Welcome to 2022!
Just a few items at the start of the new year.
Seniors
·
We
hope you have applied to
college or training programs, to apprenticeships, or to career technical
education, but if you haven’t, that is fine. You can apply to any of Idaho’s
state colleges or training programs on the Apply Idaho platform. Please stop by
and we will be glad to help.
·
FAFSA. Seems like we
mention this every time, but it’s important. You cannot be considered for
financial aid or scholarships without a processed FAFSA. We are glad to help
students and families complete this form – do not hesitate to call on us.
·
Planning to go
to ISU’s College of Technology? The College of Technology delivers
its programs through a cohort system, so in order to be sure that there is a
seat with your name on it, you have to call the College of Technology to
schedule an appointment with an academic advisor there and a tour of your
particular program by March 15th. Please call 208-282-2622 to
schedule your advising appointment soon.

Scholarships. In the fall,
students apply to colleges and training programs. In the first three or four
months of the new year, students apply to scholarships like it is their job –
which it is. Scholarships are not just for scholars (for the brains); they are
for any hard-working and worthy student who would like financial assistance to
make college and training. There is good money out there and we want to help
students find it. Visit the CCAs for some tips and guidance about scholarships.

Scholarships
2.0.
We encourage all students to write a boilerplate scholarship essay that they
save on GoogleDocs. Then that one essay can be adapted and revised for various
scholarship applications, many of which ask for a short essay. An essay of 250
to 500 words should be plenty. Some applications also ask for a letter of
recommendation and a resume, so seniors should have a recommender (or two) and
a resume ready to go.

Going on a
mission?
You will need to defer admission and scholarships. Every school or program has a
formal program for deferral. We can assist with your deferral.
· Workforce focused? Let us help you with job hunting, job interviews, your resume, preparation for all things in the workforce after high school.
All
Students
·
Juniors? You will take
the SATs in the spring, which will be paid for by the state. You can use your
Advanced Opportunities monies to pay for an ACT test later in the spring, the
summer, or early next fall. Some schools and colleges will award scholarships
based on GPA and standardized test scores.
·
Juniors 2.0. Think about
the schools, college, or training programs that might be right for you. Will
your summer plans allow you to tour and visit them? The time to think of that
is now.
· Resumes, voluntarism, shadowing. Want to investigate different work environments, parts of the country, careers? Let’s talk about how the summer months can help you tick off boxes that direct you toward a future that is attractive and attractively challenging.
We feel good about how much has been accomplished by our students – with much important help from the guidance counselors and teachers – but let’s keep our eyes on the prize . . . which is a bright future. From here on out, the school year will zip by, so stay connected to the college career advisors for help and guidance.
