In an effort to continually improve this newsletter we have taken some steps to better organize the information and thus improve the efficiency in which you can access it.
First, the letter will begin with the most pertinent and important information under the heading IMPORTANT INFORMATION.
Second, the rest of the information will be organized under headings that correspond with the different groups the school has created in its leadership team to meet the demands for running a high school like Highland.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
A reminder that first trimester finals will occur on Monday November 19th and Tuesday November 20th, 2018.
After
meeting with administration from the different high schools, and the district
office, the following has been decided regarding finals.
Students
will not, under any circumstances, be able to take finals earlier than the
dates assigned.
We understand that
there will be extenuating circumstances due to medical, legal or other events
that infringe on this time that cannot be controlled or determined. As a
result, students who may be gone during any of their finals have the first week
of school after finals, until November 30th, 2018, to make up what
they have missed. This time must be setup by the student with the teacher of
the class of the final the student missed. Teachers are required to submit
grades for the first trimester by November 26th, 2018. As a result,
students who miss their finals will be recorded as having a score of 0 on their
final. After the student makes up the final they have missed a grade change
will be submitted.
Reminder to
students and parents that the expectation for finals is that students will
remain in class during finals and will not be able to checkout during class
time. This time has been reserved for students to complete finals and will be
protected as such. This will minimize distractions and create the best
possible environment for assessment. All the high schools in the district
seek academic excellence and creating an appropriate environment for assessment
is essential in helping students perform at their best.
The
question then becomes, "Can I check my student out during finals?"
The answer is, not during class time. If there is an emergency then
school administration will determine how to respond and will work with those
involved. Dental appointments or other doctor appointments do not count
as emergencies and the school expectation is that these appointments will need
to be rescheduled when they do not infringe on the time dedicated for
finals. Please call the school and speak with school administration with
questions or concerns.

|
Highland High School has been chosen by the state department of education to participate in the federally mandated National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP) test. This test provides the information which forms the Nation's Report Card. The test will be given to Seniors, randomly chosen, on Friday February 22, 2019. We will know who will participate, and parents and students will be notified in December 2018. For more information please review the NAEP website= https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/about/
CULTURE OF SAFETY
Our protocols for access to the school include the following:
- All exterior doors will remain locked during school hours, including the front doors.
- Access to the school will be granted by appointment or in cases of emergency.
- To check out a student a parent/guardian must call the school, who will verify the check out, and then the student may leave the school.
- Students who check in, must call the school to be allowed access to enter, and when granted access to the school, must check in at the attendance office.
- The school does not accept deliveries of any kind or any visitors unless approved by administration.
- If a parent/guardian wants to drop off an item a student forgot, the student will need to check-out and leave the school to get the item, and then check back in, note that attendance procedures will be followed.
- There will be a sign placed at the front entrance with instructions for gaining entry.
- All visitors must be prepared to present valid I.D.
- A member of the school’s staff will assist each visitor as soon as possible.
- Please be patient while you wait. Keep in mind that our staff may be assisting others inside the school, including tending to students in need, which is our first priority.
CULTURE OF CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT
The Highland Parent Advisory Group has been formed and will be meeting this Tuesday 10/16/18. Here is the agenda=
We are excited to work with parents on improving Highland High School.
CULTURE OF LEARNING
Highland High School is starting a program where teachers will be receiving instructional coaching based on the Visible Learning Mindframes we have been learning about from the latest educational research. Mr. Steve Morton, one of our assistant principals, will be providing this coaching to teachers. Our aim is to continually push students to new levels of learning and an instructional coach will benefit this objective.
FACILITIES & FINANCES
Highland is teaming up with Connections Credit Union to build a press box, concessions and bathroom facility at Iron Horse Stadium. The goal is to have this completed by the 2019-20 school year for fall activities and athletics. We are currently gathering estimates and we are in the design phase of the project. We appreciate the support of Connections Credit Union who does so much for our schools in our district.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Congratulations to the Pocatello Pioneers Mountain Bike Club who took 3rd in the state last weekend at Bogus Basin in Boise, ID. We are proud of our Highland students who are on this club! Great job. Pocatello is a Mountain Biking mecca with hundreds of miles of trails for beginning to elite riders. Participants in this active outdoor sport are growing all the time. If you are interested in joining up, please give Mr. Wallace a call and he will put in contact with the coaches.
Band is in the middle of their marching band season, heading to St. George soon to compete against schools from around the Rocky Mt. West.
Orchestra students have a concert coming up on Wednesday 10/24/18 in Highland's Main Gym. We are excited to see these students perform.
The PHC district swim team is back home in competition on Saturday 10/20/18 at Reeds Gym Pool.
Congratulations to Boys Soccer for a great season! We are excited to see where we go next year and we will miss our Seniors. Again, great job boys. We are proud of you!

Girls Soccer is headed to state, which will be held at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex Thursday October 18-Saturday October 20, 2018. We start with Rocky Mountain at 2pm on Thursday October 18th. Go Lady Rams!!

OTHER IMPORTANT EVENTS
Students 16 and older are able to participate in the Key Club Red Cross Blood Donation on Wednesday 10/17/18 held in Highland's lower gym during the school day.
Junior Civitan is sponsoring Sock-tober this month. Teachers have sock boxes. Students can bring socks to donate to their first hour
class. These socks will be distributed to various homeless shelters and
agencies, plus we hope to have some for the school district coat closet.
Remind the students that if they need NHS hours to check with Stephanie Plato
for more information.
Socks will be collected from classes on
Friday, October 19th.

On
Thursday and Friday of last week, the Counselors and the College and Career
advisors had an amazing opportunity to learn about and tour facilities in and
around our community as well as several programs at the College of Technology.
Over
the next few weeks, we will be sharing information about these opportunities
for our students in this blog.
The College of Technology at Idaho State
Univerity has a Cyber-Physical Security program that three of the counselors
were able to tour and spent time with an instructor.
It is the only program in the nation that
specializes in this area and
it is here in our backyard!
