IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The Highland Foundation is dedicated to raising money to benefit Highland High School. For example, last school year the Highland Foundation was able to remodel the school library from funds that were donated through the foundation, bringing it up to date and making it a powerful resource for the school. There are some benefits you can recieve from donating money to the Highland Foundation. One benefit is that you are helping improve Highland High school. Also, there are a couple of tax benefits. Your donation(s) can be written off as an itemized deduction on your Federal Taxes. In addition, there is a specialized tax rebate that can be applied to State Taxes for donations to a non-profit/public school entity allowing for up to 1/2 back.

The foundation has been working to find ways that make it easier for you to give to Highland High School. The first step in this process is establishing a Venmo account. Venmo is an app that can be downloaded to your phone and facilitates the transfer of money from one to another. Once set up, it literally takes just seconds. The Highland Foundation bank account is attached to its newly established Venmo account allowing for donations to go directly to the account. The account handle name is @HighlandFoundation, you will see Melissa Nielsen's name (the school librarian) as she is the treasurer for the Highland Foundation. You can donate up to $2,999 in one transaction. Please type in where you want this money to be donated (English, Math, Wrestling, Football, Library, Etc). If you do not specify where then it will automatically be assigned to the general account and will not be earmarked for a specific area.

Coming up on February 4th Highland High School will be holding an Academic/Extracurricular fair both during the school day and in the evening.  The schedule during the 4th will be as follows=

1^st Period 8:32am-9:20am

Advisory 9:25am-10:05am (Meet and take 9^th, 10^th and 11^th grade students to the CTE/Clubs Fair in Lower Gym.  Senior Advisories will present information in either advisory or in the auditorium).

2^nd Period 10:10am-10:58am

3^rd Period 11:03am-12:01pm

LUNCH 12:01pm-12:36pm

4^th Period 12:41pm-1:39pm

5^th Period 1:44pm-2:42pm

The evening of February 4th will be an open house format from 6:30pm-8pm at Highland and will be for current 8th graders coming to Highland next school year, along with current 9th, 10th and 11th graders. We will have academic departments, counselors and college and career advisors in the commons area, athletics and activities in the lower gym and CTE programs and clubs in the cafeteria.

The purpose of these events are to inform students and parents/guardians of the options students have at Highland in order to make informed decisions during academic planning for the 2019-2020 school year.

It is the time of year again for students to review their academic plans.  Counselors will be meeting with students throughout the next month to review graduation requirements and answer any questions students may have about their academic plans.  After counselors have had a chance to meet with students, teachers will assist students in completing their academic plans during extended Teacher Advisory time on March 4^th and March 11^th.  In the meantime, we encourage you to login to Infinite Campus and discuss your student’s academic choices with them by reviewing their online academic planner.

The Highland High School facilities committee will be working with Briscoe/Bybee Contractors Corp. and Booth Architects to build a facility for Iron Horse stadium that provides restrooms, concessions, and a press box. The current timeline has this facility breaking ground in April and being completed in August. The long term idea is to hold the first part of a varsity football season, among other events, at Iron Horse Stadium. To do this additional facilities are needed. The rough plans (meaning these plans may be modified) are included here. Right now, the working bid is $259,000. Highland High School is working to find a partner to help pay for this project along with future projects that they will pursue.

The structure would sit approximately 10 feet back from the wall and stairs that provide entry to the bleachers and will overlook the field. The upper rooms would be for coaches, radio and statistician's/scoreboard operators. The deck would provide cover for concessions and would be for filmers. The lower rooms would be concessions (on the right side of the picture below) and a multipurpose room (on the left side). The concessions would have a big window in the front and a pickup window on the side. The bathrooms would be in the back of the building with an entrance on each side. This is visible in the last picture of the plans provided. College and Career Advisors and a counselor will be offering extra help with scholarships Wednesdays during lunch in the CCA office. Sarah, Amanda and Cali would love to look over scholarship essays and answer questions to help students earn as much money as possible!

Seniors need to speak to the registrar, Elaine Whitehead, to have their transcript(s) sent to the college(s)/university they have applied for. To meet the above mentioned deadlines, students must give Elaine a week’s notice to insure that it is received by the college prior to the scholarship date.

Counselors have been in Health classrooms to discuss Healthy Relationships as well as Suicide Prevention. Please speak to your student(s) about the information that was presented and discussed. If you have questions please contact Cali Baker (relationships) or Christa Santos-Smith (prevention) in the Counseling Center.

This month’s Sexual Harassment presentation was given in TA/Home room on January 14^th. Please contact Tricia Harvala in the Counseling Center if you have any questions.

REMINDER

Reminder on 1/30/19 students do not have school due to professional development for teachers.

Seniors have been randomly chosen to participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test (https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/about/)on February 22, 2019. Letters were sent out regarding participation to those randomly chosen. If you would not like your student to participate and you received a letter, please contact Mr. Wallace (wallacbr@sd25.us).
