All seniors who plan on
continuing their education with a higher learning institute should request
their final high school transcript before their last day of school on (5/24/19) with the
Registrar at Highland High School. Before they can request their final transcript, their fees must be paid in full.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------After some discussion we are not going to offer the wearing of cords beyond Highest Honors, High Honors, Honors, National Speech and Debate, and Youth in Government for this school year. Meeting and discussing the wearing of cords with the other high school principals and district office administration, we decided we need more time to develop criteria for achievement of cords and what cords to offer and to align this across all 3 high schools. We would like to offer the same cords at all the high schools and figuring this out will take more time that won't be accomplished by this years graduation. We appreciate your understanding and we are excited to celebrate with our graduates. Please contact school administration with questions or concerns.
Another tradition we are starting is modifying the Senior Assembly. We invite all graduates and their families to come the our Senior Assembly Celebration on 5/20/19 at 9:20am-10:25am. After the assembly families and their graduates can meet in the lower gym to take pictures, mingle and celebrate with some light refreshments. Please plan on coming and honoring our graduates with us. Thank you Mrs. Clarkson for all your hard work on this!

Celebrating
Highland’s
Seniors
Highland High Senior Celebration Day is an inaugural event, held
on the morning of May 20th, in recognition of the hard work and commitment of
our 2019 graduates. An all-school event that will acknowledge the next steps of
every graduate, Senior Celebration Day has as its goals:
1) to encourage seniors to finish their spring trimester strong
2) to honor seniors completing high school and heading on to
careers, college, mission, military service, or other experiences
3) to applaud the families, faculty, staff, and others who have
supported seniors, Highland students and graduates.
The event begins at 9:15 a.m. in the Main Gym. Afterward, seniors,
their families and supporters can gather for light refreshments and photos.
Senior Celebration is a bit like graduation, but less formal. Seniors are
invited to wear their caps and gowns and may sit with their friends. We hope
every senior, particularly the early
grads, and their supporters will attend.

we are on the subject of seniors, if your senior is going directly on to
career / technical training, military service, or 2- or 4-year college, it
is VERY important for each senior to inform Highland’s Registrar (Elaine
Whitehead) where to send his or her final
academic transcript.
Unfortunately, in
Idaho, May is the month with the most completed suicides. The good news is that
there is support and help available day or night with trained, confidential
professionals.
We care about our
students and their families so if someone is in need of help please contact one

Ideas of Activities to Help 10th
and 11th Graders with College Applications, Scholarships &
Career Choices
1)
Start SAT
and/or ACT test prep--SAT prep can be accessed through utilizing the
student’s PSAT scores, creating a CollegeBoard account and linking through that
account to KAHN Academy. Counselors have
free ACT prep booklets that students are welcome to come and pick up. We would
love to see them and answer any questions.
2) Volunteer—Colleges and
Scholarship committees like to see commitment and continuousness when it comes
to student volunteers.
3) Apply
for Internships—If your student is interested in working with a
certain company or gaining working knowledge of a field, have him/her look into
internship programs offered by business. For example, INL has internship
opportunities for our students.
4) Job
Shadow—Summer is the perfect time to job shadow in an area
of interest. This allows the student to decide if he/she wishes to continue
courses, towards the career, at HHS or try something new.
5) Create
a Project—Use the summer to be creative. Start a garage band,
take art classes, write….
6) Schedule
College Visits—It is nice to visit colleges while school is in
session to get a good idea of what the campus is like, but if that is not an
option for you, college schedule group and individual tours throughout summer.

Board
of Education Launches a “It’s Not Too Late” Campaign (nextsteps.idaho.gov)
Each year many young adults wonder, “Is it too
late for me to attend college?” The answer is, “It’s not too late!” Started in late April, the State Board
of Education reached out to current seniors who have not used Apply Idaho to
complete a college application and last year’s high school graduates who are
not enrolled at a postsecondary institution. Both of these groups received a
postcard with helpful resources on the Board’s It’s Not Too
Late campaign.
State Board Staff will be following up with these individuals to provide them with links and resources to help guide their final steps towards becoming a full or part time college student come fall. A targeted It’s Not Too Late social media campaign has also been launched to support these efforts and is set to end June 15. Nearly 2,000 more students have completed the FAFSA than last year. Now, the task for all of us is to ensure they arrive on campus this fall.

