Congratulations to our Highland Cheer Team for winning the 5A State Championship! Highland was returning state champions and brought home the title again! We are so proud of our team and Coach Jessica Gallup and her assistants for all their hard work and amazing accomplishments.

Highland had 2 students who scored in the top 2.5% on the PSAT of hispanic or latino students in the nation. Aunika Ramirez and Ben Elizarraras. We are very proud of the academic achievements of both these students. We are excited that their hard work is recognized and we appreciate all they do to live the RAM Attitudes.

Speech and Debate Coach Robin Christensen was recently recognized by the National Speech and Debate Association and received the Distinguished Service Gold Key. Her work of hosting and tabulating tournmaents, serving locally as a district leader, and serving as an advocate for speech and debate is appreciated and to be recognized. Beyond this she has provided students a platform to share their voices. We are so proud of Coach Robin Christensen and for all her hard work.

Currently, she is preparing for the district speech competition that will be happening today, Monday 3/25/19, at Highland High School. Good luck to all those participating.

Reminder that the Idaho Legislature recently passed a bill allowing for a STEM designation to be included on a student’s high school diploma. We currently have 61 Seniors that qualify but only 9 have applied.  

Students who successfully complete all graduation requirements established by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District may receive a high school diploma designated as a STEM diploma if they meet the following criteria:

·         Complete eight (8) credits in mathematics

·         Complete eight (8) credits in science

·         Complete five (5) additional credits of the student’s choice in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.

Students who are interested in applying for the STEM diploma designation can see their counselor for

an application.  Applications must be completed and returned to the school registrar prior to May 1, 2019.

This month’s Sexual Harassment presentation was given in TA/Home room. Please contact Cali Baker in the Counseling Center if you have any questions.

The Idaho Congressional Delegation’s Service Day Academy for East Idaho is on April 13, 2019, from 1-3pm EIL-Energy Innovation Lab at 75 University Blvd., Idaho Falls. Find out how to receive a Congressional nomination from a member of the Idaho delegation.

ISAT Testing--Sophomores will take ISATs this coming Monday.  Lists and room assignments have been given to sophomore TA teachers as well as posted outside of the Counseling and Career Center. Please ensure they know where to go and that they are to school ON TIME.  The second ISAT test will be on Monday April 9^th.  They will need to bring their headphones if they have them.

SAT Testing-Juniors will take the SAT College Entrance Exam on April 9^th at HHS. Room assignments will be hung up at the end of this week outside of the Counseling and Career Center and junior TA teachers will review assignments next Monday, April 1^st in class. The State of Idaho pays for the cost of the exam. Juniors should be utilizing their CollegeBoard account through their PSAT scores or Kahn Academy to study for this exam.

Senior Info-

-          Scholarship deadlines are FAST approaching!! If you have a senior student who has been involved in sports during high school please send them down to the CCA office and ask for the Chad’s Rental: Marty & Cindy Hodge Scholarship Application. This is due April 1^st!!

-          Seniors should start checking their personal emails religiously for information from various colleges/scholarships for acceptance steps etc.

o    ISU Early Registration for incoming freshmen students for fall 2019 is April 2^nd – 5^th.  This evet gives new incoming freshmen the opportunity to register for classes in the fall before the upperclassmen, therefore giving them first dibs on hard to get into classes. Students can RSVP to the event at:  www.isu.edu/earlyreg 

Junior Info-

-          If your Junior/Sophomore student is planning on taking any of the following classes (Bio 1101, Chem 1101, Math 1153 (Stats), Math 1170 (Calc), Math 1144 (Trig)) during the 2019/2020 school year they will need to do ALEKS testing for placement into the dual enrollment courses. Please have your student sign up with the College & Career Advisors!

The Highland Foundation is dedicated to raising money to benefit Highland High School. For example, last school year the Highland Foundation was able to remodel the school library from funds that were donated through the foundation, bringing it up to date and making it a powerful resource for the school. There are some benefits you can recieve from donating money to the Highland Foundation. One benefit is that you are helping improve Highland High school. Also, there are a couple of tax benefits. Your donation(s) can be written off as an itemized deduction on your Federal Taxes. In addition, there is a specialized tax rebate that can be applied to State Taxes for donations to a non-profit/public school entity allowing for up to 1/2 back.

The foundation has been working to find ways that make it easier for you to give to Highland High School. The first step in this process is establishing a Venmo account. Venmo is an app that can be downloaded to your phone and facilitates the transfer of money from one to another. Once set up, it literally takes just seconds. The Highland Foundation bank account is attached to its newly established Venmo account allowing for donations to go directly to the account. The account handle name is @HighlandFoundation, you will see Melissa Nielsen's name (the school librarian) as she is the treasurer for the Highland Foundation. You can donate up to $2,999 in one transaction. Please type in where you want this money to be donated (English, Math, Wrestling, Football, Library, Etc). If you do not specify where then it will automatically be assigned to the general account and will not be earmarked for a specific area.
