Congratulations to Sawyer Anderson winning the 5A state championship at the 98lb weight class as a freshman. He is the first freshman to win a state championship in the history of Highland High School. Highland had 6 wrestlers place in the top 6 at state. Great job Highland Wrestlers!
Congratulations to Speech and Debate qualifying 26 for state with 9-1st alternates and 3-2nd alternates. We are so proud of our students and our coaches! Great job! Can't wait for state!

Dear Highland Students & Families,
Below is the last blog post for Tri 2 – incredibly. We know there is a lot on everyone’s
plate, but we hope you’ll take a minute to read the items below: deadlines are coming
up fast, FAFSAs need to be done, and our juniors can look forward to Higher Ed+ Day
next week. Read through, make notes, mark your calendars.
Scholarship Reminders
Yes, there is a blurb below about scholarships, but we wanted to lead this week with a
reminder about scholarships for our seniors because some of them have deadlines that
are looming. This information is also on the Senior Google classroom. Here goes:
-Idaho Opportunity Scholarships. Generous state money for attendance at an
Idaho college, university, or program. Renewable for up to four years a long as
the student is making reasonable progress toward the degree. There are different
versions of this scholarship, which are very generous. Need your Social Security
# and your EDUID. Deadline is March 1 st . Don’t miss out.
-Perkins Scholarship. Funded by the school district’s Education Foundation.
Requires an essay and letters of recommendation. This scholarship award will
travel with you to wherever you attend college or training. Deadline is tomorrow,
February 28th .
-Pocatello Mayor Promise of Tomorrow Scholarship. This scholarship will pay
$2,000 ($500 for four semesters) to attend any of Idaho State’s post-secondary
programs. And the great gift of this scholarship is that it is geared toward the
students who may not think of themselves as college material or don’t have great
GPAs. This one is for you. Short essay is required, recommendations. Deadline
is tomorrow, February 28th .
-Pocatello Realtors. This one just came to us last week. Information is in our
binder. Deadline is not until April, but applicants are asked to answer an essay
prompt. Stop by, get the details, and get started.
For Seniors Finishing Classes This Week – Heads Up!
If you are a senior and you will finish your academics this week, please do NOT leave
us without stopping by the CCA area. We are asking all our seniors what they have
earned for scholarship money at ALL the colleges / programs they have been accepted
to. It will be part of your / their check-out process this week. Please make note of your
scholarship awards. We’d also like to talk to you about your plans, get a report on your
jobs / goals / aspirations, and want to be sure you know that we will – of course –
continue to be a resource to you right up until graduation. There is much to know and
remember, and we want to keep you looped in. OK? Promise us you’ll stop by . . . pinky
promise.
BYU-I, FAFSA Deadline March 1st (Wednesday!)
If you plan to attend BYU-I in the Fall of 2023, the deadline to submit your completed
FAFSA for Grant and financial aid consideration is 1 March 2023 – Wednesday! One of
the beautiful things about BYU-I (unlike many colleges), is that they will SAVE your
scholarship and grant awards for you even if you are going on a mission. So get your
FAFSA done. If you haven’t started your FAFSA yet, or want help getting started (or
getting finished), please stop by the CCA area, and we’ll offer our guidance. Do NOT
delay.
Scholarship Season, FAFSA
It is scholarship season for seniors. We cannot emphasize it strongly enough – NOW is
the time for seniors to be applying to any and all scholarships that are open. Some will
require transcripts, some will ask for an essay, some will need letters of
recommendation. It breaks my heart when seniors come in at the end of April and say
they’re ready to apply for scholarships, haven’t done a FAFSA, have not reached out to
us all year. Think of scholarship money as a diminishing pot; it is being drawn down
every single day – and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Our scholarship binder is ready for
review and reference. Please stop by and go through it
ISU’s College of Tech & What to do Next
Senior students, if you plan to attend any of ISU’s College of Technology programs,
your acceptance will NOT be complete until you sit with an advisor at the College of
Technology and get from that person information about your program. The College of
Technology operates on a cohort system, so students won’t be fully admitted and have
a seat with he or her name on it until the advising appointment happens. Full admission
to College of Tech programs is also necessary for awarding of financial aid and
scholarships. Call the Office of Student Services at the College of Technology (208-282-
2622), identify yourself as a graduating senior, indicate which program you have applied
to, and ask to make an advising appointment. Don’t delay. Some of the College of
Technology programs are very popular and may fill up for Fall 2023 well before
Highland graduates.
Higher Ed+ Morning for Juniors, Tuesday, March 7th
It is tradition in SE Idaho to set aside time in the third trimester for junior students to look
ahead to their senior year and begin the process of considering their post-high school
options. On the morning of Tuesday, March 7th , a whole bevy of Idaho colleges and
universities will visit Highland, as well as representatives from the military, experts on
financial aid and scholarships, and folks who will talk about apprenticeships and job
training. Almost like a conference, juniors will decide which three sessions they want to
attend and then pass between the sessions. Attendance will be taken throughout the
morning and juniors are expected to participate. More information is on the Junior
Google classroom. Another great in-person opportunity for our students to meet people
who will help them navigate their senior year. If you are cross-enrolled at Pocatello or
Century, those high schools will take their students TO Idaho State for Higher Ed Day
on Monday, March 6 th . Students can contact Amber Hall at PHS or Jessica Woodland at
CHS to be added to their participant lists.
Construction Combine – March 29 & 30
In the spring, a select few students from each high school have an opportunity to
participate in the Construction Combine during which they are introduced to, and learn
some, basic construction skills and techniques such as framing, drywall, plumbing, and
much more. It will be two full days out of school, so students need to be in good
attendance and academic standing and have to apply by following the link below.
Students are expected to fully participate for BOTH days. Mark your calendars and
apply by March 15 th . Female students are particularly encouraged to apply. Details
below.
If you have questions, staff from Continuing Education and Workforce Training will be at
school on Wednesday, March 8th , in the Commons area during lunch. Get more
information then. Some students who participate may be hired by contractors for
summer work.
Construction Combine Wednesday & Thursday March 29 & 30 7:30 to 5 pm Home Depot in Chubbuck (students have to get themselves there) Lunch will be provided. Apply at this URL: https://cetrain.isu.edu/enrollment/course/construction-combine/ Finals are this week, so we hope all our students will do their best work. The junior year is very important for our students who plan to go on to college and training. Juniors don’t lose sight of the future and work hard. Same for you, seniors. And sophomores.
