HHS 10/16-10/24/17

Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,

Amazing week this past week and still more great things to come this week. We started off the week last week inducting 118 new members to the Highland National Honors Society. We are so proud of each of these students and their dedication to character, scholarship, leadership, and service. They truly model the belief that Right Attitude Means Success. 

 We also wanted to thank Tanner Gillman who completed his Eagle Project by remodeling the RAMTV set. He and his team of volunteers worked hard, cutting, building, carpeting, painting, staining, and more. Thank you Tanner Gillman and all those who helped with the project. 



Wednesday was a big day with a lot planned. We are proud of  our freshman who dedicated time to their 4-year academic plans and cleared and thistles and other weeds along the creek at the Portneuf Wellness Complex. We are proud of our Sophomores and Juniors who took the PSAT. We are  proud of our other Juniors and our Seniors who went to several different workshops on college applications, scholarships, apprenticeships, financial aid,  resumes and interviews. Also, we are proud of the Juniors and Seniors that visited ISU's campus.  It was a great day with a lot going on. A special thanks to the Highland staff for making everything run so smooth. 

On Friday, the Highland Varsity Football team beat Rigby 33-0 to clinch the number one spot in our district and guarantee a trip to the state football tournament. 

What an amazing week last week! We are so proud of all of our students and their efforts to constantly improve. This is the Highland definition of excellence=continual improvement.

This week great things are continuing to happen.  First, a reminder that Senior picture day will be on Tuesday of this week.  Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors have pictures this week on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Tuesday and Thursday Volleyball heads to Bonneville for the district tournament. On Wednesday Girls Soccer is going to Boise for the State Soccer Tournament and Cross Country will head to Madison for the district race.

On Thursday, Highland is excited to have an assembly celebrating senior Tommy Togiai for being picked among only approximately 50 high school student athletes across the country as an Army All-American. He will play in the High School Army All-American Football game broadcast on NBC on January 6, 2018. We are proud of you Tommy!  The bell schedule on Thursday is as follows=

This Wednesday, 10/18/17, there is a Southeast Idaho College Fair at Skyline High School in Idaho Falls from 5pm-8pm with more than 30 colleges, trade and tech schools, and the military represented. We encourage seniors to attend. 

Also, the College & Career Advisors in collaboration with Idaho State's College of Technology will begin Tech Thursday's. Each Thursday students will have the opportunity to explore different educational programs at Idaho State's College of Technology through hands-on experiences.  For example, this Thursday is Aviation-Aircraft Maintenance and Unmanned Aerial Systems. Students will be able to practice flying drones and will have other aviation related activities. We are excited for Tech Thursday's and the opportunities students have to explore potential colleges and careers. 
We are so proud of our students and we are proud to be Highland Rams!

LEARN HOW TO PLAN AND PREPARE FOR LIFE BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL



9th grade--FALL
Talk about your interests and goals for the future.
Connect with people such as your CCA or Counselor who can offer advice and help you make important decisions.
Start talking with your family about what you might want to do after graduation. Discuss your interests and the things you're good at. Talk to your friends about their goals and compare notes.

10th grade--FALL
Join an extracurricular activity.
If you haven’t found something to get involved with, now’s the time.
In addition to activities offered at your school, consider volunteering with a nonprofit organization in your community. You’ll learn valuable skills and hone in on how your interests might translate into a career. Don't forget, pursuing activities outside of the classroom will help with college applications and may even help you win scholarship money.

11th grade FALL
Talk to your school counselor (as often as you need to)
Regular, one-on-one conversations with a mentor will make all the difference.

Your counselor is there to make sure you get the answers you need as you begin to make your post-high school plans. Meet with the counselor and the CCA several times this year to discuss career paths and college or technical training options. Have specific questions prepared each time, so that you can walk away with usable information or specific tasks.

12th grade FALL
  • Check with the colleges about their financial aid application deadlines and ask colleges about scholarships you may qualify for.
  • Make sure you understand the different types of financial aid: grants, scholarships, and loans and how you can apply for each
  • Learn more about Idaho Opportunity Scholarship for Idaho high school students who plan to attend one of Idaho’s public institutions.
  • Use the Idaho Department of Labor’s Career Information System (CIS) to search for national and local scholarship opportunities
Make sure that you take advantage of the opportunities that both the CCAs and the Counselors offer!

INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS REGARDING TESTING

Reminder to students: when you take an exam such as the PSAT, SAT, ACT, ISAT 2.0 or AP it is best to leave your phone AT HOME. All four of these exams have policies that state that if the phone is accessed at any time during the exam(s) or if it makes noise (rings, incoming text, etc.), your score will be cancelled.  THERE IS NO POINT IN TAKING THE RISK.

Be sure and purchase your $2 Ticket or Tickets for the Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello Raffle benefiting Athletics and Activities.  Last year a Pocatello High School parent won a brand new Dodge Dart all expenses paid including taxes.  Over $56,000 was raised for school activities in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District in last years raffle.  Support athletics and activities again this year and buy raffle tickets for $2 for the chance to win a new Jeep Renegade worth $25,000 donated by Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can buy.  All expenses for the car are covered, including taxes.  All proceeds go to school athletics and activities.  Tickets are on sale until May 21, 2018 and the drawing will take place at the new Lithia Dealership in Pocatello on May 31, 2018.  Contact the school bursar to buy tickets (208)237-1300 and/or look to buy tickets and see the car on display at home events throughout the school year.
