HHS 8/28/17-9/4/17

Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,

Last year our focus as a school was on building positive relationships and developing a growth mindset.  We will continue to seek to build positive relationships as we see this as always important.  We will also continue our work in developing the growth mindset within ourselves and the students at Highland High School.  Here is a short video explaining growth mindset=

In addition to continuing our efforts on last years goals, this year our primary focus will be on collective efficacy.   Efficacy is defined as the ability to produce a desired or intended result.  Collective efficacy then is the ability to work together to produce a desired or intended result.  James Knottingham has described learning as a pit.  He explains that each of us, as we learn enter a pit.  It takes struggle, strategy, the growth mindset, and above all, collective efficacy to get out of the pit.  Below is a video and a visual graphic demonstrating this idea.

One of the best examples of collective efficacy is a video of the TV series SPARTAN.

We firmly believe at Highland High School that working together and capitalizing on each others strengths, we can overcome any obstacle we face, and we can achieve whatever we focus our efforts on.  This year we will be working together to increase learning for each student.  We will be doing a book study on Formative Assessment and working with each other, with parents, and with students to cause higher levels of learning.  Our work with students will be guided by making sure students can answer these three questions:
  1. Where am I going in my learning?
  2. Where am I now in my learning?
  3. What are my next steps to close the gap between where I am going and where I am now?
Please, feel free to ask these three questions of your students at home.

Again, we are excited for what will be a wonderful year at Highland High School.  Please do not hesitate to contact school administration for questions, concerns, or frustrations.  Working together we will continue our tradition of excellence through continual improvement.
