Students are expected to be in each class, in their seat, on time, ready to learn, every day. Attendance is one of the most essential pieces in receiving an education and preparing students for future success in college and/or career. Not attending, or being late to class, results in missing valuable information and makes it extremely difficult for student learning to occur.
Students are expected to attend 90% of the time. Students who miss 10% or more of class time will be subject to school attendance disciplinary procedures.
A parent/guardian has 3 days to provide medical documentation to the school following a medical visit in order to verify the absence, otherwise the absence will remain coded as “absent.”
Student Absences at the Secondary Level
Students are allowed 5 unexcused absences in a trimester without a consequence. On a student's 6th unexcused absence they will receive a truancy. Additional truancies will be issued for continued unexcused absences.
Attendance reports are reviewed at least once a week at which time truancies, the assigned consequences, and notifications are distributed.
If a student is going to be absent for extenuating circumstances, please contact school administration in order to minimize the impact on the students education.
Students that are truant or suspended out of school may only make up work at the discretion of the teacher and/or an administrator.
Student Tardiness at the Secondary Level
Students who arrive late disrupt the learning environment of the classroom. Tardiness at the secondary level is a condition for which a student arrives less than 15 minutes after the start of class. Any student who is tardy beyond 15 minutes of class time may be reported as absent or truant. The Teacher and/or Attendance Clerk are responsible for monitoring and recording student tardiness. Beyond possible teacher consequences assigned for tardiness, every 5 tardies in a class period is considered a truancy.
Truancies and Assigned Consequences
Whether a student is found truant from a class or classes, has excessive absences leading to truancy, or has excessive tardies leading to truancy, the attendance issues will all be added together and result in the following consequences=
STEM Diploma Designation:
Students who are interested in applying for the STEM diploma designation can see the Registrar for an application. Applications must be completed and returned to the Registrar prior to May 1, 2023. All students who qualify for the STEM designation will receive a seal on their diploma, notation of designation on their final transcript, cords to wear at graduation and the opportunity to apply for a $3,000 scholarship.

Second FAFSA Night – Mark your calendar:
Thursday, February 2nd -- Library
One FAFSA Night is real good; two FAFSA Nights are even better. Students applying for scholarships, financial aid, and some student loans will need to complete the FAFSA (the Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Our second FAFSA Night at Highland will be Thursday, February 2nd, from 6 to 8 pm, in the Library. Food will be served. There will be school staff and ISU professionals there to help.

Both student and parent will establish an FSA ID that night (if they haven’t already).

STEM Diploma Scholarship for Seniors – Deadline is Feb. 1st !
Students in Idaho who earn a STEM Diploma are eligible to apply for one of ten, $3,000 scholarships provided they will be attending an Idaho public, post-secondary institution, including career technical schools, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The STEM Scholarships will be offered in the following fields: Advanced Manufacturing, Agriculture, Computer Science/Technology, Engineering, Food Sciences, Health Sciences, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and General STEM.
This scholarship requires a brief essay, two letters of recommendation, and the deadline is a hard one. If students want to apply for the STEM Scholarship, they need to start on it today

Scholarships – Idaho Schools & Next Steps
The best scholarship money for Highland graduates is first at the schools / colleges / programs to which students have been accepted. The CCAs are glad to help students navigate the financial aid or scholarship webpages at various schools. Most colleges need you to actively accept scholarships, so don’t hesitate to ask for assistance with the various processes. We don’t want you to miss out and lose money on the table.

submission dates have already passed. Please note:

Construction Combine -- Save the Date
The Construction Combine – an opportunity for high school students to get a primer on a variety of construction skills and gain more knowledge about the construction trades– will be back this spring in cooperation with ISU’s Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Training, local builders, tradespeople, and home improvement stores. At the conclusion of the two-day event, students also have the opportunity to be hired for summer work by local contractors.
An application will be available soon, and we will post a link to it on this blog. Students must be in good academic standing, must commit to the full two days of the Construction Combine in order to be school excused, be prepared with appropriate clothes and shoes, and agree to work professionally and cooperatively throughout the experience.
