Rachel Wilcox, the Senior Class President, is inviting all parents and graduates who want to help plan the All Night Party, Breakfast, etc to a meeting on Wednesday, 1/18/23 in the Highland Media Center at 6pm to start to gather ideas, organize, and plan.

STEM Diploma Designation:
The Idaho Legislature recently passed a bill allowing for a STEM designation to be included on a student’s high school diploma. Students who successfully complete all graduation requirements established by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District may receive a high school diploma designated as a STEM diploma if they meet the following criteria:
· Complete eight (8) credits in mathematics
· Complete eight (8) credits in science
· Complete five (5) additional credits of the student’s choice in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.
Students who are interested in applying for the STEM diploma designation can see the Registrar for an application. Applications must be completed and returned to the Registrar prior to May 1, 2023. All students who qualify for the STEM designation will receive a seal on their diploma, notation of designation on their final transcript, cords to wear at graduation and the opportunity to apply for a $3,000 scholarship.

COLLEGE & CAREER ADVISORS
Happy New Year! The new year brings welcome change, hope, excitement for the
future, and all kinds of deadlines. Below are some tidbits for students and families to
keep in mind.
Many College Visits
Jan. 11 : Lewis-Clark College Will Visit!
Seniors, our admissions rep for Lewis-Clark State College will be here at Highland on
Wednesday, January 11 th at 1:30, in the CCA area. She will be glad to answer your
questions, walk you through scholarships and financial aid, give you information about
programs, activities, and more. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet in person with a
Lewis-Clark admissions staff member.
To All Seniors Applying to Selective Colleges
If you have applied to any Ivy Leagues colleges or highly selective colleges this fall
(Stanford, Middlebury, Amherst, Bowdoin, etc.), we are having a visitor who might
interest you. Eric Olvera is a local student who attends Harvard and can help you
navigate the process of applying and enrolling to selective colleges. He will be in the
CCA area, Thursday, January 12th, from 11:30 to 12:30. Any senior who has
permission from her faculty may stop by to talk with Eric.
Boise State University
Our admissions rep from Boise State University will return to Highland on Monday,
January 23 rd (first thing: from 8:30 to 10:30 am in the CCA area) to meet with any senior
who has questions about next steps in the BSU college process: establishing your BSU
account, checking your financial aid and scholarship pages, applying for housing, and
preparing for new-student orientation and class registration. We are very fortunate to
have Boise State come to us, so please mark your calendar and visit with Bailey Mallard
on January 23 rd .
Military Service Academies
If you are a junior and interested in applying to any of the U.S. military service
academies (West Point, Annapolis, the Coast Guard or Air Force academies), the time
to get your ducks in a row is right now. You should take the ACT or SAT early in this
calendar year, begin your academy application(s), start to line up your nomination from
members of U.S. Congress or state-elected delegations. Any questions? Talk to your
school counselors or stop by to visit with the CCAs.
Scholarship Season
Once the calendar turns and colleges begin their spring 2023 semester, our minds (and
hearts) turn to scholarships for our seniors. Remember, go first to scholarships offered
at the colleges to which you have been accepted; ask us about local scholarships
(realtors, county employees, etc.), then see what the state of Idaho has to offer (Next
Steps Idaho, Scholarship Idaho). Finally, there is lots of money out there on scholarship
websites, but if you sign up and establish an account on any one of those platforms, you
have to commit to watching your email studiously and responding promptly.
Tip: keep your scholarship log in a little spiral bound notebook that helps you track the
scholarships you’re interested in, what the requirements are, what the deadline is, when
you applied, when you expect to hear, did you accept or decline, etc.
Deferring
If you know you will be deferring your admission to college because you plan a religious
mission or military service, look on the college website to see what is required to defer
your acceptance. The CCAs can help you with this. As for deferring scholarships, that
will be unique to each school, but most schools will not defer scholarships because they
want that money to support students who are fully enrolled and matriculated. But check
with your college of choice to find out about deferring not just your admission but also
your scholarships.
Early grads
The CCAs and school counselors want to meet with each of our early grads (those
students who plan to finish their coursework at the end of the second tri-mester) before
he or she leaves school in March. We want to be sure that these students are in a good
place, well prepared for the world of work or training or college or a little respite. Even
after their academics are done, we want all our early grads to know they can come back
to school and let us help them in whatever way we can: finishing FAFSA, creating a
resume, helping with applications of all kinds. Once a ram, always a ram – right?
That’s all for now. We haven’t written in a while and we’ll keep this blog humming with
ideas and reminders. Glad you are all back after what we hope was a lovely holiday

JUNIOR GIRLS DISTINGUISHED YOUNG WOMEN SCHOLARSHIP
For all Junior Girls interested in participating in the Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program there will be a meeting for students and parents on January 10th at ISU’s Salmon River Suites. The Distinguished Young Women program is a scholarship opportunity that awards thousands in scholarship money to local Junior girls based on talent, leadership and academic excellence. Last year they awarded over $14,000 to students from Pocatello, Century and Highland High Schools. It is FREE to participate and ALL Junior girls of the Class of 2024 are welcome and encouraged to participate. If you are interested there are flyers in the front office with more information

Tutoring is available after school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4-5pm in room B4.

Math Tutoring is also available at lunch Monday-Friday in Room B70 with Ms. Johnston (johnstma@sd25.us).
Transportation home is not provided from tutoring.

FAMILY SPORTS PASS
Highland is now selling family passes that include all home events for the school year, even football games! (Tournaments playoffs, state, and events at the other high schools in the district not included).
Family Passes are $250 for 2 adults and 4 children(14 and under)
$125 for 1 adult and 4 children(14 and under)
Here are the individual costs of tickets for the 2022-23 school year:
Adults-$7.00
Visiting Students and Senior Citizens (60 & Older)-$5.00
Children 12 and under-$5.00
District Middle School Students w/Activity Card-$4.00
Children 5 and Under-Free
Senior Citizen Pass (60 or older)-Free
Student Activity Cards-$50 (good for entrance to all home games at all 3 high schools).
