IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Over the past couple of years we have been seeing an increase of sexual issues at Highland High School. This includes the taking, sending, viewing and sharing of nude "selfie" pictures via social media or text. Also, an increase in inappropriate comments, inappropriate sexual activity on campus, and sexual harassment or assault. In our investigations we have found that these incidents almost always seem to be traced back to the use of pornography.

Your Future Week – Next Week!
Planning
and preparations are in the final stages for Highland High School’s inaugural
Career / College Week, starting October 29th and running through
November 2nd. Though the focus is on our senior students and those
who will graduate by June of 2019, the week’s activities and energy will be
beneficial to all Highland students and will, hopefully, get them thinking
about what their futures hold -- what will give them satisfaction and security
throughout their working lives.
On
Monday,
October 29th: ISU’s Bengal Bridge
Program will be here to describe what it offers in assisting students to make a
successful full-time transition to college or technical training / education.
Tuesday,
October 30th, from 10 a.m. to 12
noon: Career /College advisors and counselors will host a Career Fair, open to
sophomores, juniors, and seniors, which will offer representatives from local
and regional industry, the armed forces, Idaho National Laboratory, Iron and
Electrical apprenticeships and ISU’s College of Technology (computer
technology, unmanned aerial systems, aircraft maintenance, surveying,
cyber-security, medical assisting), among others.
Wednesday,
October 31st: college / career
advisors, school counselors, and other staff will assist qualified senior
students in completing at least one Apply Idaho application, a one-stop website
and service (https://apply.nextsteps.idaho.gov/
) for students to apply to all of Idaho’s public colleges and universities at
no cost. Students will need an e-mail address they regularly check and monitor
and their EDUID number. Halloween will be more than candy and costumes as we
work with students considering technical education and training, professional
certificate programs, or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree to complete one
Idaho application.
Thursday
& Friday, November 1st and 2nd:
Staff will follow up with students to answer their questions, provide guidance,
point them toward resources and people, and brainstorm essay ideas for
applications and scholarships.
Take the opportunity
to talk with your Highland student(s) about next week and encourage them to
think and reflect about what lies ahead – academics, work after school and
during summers, interests and activities, their gifts and talents.
Experience
ISU Even before Career /
College Week, the career/college advisors will be taking about 15 students to
Idaho State for an organized enrollment event called “Experience ISU.” We are
fortunate indeed to have a highly respected regional university in our
backyard, which provides the full range of educational options: doctoral degrees
to technical education. If your student has interests that range from aircraft
maintenance to biochemistry, please encourage him or her to join us. Students
will meet with ISU representatives in their area(s) of interest.
Scholarship

Your
senior student should have received a Direct Admission letter from the State
Board of Education that indicates which Idaho public colleges and universities
he or she is admissible to. In Idaho, a high school senior can choose
post-secondary educational options ranging from health professions certificate
programs to academic bachelor’s degree programs. Any of these pursuits are
matched to scholarships for students who seek and apply to them. We encourage
all families to check out the following websites, make a list of scholarships
of interest, and set deadlines for submitting scholarship applications in
advance of the final scholarship deadlines:

The
two websites below offer a consolidation service to make scholarship
applications in one place rather than multiples. There are other such websites
listed at the end of the local scholarship webpage.
As a continuation of the training and tours that the
counselors and college/career advisors received on Oct. 11&12, we will look
at a company located here in Pocatello.
PETERSEN INCORPORATED is located near the Pocatello Airport
with their corporate facility residing in Ogden, Utah. They offer
manufacturing, precision machining, field services, design engineering and
warehousing/distribution. They work for a number of companies including
Lockheed Martin, Flying-J, Universal Studios, Disney, Boeing, Chevron and others.
At the time we toured the facility, they were creating projects for the
government, columns for rollercoasters and jet bridges/jetways. One of the main
reasons we chose to highlight PETERSEN INCOMPORTATED is due to the positions
they employee including Welders/Fitters and Machinists. At HHS, we offer
welding courses that prepare our students to transition to the College of Technology
to continue their education in the Welding program and SD#25 has several
students attending the Machining Program also at the College of
Technology. For these students, these
opportunities could help them be employable with continued training/experience
as soon as a year after finishing high school.

