COUNSELOR'S/COLLEGE & CAREER ADVISORS
March 7th Junior students will have the opportunity to meet with and learn more about the various colleges around Idaho at Higher Education Day. The morning will consist of three different breakout sessions where students will choose which college they would like to learn more about. The college’s in attendance for the day will be: Boise State University, Brigham Young University-Idaho, College of Southern Idaho, College of Eastern Idaho, Idaho State University, Lewis-Clark State College, University of Idaho. We will also have the Marines, Army, Navy, and National Guard present to meet with students.

Registration materials for the upcoming year were distributed in TA/Homeroom today. Please ask your student about this information. Counselors were in 9th and 10th grade math courses and in 11th grade English courses reviewing the Academic Planning process and discussing new features with students the past two weeks. Your student(s) will have an extended TA/Homeroom on both March 4th and March 11th to continue to work on and finish planning for next year. Please review this process as well as their class choices with them. Their Academic Planner can be accessed through their Infinite Campus account.
This month’s Sexual Harassment presentation was given in TA/Home room. Thank you to RAM TV and the students who created the videos that were shown. Please contact Cali Baker in the Counseling Center if you have any questions.
Freshmen Parents:
- Your student has the opportunity to go to the College of Southern Idaho’s Ropes/Challenge Course on April 9th. If your learner is interested, please have them sign up with their TA instructor so they can obtain the required risk, release, & field trip forms which will need to be filled out by parents/guardians. Students will have to pay $10 to go on the team building trip, which can be paid to the bursar.

Sophomore/Junior Parents:
- ALEKS Testing for sophomores/juniors planning on taking Math/Science dual enrollment courses in Fall 2019. The testing times will be April 22nd, May 6th, and May 20th after school at 2:45 in the media center. Please encourage your student to sign up to take this test so they can be eligible for the dual enrollment course in the fall. Math/Science courses require a certain SAT score to be eligible to take the course, the ALEKS gives those students who do not score high enough to take the courses as well. Senior Parents:
- Senior students who are planning on attending Idaho State University in the fall make sure to sign up for their Early Registration Event April 2nd – 5th! This gives the incoming first year students the opportunity to sign up for classes before the upperclassmen. Early Registration event information can be found at www.isu.edu/earlyreg
- Make sure your students are keeping an eye on their emails, some colleges require students to log into their specific portal to start financial aid work/scholarship info etc.
- If you or your student need help with FAFSA we are more than happy to walk you through the process, it’s very important to get this step done so that your student can be eligible for various scholarships.

SAT Rapid Review--Multiple sessions are offered between March 2 and March 7. Please feel free to share this opportunity for a free, expert-led SAT review for students and families.

The Highland Foundation is dedicated to raising money to benefit Highland High School. For example, last school year the Highland Foundation was able to remodel the school library from funds that were donated through the foundation, bringing it up to date and making it a powerful resource for the school. There are some benefits you can recieve from donating money to the Highland Foundation. One benefit is that you are helping improve Highland High school. Also, there are a couple of tax benefits. Your donation(s) can be written off as an itemized deduction on your Federal Taxes. In addition, there is a specialized tax rebate that can be applied to State Taxes for donations to a non-profit/public school entity allowing for up to 1/2 back.
The foundation has been working to find ways that make it easier for you to give to Highland High School. The first step in this process is establishing a Venmo account. Venmo is an app that can be downloaded to your phone and facilitates the transfer of money from one to another. Once set up, it literally takes just seconds. The Highland Foundation bank account is attached to its newly established Venmo account allowing for donations to go directly to the account. The account handle name is @HighlandFoundation, you will see Melissa Nielsen's name (the school librarian) as she is the treasurer for the Highland Foundation. You can donate up to $2,999 in one transaction. Please type in where you want this money to be donated (English, Math, Wrestling, Football, Library, Etc). If you do not specify where then it will automatically be assigned to the general account and will not be earmarked for a specific area.

The Idaho Legislature recently passed a bill allowing for a STEM designation to be included on a student’s high school diploma. Students who successfully complete all graduation requirements established by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District may receive a high school diploma designated as a STEM diploma if they meet the following criteria:
· Complete eight (8) credits in mathematics
· Complete eight (8) credits in science
· Complete five (5) additional credits of the student’s choice in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.
Students who are interested in applying for the STEM diploma designation can see their counselor for an application. Applications must be completed and returned to the school registrar prior to May 1, 2019.
