IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,
National Honors Society (NHS) is our largest club at Highland High School. Last year we had 121 inductees and a total membership of 350 students. Mrs. Stefanie Plato, platost@sd25.us, is the advisor. Students in National Honors Society are recognized at graduation with Honors, High Honors or Highest Honors. Membership in NHS will be based
on scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students may receive an invitation to join during their sophomore or junior year. Exceptions will be evaluated by the building administration.
Students are eligible for membership in National Honor Society if:

- Their cumulative grade point average is at least
- 3.6-3.79 (Honors),
- 3.8-4.0 (High Honors);
- 4.0 and higher, with at least 2 AP courses completed (Highest Honors)
- Their citizenship is satisfactory and they have demonstrated service and leadership;
- Their courses taken during high school include=
- If graduating in 2020:
- At least 8 credits of English
- At least 7 credits of Math and must include Algebra 2
- At least 6 credits of Science
- If graduating in 2021 and beyond:
- At least 8 credits of English
- At least 8 credits of Math including Integrated Math III
- At least 6 credits of Science
- In addition to these base requirements students must choose at least 1 specific track of study. The requirements for each track include:
- English Track=At Least 12 credits
- Honors English 9, 10, 11 AP Lit & Comp or Eng 101/110 and 4 credits of the same World Language or 4 credits of debate.
- Math & Science Track=At Least 14 credits of Math & Science combined (if graduating 2020)
- 2 credits of Honors Math or 2 credits of Honors Science
- 1 credit of Honors Math and 1 Credit of Honors Science
- 2 of the 14 credits must include:
- 2 Credits of Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy & Physiology, or 3 credits of AP Biology or any dual credit science course.
- Math & Science Track=16 credits of Math & Science Combined (if graduating 2021 & beyond)
- 3 credits of Honors Math ,3 credits of Honors Science, or 3 credits of a combination of Honors Math and Honors Science.
- 2 of the 16 credits must include:
- 2 credits of Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy & Physiology, or 3 credits of AP Biology or any dual credit science course.
- World Languages Track=At Least 8 credits
- 6 credits in the same World Language and 2 credits of World History, or 3 credits of AP World History, or 8 credits in the same World Language.
- Fine Arts Track=At Least 10 credits
- 8 credits of Art, Drama, Dance, or Music.
- 4 credits and no more than 6 credits in one Fine Arts area.
- 2 credits of the most advanced class offered in the school district in the chosen Fine Arts area. If AP Art, then 3 credits.
- 2 credits of World History or 3 credits of AP World History.
- Social Studies Track=At Least 8 credits
- 2 credits of 9th Grade U.S. History
- 3 credits of AP U.S. History
- 2 or 3 credits of AP Government
- 2 credits of World History or 3 credits of AP World History
- Career Technical Education Track=At Least 8 Credits (Machining and Welding do not count)=
- A student must complete a program of study including the capstone course or courses.
- For programs with fewer than 8 credits, students must enroll in additional career technical courses in a related area, if available. If a related career technical area is not available within the school, a second program of study must be selected.
In addition to the academic rigor, students must complete twelve (12) hours of service each year; six (6) community service hours and six (6) school related hours. Hours must be reported to advisors each trimester. Hours required for Activities/Athletics are not included as NHS service hours.

The Highland Foundation is dedicated to raising money to benefit Highland High School. For example, two years ago the Highland Foundation was able to refurnish the school library from funds that were donated through the foundation, bringing it up to date and making it a powerful resource for the school. There are some benefits you can recieve from donating money to the Highland Foundation. One benefit is that you are helping improve Highland High school. Also, there are a couple of tax benefits. Your donation(s) can be written off as an itemized deduction on your Federal Taxes. In addition, there is a specialized tax rebate that can be applied to State Taxes for donations to a non-profit/public school entity allowing for up to 1/2 back.
The foundation has been working to find ways that make it easier for you to give to Highland High School. The first step in this process is establishing a Venmo account. Venmo is an app that can be downloaded to your phone and facilitates the transfer of money from one to another. Once set up, it literally takes just seconds. The Highland Foundation bank account is attached to its newly established Venmo account allowing for donations to go directly to the account. The account handle name is @HighlandFoundation, you will see Melissa Nielsen's name (the school librarian) as she is the treasurer for the Highland Foundation. You can donate up to $2,999 in one transaction. Please type in where you want this money to be donated (English, Math, Wrestling, Football, Library, Etc). If you do not specify where then it will automatically be assigned to the general account and will not be earmarked for a specific area.
