HHS 10/2-10/9/17

Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,
  
There has been an update on our school calendar.  Thanksgiving break this year will not be a full week, but will be Wednesday November 22-Friday November 24th.  We will be in school on Monday November 20th and Tuesday November 21st.

We are offering tutoring every Tuesday-Thursday after school from 4-5:30pm.  Check the academic calendar or the calendar for the week below for room numbers.

 Reminder students do not have school on Thursday 10/5-Friday 10/6/17 this week because of Teacher Professional Development.

 Recently Pocatello/Chubbuck School District #25 was featured on Channel 6 news for its focus on preparing students for life after high school.  Specifically Highland High School was featured, but all of the District's High School's and Alternative School could have been featured.  Each school works diligently to prepare students for college, military, and/or career opportunities.  This is a collaborative effort between Counselors and College & Career Advisors.  Both the Counselors and the College & Career Advisors are an invaluable resource we highly encourage parents and students to use to achieve their post-high school goals.

Highland student, Madison Rausch, was featured on the story from channel 6 news.  Madison will graduate this year with not only a high school diploma, but an associates degree.  The same degree most college students gain after their first 2 years at a college or upon leaving a junior college.  Although this may not be possible for all students because of the different classes and activities they are involved in, it is possible for some.  We are so proud of Madison for her careful planning, her grit and, focused determination.  She has worked hand-in-hand with Mrs. Baker, her school counselor, and Mackinzie Smith, the College & Career Advisor.  Madison's efforts, example, and scholarship are inspiring.  She is a living representation of the Highland Ram mantra-Right Attitude Means Success!

We thank the Counselors and College & Career Advisors for all they do for our students and parents.  Please make sure and check the academic calendar for upcoming events focused on post-secondary education goals such as college and job-site visits, applying for colleges or careers, filling out student aid/grant forms(FASFA), applying for scholarships, etc and please attend them when possible.

Next Steps Idaho 
In late September, direct admissions letters will notify more than 20,000 public high school seniors that they have been accepted to college. Using college entrance exam scores and GPA information reported from students’ junior years, the State Board of Education works with Idaho’s higher education institutions to proactively admit Idaho’s graduating seniors to six or more of the state’s public institutions where they can continue their education.
Students simply submit an application for enrollment at the college or colleges of their choice to accept this opportunity (by February 16, 2018). This year, students can submit one application to one or more of Idaho’s colleges and universities for free, using Apply Idaho. 
Visit Nextsteps.idaho.gov, your counselor or the CCA for questions.

Seniors across the state should receive their direct admissions letter this week.  Once you have read all of the information, you can go to nextsteps.idaho.gov and utilize APPLY IDAHO to apply to several Idaho schools with one application.
The following is what each student will need to successfully fill out the application=
  •  Use of legal name
  •  State ID (EDUID#)  see the College/Career Advisors or the Counselors for this number
  •  Date of birth

)      ***An email account that will still be accessible after graduation*** It is very important that this email be utilized now and after graduation to receive updates/information from the Idaho colleges you apply to.
Once you finish the APPLY IDAHO easy online application, colleges and university should be in contact with you via email within a two week time frame.  Depending on the college/university, you may be required to submit more information so watch your emails carefully!

On October 11th (PSAT Day) any Juniors who are not taking the PSAT and all seniors will have the opportunity to participate in several activities at Highland. We will have rooms available to complete scholarship applications, FAFSA, resumes, and do mock interviews. There will also be apprenticeship programs on campus for students who are interested: Iron Workers, Plummers and possibly Electrical Workers. If students are interested in attending the majors/minors fair at ISU we have one bus going for the first 40 students who sign up in the College and Career Advising Center (CCA Office). Also ISU College of Technology has offered to host our students for a “Tech Day” allowing 40 students to tour their programs sign-ups for this will also be in the CCA office. Please be aware that attendance will be taken on PSAT day.


REMINDER: Students taking Dual Enrollment at Idaho State: Early College Program at ISU plans to enforce a strict registration deadline of September 29th meaning you students must register for the classes AND request funding by that date. If any students are having difficulties requesting funding on their Advanced Opportunities portal please send them to Mackenzie Smith the CCA at Highland.

Be sure and purchase your $2 Ticket or Tickets for the Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello Raffle benefiting Athletics and Activities.  Last year a Pocatello High School parent won a brand new Dodge Dart all expenses paid including taxes.  Over $56,000 was raised for school activities in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District in last years raffle.  Support athletics and activities again this year and buy raffle tickets for $2 for the chance to win a new Jeep Renegade worth $25,000 donated by Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can buy.  All expenses for the car are covered, including taxes.  All proceeds go to school athletics and activities.  Tickets are on sale until May 21, 2018 and the drawing will take place at the new Lithia Dealership in Pocatello on May 31, 2018.  Contact the school bursar to buy tickets (208)237-1300 and/or look to buy tickets and see the car on display at home events throughout the school year.
