripts, some will ask for an essay, some will need letters of
recommendation. It breaks my heart when seniors come in in late April and say they’re
ready to apply for scholarships, haven’t done a FAFSA, have not reached out to us all
year. Our scholarship binder is ready for review and reference. Please stop by and go
through it
Higher Ed+ Morning for Juniors, March 7 th
It is tradition in SE Idaho to set aside time in the third trimester for junior students to look
ahead to their senior year and begin the process of considering their post-high school
options. On the morning of Tuesday, March 7 th , a whole bevy of Idaho colleges and
universities will visit Highland, as well as representatives from the military, experts on
financial aid and scholarships, and folks who can talk about apprenticeships and job
training. Almost like a conference, juniors will decide which sessions they want to attend
and then pass between the sessions. Attendance will be taken that morning and juniors
are expected to participate. Another great in-person opportunity for our students to meet
people who will help them navigate their senior year.
INL Summer Internships – Deadlines Approaching
We have promoted these before, but the Idaho National Laboratory has a very
impressive summer internship program – mostly for college students, it’s true, but it is
also open to high school students (rising high school seniors or newly graduated
seniors). I was just on the website and there are fully three pages of summer 2023
internships. The deadlines posted range from tomorrow (Valentines Day) to March.

Tutoring is available after school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4-5pm in room B4.
Math Tutoring is also available at lunch Monday-Friday in Room B70 with Ms. Johnston (
johnstma@sd25.us).
Transportation home is not provided from tutoring.

FAMILY SPORTS PASS
Highland is now selling family passes that include all home events for the school year, even football games! (Tournaments playoffs, state, and events at the other high schools in the district not included).
Family Passes are $250 for 2 adults and 4 children(14 and under)
$125 for 1 adult and 4 children(14 and under)
Here are the individual costs of tickets for the 2022-23 school year:
Adults-$7.00
Visiting Students and Senior Citizens (60 & Older)-$5.00
Children 12 and under-$5.00
District Middle School Students w/Activity Card-$4.00
Children 5 and Under-Free
