Here’s some clarifications, some news, and some reminders from the College Career Advisors (CCAs).
MIS-Information ! ! ! !
One of our teachers shared an anecdote with us last week. She was asking her senior students how their college applications and the FAFSA were going. A student spoke up to say that students should not complete their FAFSA with the guidance counselors or the CCAs because they (we!) get a kickback. His father told him so. Um, not so. Untrue. Absolutely false. Incorrect. Terrifically misinformed. If you have ever completed a FAFSA, you would know that there is no way to direct a kickback to anyone and I would hope that Highland students and families have more confidence in us than that. Please – puhleeeeeze – let your CCAs and guidance counselors help you with completion and submission of your FAFSA. Their best “kickback” will be the financial aid and scholarships you earn by submitting your FAFSA. ~ Sarah
Transcripts – Two Things
- The only way your applications to training or
college programs will be complete is to submit your high school
transcripts after you finish your applications. Please do it in that
order: 1) apply, 2) request transcripts. Transcripts that arrive without a
corresponding application are deleted within a matter of days or weeks.
- How do you know if you have requested
transcripts? Just stop by the CCA area and ask Carly or Sarah. We have
access to the transcript request spreadsheet and check on that for you.
I
lied, three things:
- Once you have requested your high school transcripts be sent to colleges, please do NOT request them again, even if you receive an email saying that transcripts are still needed. Some schools and colleges have a one-month processing time for applications this fall, so check with the CCAs, sit tight, and try to be patient.
Check your e-mail for acceptances!!
One marker of adulthood is regularly checking e-mail. Those of you who have applied to training and college programs, please check your email regularly for good word about the status of your applications. And then act, if you are asked to.

If
you have applied to Idaho State University’s College of Technology or its 2- or
4-year academic programs, please consider “attending” (it is a virtual event)

Scholarships with Early Deadlines
We
have recently received information about two national scholarships with early
deadlines.
- Elks National
Foundation Scholarship. Our local Elks lodge has $5,000
to give and the national foundation awards $2 million in scholarships. But
the deadline is soon: 15 November 2021. Professor Tocher at ISU is our
point person for the local scholarships. Please follow the link below to

- Burger
King Scholarship. Awards of between $1,000 and $50,000.

One
More Scholarship
The Latino Medical Student Association
West
has $15,000 in scholarships to award to any Latino / Latina student pursuing
any pre-health profession from medicine to nursing to occupational or physical
