Highland 3/5-3/13/18



Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,

We invite all to come and watch our drama program put on our spring musical, Lucky Stiff, Thursday March 8th, Friday March 9th, Saturday March 10th and Monday March 12th. The Highland Auditorium doors will open at 7pm to begin seating and the show begins at 7:30pm. Cost is $7 general admission or $5 with activity card.

ISAT Testing Information for Sophomore Parents
·         Sophomores will be tested in the areas of English, Math, and Science
·         All ISAT Tests are a graduation requirement.
·         Parents cannot “opt out” to keep students from needing to complete ISAT testing.
·         Students report to the testing room that day for 1st hour. (Assigned rooms are covered in students’ Teacher Advisory and are posted outside the Counseling Center)
·         The first test is April 2nd     (2nd day is April 10th. More info. on this date to come) and students need to be in their testing room on time.
·         Please check your schedules and change any doctor, dentist, etc. appointments you have that day, if possible.
·         Please have your student bring your own ear buds, if they have them, otherwise headphones will be provided.
·         Students will test 1st, 2nd, and 3rd hour.
·         Students need to be prepared to eat lunch at the school with either a sack lunch or with food from the cafeteria.
·         ISATs are not timed tests.  Students who do not finish before lunch will need to bring their lunch to the Media Center and resume testing once done eating.
·         Students are not be allowed ANY ELECTRONIC DEVICES while testing.  They should not have them with them in the testing room.  If they have them on their person, your student’s test may be invalidated.

Update on Boundary Information=
Boundaries have been decided and voted upon by our school board. Please click on the following link and choose the interactive maps for middle and high school boundaries for the 2018-19 school year. These maps have a spot where you can type in your address and see which school is your boundary school for the 2018-19 school year.

 The school board also voted the following=

  • Incoming 9th grade students of full-time school employees supervised by the building principal will have choice to attend their boundary high school or the high school where their parent is employed.
  • Incoming 9th grade students of paid coaches hired before September 2017 and Head Coaches hired after September 2017 will have choice to attend their boundary high school or the high school where their parent is employed.
  • Current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students do have a choice of attending the current high school they are attending or, if applicable, their new boundary high school without extracurricular penalty.
  • Current 6th through 8th grade students can attend a high school out of their boundary without extracurricular penalty if they have a sibling attending the same high school. 


 Current 9th, 10th and 11th grade students must fill out the attached form and give it to the high school registrar before March 9, 2018 indicating whether the student will stay put in the school they chose as school of choice or attend their new boundary school. Failure to fill out the form will default the students enrollment to the school they chose as their school of choice.

All other students are able to transfer, if approved, from their assigned boundary high school to a high school of their choice. A transfer form must be filled out and approval of the transfer is based on specific criteria set forth by the school district. Transfer is primarily based on enrollment in a high school with regards to its capacity. 

Incoming 9th Grade student transfer requests (for students to which the sibling rule does not apply) given to the high school registrar by March 15th, if approved, are not subject to restrictions on extracurricular eligibility. All other transfers are subject to restrictions regarding participation in extracurricular activities including not being able to participate for 365 days from the date of transfer.

Business Professionals of America (BPA) is sending 25 students to state! We are proud of these students and wish them the best. State will be held this Thursday 3/8/18-Saturday 3/10/18 at the Riverside Hotel in Boise, ID.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is sending 11 students to state! Congratulations to these students and their advisor Mrs. Rhonda Jenkins! State will be held at the Riverside Hotel in Boise, ID on April 4th-6th. We are so excited and we know they will work hard and represent Highland well!

Debate students are heading to state this week, March 9-10th at Boise High School. More students qualified for state from Highland than any other 5A school. We are so proud of these students and Coach Robin Christensen for all their hard work and we wish them the best of luck at state competition. Cheer and Dance will be headed to Boise, ID on March 16th. Last year they were runners-up for the state title and we are excited to see them compete again this year at state. Here are is the state link=

Summary from “Academy News from Congressman Mike Simpson”
The Idaho Congressional Delegation will be hosting the annual Service Academy Day in April. 
The purpose of the event is to share information with students, parents, and school counselors/officials
about the congressional nomination process to our Nation’s Service Academies. 

Many students in Idaho are not aware of the benefits of receiving an academy education.  The U.S. Service Academies have a long tradition of excellence in training leaders for our nation.  Many of our Presidents, military and national leaders as well leaders in business, technology and industry are academy alumni.  Graduates receive an education that is second to none which will give them a competitive edge when applying for graduate programs and in the job market.

This year events will be held April 14, 2018 at the Idaho National Guard Armory in Pocatello. 

Idaho cadets, midshipmen, and academy liaison officers from each Academy will be present to share their experiences at the academies. Since congressional nominations account for three-fourths of all appointments at each academy, congressional staff will provide an overview about the Idaho nomination process and share tips for success.  Information about ROTC scholarships will be available as well as information about the U.S. Coast Guard Academy which does not require a congressional nomination.

Out of Country 2019 Spring Break Travel Opportunities
Students have the opportunity to travel to China on an educational tour during spring break 2019, March 16-March 25. Students will explore Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an. The trip includes a trip to the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City. For more information contact Camille Marchand marchaca@sd25.us or Glenda Funk funkgl@sd25.us. Enrollment ends February 16, 2018, after which time cost for the trip will increase. Students (and parents) can secure their spot on the tour with a $95.00 deposit. The trip includes airfare, lodging, two extra excursions, travel insurance, breakfast and lunch, and many cultural and exciting adventures that will last a lifetime!

Be sure and purchase your $2 Ticket or Tickets for the Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello Raffle benefiting Athletics and Activities.  Last year a Pocatello High School parent won a brand new Dodge Dart all expenses paid including taxes.  Over $56,000 was raised for school activities in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District in last years raffle.  Support athletics and activities again this year and buy raffle tickets for $2 for the chance to win a new Jeep Renegade worth $25,000 donated by Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can buy.  All expenses for the car are covered, including taxes.  All proceeds go to school athletics and activities.  Tickets are on sale until May 21, 2018 and the drawing will take place at the new Lithia Dealership in Pocatello on May 31, 2018.  Contact the school bursar to buy tickets (208)237-1300 and/or look to buy tickets and see the car on display at home events throughout the school year.
