The school year has started off well and we are excited about where we are going. Our fall extra-curricular's are in full swing and it is fun to see students develop their talents in so many different areas and represent Highland with excellence. This Thursday 9/6/18 will be the opening game on Iron Horse Stadium's Football Field. The Freshman football team will start off at 4:30pm and JV will play under the newly installed lights at 6:30pm. At Highland High School, we align with district policy regarding attendance for our students. Our hope is that students will take their academic attendance seriously as missing school routinely, or habitually, will cause major gaps in learning and make it difficult to progress. Our attendance interventions and procedures are as follows=
HHS Attendance Intervention
Students are expected to be in each class, in
their seat, on time, ready to learn, everyday. Attendance is one of the
most essential pieces in receiving an education and preparing students for
future success in college and/or career. Not attending, or being late to class,
results in missing valuable information and makes it extremely difficult for
student learning to occur.
A student is allowed 6 absences in a class in a
trimester. 7 or more absences in a class in a trimester and the
student may receive truancies. A student is allowed 4
tardies in a class in a trimester. 5 or more tardies in a class in a
trimester and the student may receive truancies.
Even though tracking of attendance starts over
each trimester, truancies received accumulate through high school and do not
start over each trimester.
School assignments, assessments, instruction, or
any other school work missed while a student is truant cannot be made up. Every
absence (other than School Excused absences) beyond 6 in a class, in a
trimester, and a student is considered truant and will not be able to make up
the school work missed for time truant.
There are 3 types of absences a student
can have-School Excused, Verified, and Unverified.
Makeup of learning opportunities for days/time
missed=
Students will be expected to make up learning
opportunities missed as a result of absences, with the exception of truant
students. Time allowed for this is based on the number of days the student
was absent for circumstances plus one more school day. Teachers do have the
discretion to extend the number of days allowed on a case-by-case basis. Make
up work should be completed outside of instructional time.
School Excused
absences never count against a student's attendance and are those authorized by
school administration. Unfortunately, college visits set up by
individuals, and not the school, do not count as school excused.
Suspensions
Work will be provided for students who are
placed in In-School Suspension. Providing work for students who are placed in
Out of School Suspension is at the discretion of the each of the students teachers.
In and Out of School Suspensions are considered school excused. In School
Suspension students will receive absences and possibly truancies if they do not
attend as assigned.
There are 3 types of Verified
absences-documented, undocumented, and pre-arranged.
Verified-Documented absences require documentation and usually will not count against
a student's attendance. If verified-documented absences become excessive
and impact learning, as determined by school administration, they may count
against a student's attendance.
Parents/Guardians will be notified in these
instances.
Verified-Documented absences include:
- Legal-documentation required
- Medical-documentation required
Verified-Undocumented absences will count against a student's attendance and are the
very reason a student can have up to 6 absences in a class in a trimester as
required by Idaho Code. We understand there are circumstances that may
require a student to miss school and as a result have built in 6 days for these
circumstances. We have categorized these
as personal (this includes missing school for a funeral) and illness. These
absences must be verified by a parent/guardian.
Verified Pre-arranged absences are used when a student knows they will be missing school
for a specific reason beforehand. Verified Pre-arranged absences may or
may not count against a student's attendance depending on previous attendance,
current attendance, and academic standing. This decision is made by
school administration. There is a form
available from the school to be filled out scheduling pre-arranged
absences. Upon review of the form school
administration will notify a parent/guardian whether or not the absence will
count against the student's attendance.
When the school has not been notified by a
parent/guardian that a student will be absent then the absence is considered
Unverified. These absences may turn into a truancy if not verified.
When a student receives a TRUANCY the following
procedure is followed:
- TRUANCY 1: The student
will serve lunch detention each day until the school administration
determines they have completed with an assigned community service project.
The parent/guardian will be notified.
- TRUANCY 2: The student will serve lunch
detention each day until school administration determines they have
completed with an assigned community service project. The student will be
assigned Friday Night School. The parent/guardian will be notified.
- TRUANCY 3: The student will be placed in
In School Suspension until school administration determines they have
completed with an assignment on the importance of attendance, and have
created a contract with school administration. The student will complete
with an assigned community service project. The student will be assigned
Friday Night School with a parent/guardian. For students under the age of
16 years old the school will recommend a parent/guardian referral to
truancy court. The parent/guardian will be notified.
- TRUANCY 4: Student will be placed in In
School Suspension or Out of School Suspension, the student will attend a
District Discipline Hearing, school administration may pursue suspension
of driving privileges as per Idaho Code and parent/guardian will be
notified. For students under the age of 16 years old the school will refer
the student to the School Resource Officer for a citation regarding
habitual truancy.
Failure to show to the assigned consequences of
Lunch Detention or Friday Night School may result in an additional truancy or
other school discipline.
In addition to the attendance intervention at Highland High School we also have interventions and procedures for those that need academic and behavior support. All our interventions are included here. We review and revise these interventions to make them more effective every school year.

COLLEGE & CAREER ADVISOR MESSAGE
We are excited to see the
enthusiasm of the juniors that signed up and paid to take the PSAT this school
year! The PSAT will be offered on October 10th at Highland High School during the school day. All Sophomores will be taking the exam and their particiaption is paid for by the State of Idaho.
Taking the test provides juniors with National Merit Scholarship
opportunities as well as better preparation for the SAT college entrance exam
taken in April.
As stated in the
“Important Information from your School Counselors” letter that was included in
your schedule pick-up information, juniors that paid to take the exam and then
do not test, will have a $4.00 unused test fee added to their school fees. The
CollegeBoard charges HHS for each of these unused exams.
Juniors can find a code,
unique to each student, on their PSAT score sheet from the 10th
grade year. HHS does not get sent a copy of this sheet. Once an account is
created using this code, students will have the opportunity to utilize the
partnership between CollegeBoard and Kahn Academy to study for the October PSAT
as well as the April IDAHO SAT DAY college entrance exam that is paid for by
the state of Idaho.
Parents & senior students are invited to the 'How To Pay For College' Night put on by the College and Career Advisers at HHS on September 24th, 2018. This evening is focused on answering the question of 'how to pay for college' by having various representatives from Idaho State University speak about options for incoming college students. Departments include Financial Aid, Scholarship Office, College of Tech Recruiter, ISU Recruiter, Bengal Bridge Summer Program. This event will be held in the Highland High School Library at 6:30 pm.
