Dear Highland Students & Families,
This will be last blurb from the college career advisors for 2021 – a year that was hard and remarkable in the college career arena. We are hopeful and encouraged by the level of engagement from all the students we meet, but particularly the work of our senior students who are seriously considering their futures after high school. We just want everyone to have choices in the spring and our seniors are showing us all the way. Here are some things to consider over the next month or so.

BYU Idaho => Application deadlines: Priority, 1 February 2022; Final application deadline: 1 September 2022. Decision notification: approximately two weeks after a completed application is received (admissions is rolling).
Have You Applied to College or Training?
It is NOT Too Late!
If you are a senior or an early grad and have not yet applied to college or training programs, it is not (at all) too late. We have tried to reach out to all our seniors, but if we missed you, please do come to us. We want to be sure that every seniors knows there is either a college program or a career technical / training program that will meet his or her needs. Or maybe you’ve considered a change of academic major or program after applying – please stop by. We are glad to help.
It is Now Scholarship Season
Between the first of December and early April, we want to strongly encourage all our seniors who have applied to college or training programs to seek out all the scholarships. Scholarships are not just for scholars – they are available to just about every student who has gotten to the senior year and who are focused on careers and training. The state of Idaho has a number of Opportunity Scholarships, employers of parents or guardians often offer scholarships to the children of employees, there are local scholarships, and there are national / competitive scholarships. Please let the CCAs be helpful to you in this project. We recommend that seniors start a scholarship spreadsheet and write a boilerplate scholarship essay that can be adapted and revised for just about any essay prompts.
There is lots of scholarship money out there. Don’t leave it on the table.
Submit New Transcript for Scholarship
Purposes
Seniors, if you applied to colleges or training programs in October or November and your GPA came up after the first trimester, RE-submit your transcripts to show your latest grades and cumulative GPA. This one easy move could earn you more scholarship money.
FAFSA
Remember seniors: you cannot be considered for financial aid or scholarships without submitting your FAFSA. The college career advisors are glad to help you (the senior) and his or her family get the FAFSA done. The first time can be glitchy and can seem daunting. We offer a table to sit at and a shoulder to sigh on. People often ask what the FAFSA deadline is. Well, you can submit a FAFSA two days before your college experience begins, but you will have missed out on financial aid. Try to get your FAFSA submitted early in 2022, before you file taxes for 2021 and before you get your W-2s.
After you submit your FAFSA, you will get an email to confirm that. When your FAFSA has been processed, you will receive another email confirming it has been processed.

Advanced Opportunities
Just a friendly reminder that every Idaho student has access to $4,125 in Advanced Opportunities monies that can be spent on professional certification exams, training programs, dual-enrollment classes and credit, Advanced Placement exams, one college entrance exam, and much much more. These monies help students find their gifts and their purpose, and can help them prepare for the rigors of college and training. See the college career advisors to learn more.
Finally, a word of gratitude to all our colleagues – teachers, staff, facilities and food service personnel, and administration – who have been friends and collaborators during a very challenging time. Our co-workers at Highland have stayed student-centered, which bodes well for a successful second half of the school year.
