The Idaho Legislature recently passed a bill allowing for a STEM designation to be included on a student’s high school diploma. Students who successfully complete all graduation requirements established by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District may receive a high school diploma designated as a STEM diploma if they meet the following criteria:
· Complete eight (8) credits in mathematics
· Complete eight (8) credits in science
· Complete five (5) additional credits of the student’s choice in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.
Students who are interested in applying for the STEM diploma designation can see their counselor for an application. Applications must be completed and returned to the school registrar prior to May 1, 2019.
The dates and events for Make-A-Wish are set. All proceeds go to the student we are sponsoring through Make-A-Wish. We appreciate your support. Here are the dates=

A reminder that second trimester finals will occur on Wednesday 2/27/19-Thursday 2/28/19.
Students will not, under any circumstances, be able to take finals earlier than the dates assigned.
We understand that there will be extenuating circumstances due to medical, legal or other events that infringe on this time that cannot be controlled or determined. As a result, students who may be gone during any of their finals have the first week of school after finals to make up what they have missed. This time must be setup by the student with the teacher of the class of the final the student missed. Students who miss their finals will be recorded as having a score of 0 on their final. After the student makes up the final they have missed a grade change will be submitted.
Reminder to students and parents that the expectation for finals is that students will remain in class during finals and will not be able to checkout during class time. This time has been reserved for students to complete finals and will be protected as such. This will minimize distractions and create the best possible environment for assessment. All the high schools in the district seek academic excellence and creating an appropriate environment for assessment is essential in helping students perform at their best.

Congratulations to Jaxson Nield and Arunabh Sarkar (Public Forum Debate) and Mandi Xu and Colter Barker (World Schools Debate) who qualified for the NSDA National Debate Tournament. We also had several alternates qualify. Great job to these students and to Coach Christensen.
Great job to our Wrestlers. They were recognized as State Academic Champions with a 3.603 GPA and they took 1st at the district tournament. We have at least 17 going to the state tournament this weekend 2/22-2/23/19 at the Holt Arena.

Planning Information
The counselors were in 9th
and 10th grade math classes and English 11 classrooms the last two weeks
to help familiarize students on the academic planning process so they can
complete their planning with their parents/guardians and in future TA meetings.
More planning materials (directions on how to navigate the Academic Planner,
important information about classes, Humanities list, etc.) will be given to
students in extended TA meetings in early March.

The Highland Class of 1969 will be holding their 50th Class Reunion this summer on August 3, 2019 at the Red Lion Inn. Please contact Patti Grumbein Johanson for more details.
The Highland Foundation is dedicated to raising money to benefit Highland High School. For example, last school year the Highland Foundation was able to remodel the school library from funds that were donated through the foundation, bringing it up to date and making it a powerful resource for the school. There are some benefits you can recieve from donating money to the Highland Foundation. One benefit is that you are helping improve Highland High school. Also, there are a couple of tax benefits. Your donation(s) can be written off as an itemized deduction on your Federal Taxes. In addition, there is a specialized tax rebate that can be applied to State Taxes for donations to a non-profit/public school entity allowing for up to 1/2 back.
The foundation has been working to find ways that make it easier for you to give to Highland High School. The first step in this process is establishing a Venmo account. Venmo is an app that can be downloaded to your phone and facilitates the transfer of money from one to another. Once set up, it literally takes just seconds. The Highland Foundation bank account is attached to its newly established Venmo account allowing for donations to go directly to the account. The account handle name is @HighlandFoundation, you will see Melissa Nielsen's name (the school librarian) as she is the treasurer for the Highland Foundation. You can donate up to $2,999 in one transaction. Please type in where you want this money to be donated (English, Math, Wrestling, Football, Library, Etc). If you do not specify where then it will automatically be assigned to the general account and will not be earmarked for a specific area.
