We want to take time to recognize Paige Rasmussen who was chosen by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the United States Department of Education for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. She was selected for her outstanding performance on the ACT and SAT exams. Details on this prestigious program are found at http://www.ed.gov/psp. Congratulations to Paige Rasmussen and thank you for aiming high and working hard, exemplifying the Highland RAM Attitudes.
Reminder to parents/guardians, students, and community members that we will not be allowing any deliveries for Valentine's Day at Highland High School as part of our Safe Schools initiative. In the past our secretaries spent an entire day receiving, organizing, and making sure the right student received the right package. Beyond losing a day of work, the bigger picture and concern is the safety of our students. It is impossible to ensure safety at the school with so many deliveries occurring on a day like Valentine's Day. As a result, we will not be accepting any deliveries. Sorry for any inconvenience. Please contact school administration with any concerns.

Highland Student Government is working hard to put together our Make-A-Wish events for this year. Every year, Highland teams up with Make-A-Wish to sponsor someone from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The money of each of the events goes straight to Make-A-Wish, given in a check at an assembly to the individual being sponsored. The events of this year include Highland Idol, Hoky, Poky Dance of the Century (a dance for all 3 high schools), The Ram Run ( A Spartan Style race sponsored by the National Guard), a teacher talent show, and more. An entire list of events and costs will be provided in next weeks newsletter.

Last night our Choir and Orchestra students combined for an unforgettable musical performance at Highland High School's Main Gym. It was great to see these students perform.
Highland Band will be holding their annual potato bar fundraiser on 6pm Monday 2/25/19 @ Highland Cafeteria
Drama will be putting on their spring show starting 2/20-2/23/19 @ Highland Auditorium.
The dates for summer camps are set for both high school students and for community youth camps.

We are wrapping up winter activities with Girls State Basketball. Their first game is this Thursday at the Ford Center in Nampa, ID. The bracket is provided here=

Boys Basketball starts their district tournament tomorrow at Madison High School and will play again on Thursday either at Rigby or Thunder Ridge depending on the outcome of Tuesday's games. Wrestling will compete in their district tournament on Wednesday at Madison High School. Cheer and Dance competed in districts this past weekend and speech and debate are heading into districts over the next couple of weeks.
Spring sports, as crazy as it sounds because of weather, starts February 22nd for Track & Field, Tennis, Baseball and Softball. Next week tryouts for baseball and softball begin. Track & Field are practicing now to compete in the Simplot Games Thursday 2/14-Saturday 2/16 at the Holt Arena=https://simplotgames.com

What is CTE?
Career and technical education, or CTE, is education that directly prepares students for high-wage, high-demand careers. CTE covers many different fields, including health care, information technology, advanced manufacturing, hospitality and management and many more, as described in the national Career Clusters® and ACTE’s What is CTE? page and Sector Sheets. CTE encompasses many different types of education, from classroom learning to certification programs to work-based learning opportunities outside the classroom.
What is CTE Month?
Career and Technical Education Month®, or CTE Month®, is a public awareness campaign that takes place each February to celebrate the value of CTE and the achievements and accomplishments of CTE programs across the country. (https://www.acteonline.org/why-cte/cte-awareness/cte-month/)

Academic Planning Information
The counselors will be going into math and English classrooms this week and next week to help familiarize students on the academic planning process so they can complete their planning with their parents/guardians and in future TA. More planning materials (directions on how to navigate the Academic Planner, important information about classes, Humanities list, etc.) will be given to students in extended TA meetings in early March. Students that are not currently in math or English classes will be pulled from class and given the same information in a group setting.
PSAT information
Unfortunately, there were unforeseen issues locating HHS’ PSAT score reports. Now that we have them, we will disseminate students’ testing booklets and score reports on Monday, February 11, in 10th grade TA classes. Not all juniors chose to take the exam, so their testing booklets will be available in the Counseling Center Conference room during lunch on that same day, February 11. We encourage all juniors, that tested, and their parents to view the same video as the sophomores. All testers should remember that since they took the exam early in the school year, they may not have learned all of the material that they were tested on. As our students continue their sophomore and junior year, they will be receive more information in English and math relevant to the PSAT and SAT.

REMINDER
The Highland Foundation is dedicated to raising money to benefit Highland High School. For example, last school year the Highland Foundation was able to remodel the school library from funds that were donated through the foundation, bringing it up to date and making it a powerful resource for the school. There are some benefits you can recieve from donating money to the Highland Foundation. One benefit is that you are helping improve Highland High school. Also, there are a couple of tax benefits. Your donation(s) can be written off as an itemized deduction on your Federal Taxes. In addition, there is a specialized tax rebate that can be applied to State Taxes for donations to a non-profit/public school entity allowing for up to 1/2 back.
The foundation has been working to find ways that make it easier for you to give to Highland High School. The first step in this process is establishing a Venmo account. Venmo is an app that can be downloaded to your phone and facilitates the transfer of money from one to another. Once set up, it literally takes just seconds. The Highland Foundation bank account is attached to its newly established Venmo account allowing for donations to go directly to the account. The account handle name is @HighlandFoundation, you will see Melissa Nielsen's name (the school librarian) as she is the treasurer for the Highland Foundation. You can donate up to $2,999 in one transaction. Please type in where you want this money to be donated (English, Math, Wrestling, Football, Library, Etc). If you do not specify where then it will automatically be assigned to the general account and will not be earmarked for a specific area.

The Idaho Legislature recently passed a bill allowing for a STEM designation to be included on a student’s high school diploma. Students who successfully complete all graduation requirements established by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District may receive a high school diploma designated as a STEM diploma if they meet the following criteria:
· Complete eight (8) credits in mathematics
· Complete eight (8) credits in science
· Complete five (5) additional credits of the student’s choice in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.
Students who are interested in applying for the STEM diploma designation can see their counselor for an application. Applications must be completed and returned to the school registrar prior to May 1, 2019.