1. Students will need a
College Board account to view their scores.
3. Click sign up to
register for an account if they don’t already have one.
Matching College
Board Student Accounts and Registration
If a student is
signed into his/her College Board account but does not see scores, it means we
were not able to link their score report and account automatically. For
security reasons, a student must verify additional information before we can
display scores. The student will need either his/her SAT registration
number or the Student ID number the student was pre-identified with by the
school or district.
To match, the
student will:

3. Review the personal information.
4. If any information is incorrect, click Update to revise.
(Students will be prompted to re-enter their password.)
5. If the information is correct, click Get My Scores.
6. The student will have to select one of the following options:
a. I can supply my test information (test date and registration
number*)
OR
b. I can supply my student ID (using the student ID the student was
pre-identified with)
c. Click Get My Scores.
If your student plans to take
classes next year for dual credit through Idaho State University, please be
sure he or she has completed and submitted an Early College Program (ECP)
application. Step-by- step directions are available at the Early College
website. The student only has to do this once, so if your student is planning
on ISU dual enrollment for the first time, please be sure to have him or her
get this done. Go to this URL:
Students
who plan to take a math or science class for dual credit need to take a
standardized math assessment, the ALEKS test or qualifying math SAT score, in
order to register for some dual enrollment classes (the ALEKS test is not
needed for English, history, or social science classes).

We are offering the ALEKS test after school on Monday, May 20th. We
will be meeting in the library immediately after school, about 2:45 p.m.

Before students sit for the ALEKS test, we want them to have completed their
Early College application, we hope they will have slept well the night before,
eat a good lunch so their stomachs are not growling, and do some preparation by
reviewing math material and learning strategies for taking online math
assessments.
~
Your help and cooperation will be greatly appreciated as we have hundreds of
students who need ALEKS testing before they can earn dual enrollment.
If your
student is not able to sit for ALEKS testing before school dismisses for the
summer, we will be offering ALEKS testing on schedule pick-up days in August.
Watch your e-mail or school text reminders. Reaching the appropriate ALEKS
score, or qualifying math SAT score, is required for the dual enrollment class
types listed above. SAT scores can be found on a student’s College Board
account or will be uploaded to transcripts at the very end of this month.
A
number of students indicated interest in taking on-campus ISU classes this summer or fall 2019. There is
special paperwork for on-campus classes. The summer session for Early College
begins June 10th and the on-campus fall semester begins August 19th.
All the pieces and paperwork need to be in place by mid-May for students to
take on-campus classes summer or fall.
Through
these and other efforts, we are trying to avoid classroom disruption and have a
seamless start of school in August. Your help is appreciated by everyone: your
students, teachers, staff here and at ISU, and all those who support students
and educators.

REMINDERS
Summer School dates are set. First Session: June 11-July 3. Second Session: July 8-July 30. All students who need to make up credits will need to register with their school counselor before the end of the school year (May 31st). Summer school will be held at the New Horizon Center.
Starting in the 2019-2020 school year, in order to be in compliance with Idaho education law, the Pocatello/Chubbuck School district will be changing the way they issue credit for dual enrollment courses. Dual enrollment courses are courses in which a student can earn college credit while still in high school. In the past, each dual enrollment course taken would account for one high school credit, regardless of the corresponding credit level at the institution of higher learning. For example, a student taking English 101, a three (3) credit course at ISU, would receive one (1) high school credit on their high school transcript.. However, the law now requires that students receive high school credit at a ratio of at least 2:1 for dual enrollment courses. As such, the same English 101 course will now equate to one and a half (1.5) high school credits on the high school transcript. Likewise, if a student takes a dual enrollment course with a college credit value of four (4) credits, the student will receive two (2) high school credits. The Highland Foundation is dedicated to raising money to benefit Highland High School. For example, last school year the Highland Foundation was able to remodel the school library from funds that were donated through the foundation, bringing it up to date and making it a powerful resource for the school. There are some benefits you can recieve from donating money to the Highland Foundation. One benefit is that you are helping improve Highland High school. Also, there are a couple of tax benefits. Your donation(s) can be written off as an itemized deduction on your Federal Taxes. In addition, there is a specialized tax rebate that can be applied to State Taxes for donations to a non-profit/public school entity allowing for up to 1/2 back.
The foundation has been working to find ways that make it easier for you to give to Highland High School. The first step in this process is establishing a Venmo account. Venmo is an app that can be downloaded to your phone and facilitates the transfer of money from one to another. Once set up, it literally takes just seconds. The Highland Foundation bank account is attached to its newly established Venmo account allowing for donations to go directly to the account. The account handle name is @HighlandFoundation, you will see Melissa Nielsen's name (the school librarian) as she is the treasurer for the Highland Foundation. You can donate up to $2,999 in one transaction. Please type in where you want this money to be donated (English, Math, Wrestling, Football, Library, Etc). If you do not specify where then it will automatically be assigned to the general account and will not be earmarked for a specific area.