CULTURE OF SAFETY
Our protocols for access to the school include the following:
- All exterior doors will remain locked during school hours, including the front doors.
- Access to the school will be granted by appointment or in cases of emergency.
- To check out a student a parent/guardian must call the school, who will verify the check out, and then the student may leave the school.
- Students who check in, must call the school to be allowed access to enter, and when granted access to the school, must check in at the attendance office.
- The school does not accept deliveries of any kind or any visitors unless approved by administration.
- If a parent/guardian wants to drop off an item a student forgot, the student will need to check-out and leave the school to get the item, and then check back in, note that attendance procedures will be followed.
- There will be a sign placed at the front entrance with instructions for gaining entry.
- All visitors must be prepared to present valid I.D.
- A member of the school’s staff will assist each visitor as soon as possible.
- Please be patient while you wait. Keep in mind that our staff may be assisting others inside the school, including tending to students in need, which is our first priority.

CULTURE OF LEARNING
Highland High School will be having Russ Davies come and speak to our staff in a professional development on 10/29/18. Mr. Davies runs a non-profit called Professional Transformation Sports Development (PTSD) that is connected to the book study we are doing this school year from the book No Barriers.

A reminder that first trimester finals will occur on Monday November 19th and Tuesday November 20th, 2018.
After meeting with administration from the different high schools, and the district office, the following has been decided regarding finals.
Students will not, under any circumstances, be able to take finals earlier than the dates assigned.
We understand that there will be extenuating circumstances due to medical, legal or other events that infringe on this time that cannot be controlled or determined. As a result, students who may be gone during any of their finals have the first week of school after finals, until November 30th, 2018, to make up what they have missed. This time must be setup by the student with the teacher of the class of the final the student missed. Teachers are required to submit grades for the first trimester by November 26th, 2018. As a result, students who miss their finals will be recorded as having a score of 0 on their final. After the student makes up the final they have missed a grade change will be submitted.
Reminder to students and parents that the expectation for finals is that students will remain in class during finals and will not be able to checkout during class time. This time has been reserved for students to complete finals and will be protected as such. This will minimize distractions and create the best possible environment for assessment. All the high schools in the district seek academic excellence and creating an appropriate environment for assessment is essential in helping students perform at their best.
The question then becomes, "Can I check my student out during finals?" The answer is, not during class time. If there is an emergency then school administration will determine how to respond and will work with those involved. Dental appointments or other doctor appointments do not count as emergencies and the school expectation is that these appointments will need to be rescheduled when they do not infringe on the time dedicated for finals. Please call the school and speak with school administration with questions or concerns.

Highland High School has been chosen by the state department of education to participate in the federally mandated National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP) test. This test provides the information which forms the Nation's Report Card. The test will be given to Seniors, randomly chosen, on Friday February 22, 2019. FACILITIES & FINANCES
Highland is teaming up with Connections Credit Union to build a press box, concessions and bathroom facility at Iron Horse Stadium. The goal is to have this completed by the 2019-20 school year for fall activities and athletics. We are currently gathering estimates and we are in the design phase of the project. We appreciate the support of Connections Credit Union who does so much for our schools in our district.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
National Honor Society inducted 121 members. We currently have a total membership of approximately 350 students. We are proud of so many students dedicated to their academics.
Orchestra students have a concert coming up on Wednesday 10/24/18 in Highland's Main Gym. We are excited to see these students perform.
Band took 3rd place in their last competition. We are proud of their amazing show this year. This week they are headed to compete in St. George, UT. Good luck!
The PHC district swim team competes at districts on Friday 10/26/18 @ the Idaho Falls Aquatic Center.
Congratulations to Lauren Benson, Elana Sanford, and Jared Harden going to state to represent Highland and compete in Cross Country all the way in Lewiston. State Cross Country will take place on 10/27/18.
Football finished their regular season this Friday as district champs and has a bye the first round of the state playoffs.
