HHS 10/9-10/16/17

Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,
  
On Wednesday 10/11/17 is PSAT, College & Career Readiness, and Freshman 4-Year Planning/Service Day.  All sophomores will be taking the PSAT, paid for by the state of Idaho, and Juniors who signed up and paid will also be taking the test.  Some of the Juniors and all of the seniors will be participating in college and career readiness workshops at Highland High School.  These workshops include scholarship applications and essays, college applications, mock interviews, apprenticeships, FASFA completion, resumes, visit to ISU College of Technology and Major/Minors Fair.  Some of the Juniors will be going on a field trip to ISU to watch a performance of The Crucible.  Freshman will participate in 4-year planning and then will go to the wellness complex to participate in a community service project.

The schedule for Wednesday 10/11/17 is as follows:
   8:32am-12:45pm=PSAT for all Sophomores and Juniors who signed up and paid $15. 
   8:32AM-9AM-Freshman/Juniors not taking PSAT/Seniors=Assembly Main Gym
   9am-12:30PM Some Juniors not taking the PSAT will be going on Field Trip to ISU Performance of The Crucible.
   9:15am-10:50am=4 Year Planning Freshman in assigned rooms with TA’s
   9:15AM-12:30PM=Seniors/Juniors (not taking PSAT) workshops
   10:50am-12:15am Freshman Service at Wellness Complex
   12:30PM-1:25PM Lunch
   1:30PM-2:33PM 4th Period
   2:38PM-3:42PM 5th Period

The Highland Counseling Center recommends in order to be ready for the PSAT=
  • Students make sure you are in your assigned testing room prior to the tardy bell ringing. 
  • Junior lists and sophomore room map are located outside of the Counseling Center.
  • If you have questions about your assigned testing room, see your TA teacher or Mrs. Santos-Smith.
Make sure students taking the PSAT you:

  • Eat a good breakfast
  • Bring at least two #2 sharpened pencils. Mechanical pencils not allowed
  • Bring your calculator. Approved calculators are listed on page 25 of your PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide

Next Steps Idaho 
In late September, direct admissions letters will notify more than 20,000 public high school seniors that they have been accepted to college. Using college entrance exam scores and GPA information reported from students’ junior years, the State Board of Education works with Idaho’s higher education institutions to proactively admit Idaho’s graduating seniors to six or more of the state’s public institutions where they can continue their education.
Students simply submit an application for enrollment at the college or colleges of their choice to accept this opportunity (by February 16, 2018). This year, students can submit one application to one or more of Idaho’s colleges and universities for free, using Apply Idaho. 
Visit Nextsteps.idaho.gov, your counselor or the CCA for questions.

Seniors across the state should receive their direct admissions letter this week.  Once you have read all of the information, you can go to nextsteps.idaho.gov and utilize APPLY IDAHO to apply to several Idaho schools with one application.
The following is what each student will need to successfully fill out the application=
  •  Use of legal name
  •  State ID (EDUID#)  see the College/Career Advisors or the Counselors for this number
  •  Date of birth

)      ***An email account that will still be accessible after graduation*** It is very important that this email be utilized now and after graduation to receive updates/information from the Idaho colleges you apply to.
Once you finish the APPLY IDAHO easy online application, colleges and university should be in contact with you via email within a two week time frame.  Depending on the college/university, you may be required to submit more information so watch your emails carefully!

On October 11th (PSAT Day) any Juniors who are not taking the PSAT and all seniors will have the opportunity to participate in several activities at Highland. We will have rooms available to complete scholarship applications, FAFSA, resumes, and do mock interviews. There will also be apprenticeship programs on campus for students who are interested: Iron Workers, Plummers and possibly Electrical Workers. If students are interested in attending the majors/minors fair at ISU we have one bus going for the first 40 students who sign up in the College and Career Advising Center (CCA Office). Also ISU College of Technology has offered to host our students for a “Tech Day” allowing 40 students to tour their programs sign-ups for this will also be in the CCA office. Please be aware that attendance will be taken on PSAT day.


REMINDER: Students taking Dual Enrollment at Idaho State: Early College Program at ISU plans to enforce a strict registration deadline of September 29th meaning you students must register for the classes AND request funding by that date. If any students are having difficulties requesting funding on their Advanced Opportunities portal please send them to Mackenzie Smith the CCA at Highland.

Be sure and purchase your $2 Ticket or Tickets for the Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello Raffle benefiting Athletics and Activities.  Last year a Pocatello High School parent won a brand new Dodge Dart all expenses paid including taxes.  Over $56,000 was raised for school activities in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District in last years raffle.  Support athletics and activities again this year and buy raffle tickets for $2 for the chance to win a new Jeep Renegade worth $25,000 donated by Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can buy.  All expenses for the car are covered, including taxes.  All proceeds go to school athletics and activities.  Tickets are on sale until May 21, 2018 and the drawing will take place at the new Lithia Dealership in Pocatello on May 31, 2018.  Contact the school bursar to buy tickets (208)237-1300 and/or look to buy tickets and see the car on display at home events throughout the school year.
