We hope everyone had a wonderful time over the holiday's. We are excited to get our new year rolling.
The School Board will be holding a meeting to gather public input regarding the high school and middle school boundary proposal. The meeting will be at the Pocatello High School Auditorium on Thursday 1/4/18 at 6pm.
We are proud of our student Tommy Togiai who will play football in the High School Army All-American Bowl this Saturday January 6, 2018 on NBC at 11am MST.
We are also excited and proud of our speech and debate program. We received a letter from the National Speech and Debate Association. It states, "Highland Speech and Debate is ranked among the top 2% of schools nationwide and earned membership in the Association's prestigious Societé de 400.This milestone is remarkable because it demonstrates outstanding commitment to teaching students essential life skills-including communication, research, listening, writing, and organization."
A committee on our building leadership team reviews and revises the interventions for academics, attendance and behavior at Highland High School. We have currently been working on some changes in using technology with how we identify students who are in need of academic support. As a result, we have not been sending updates home or to students. We have worked with our district technology leaders and figured out a way to more readily identify students in academic crisis so we can contact the student and their parents and connect them with tutoring and other resources. We will now be identifying these students, notifying them and their parent(s) every 3 weeks.
The intervention plan for academics includes=
HHS Academic Intervention
The goal of Highland High School is to maximize learning for all students. School administration, teachers, and school counselors will work to provide support and interventions to help students learn. If the student(s) continues to fall behind, they will be identified of needing intervention by the teacher, counselor, or school administration and referred to the Highland Intervention Team (HIT). These interventions are intended to be a positive support for students and not a punitive consequence. Tutoring is available to all students. The Highland Intervention Team (HIT) will assign an intervention and notify the parent/guardian through automated voice message of the intervention. The student will be responsible for accessing the support and interventions provided. If the student does not access the interventions and fails a class, the student may not be able to retake the class in their school schedule because school scheduling is difficult and as a result is not always adjustable. These students may be required to make-up the class by attending summer school, through a correspondence course, or by some other means.
The HIT Academic Interventions are organized as follows:
Level 1: The parent/guardian will be notified through automated voice message, email and text. The student will be responsible for meeting with their teacher or teachers in the class or classes they need support in. Together, the student and teacher will work together and create a plan for improvement.
Level 2: The parent/guardian will be notified through automated voice message, email and text. The student will be responsible to attend an after school tutoring session on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 4-5:30pm once a week in room B4 or B74. Transportation home from tutoring will not be provided by the school. The student will also be responsible for checking-in with their advisory teacher once a week to monitor their progress and provide additional support.
Level 3: The parent/guardian will be notified through automated voice message, email and text. The student will be responsible to attend tutoring sessions twice a week on Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday from 4-5:30pm in room B4 or B74. Transportation home from tutoring will not be provided by the school. The student will also be responsible for checking-in with their school counselor or school administration once a week to monitor their progress and provide support. The student's schedule will be reviewed for the possibility of any other resources that can be used to support the student in their learning.
Level 4: The parent/guardian will be notified through automated voice message, email and text. The student will meet with school administration. The student may be assessed to determine eligibility for special education services or may be referred to a District Academic Progress Committee and may be requested by school administration to attend the district alternative school for more intensive academic intervention.
Other academic interventions may be used beyond the boundaries of these levels as the Highland Intervention Team decides what is best for each student.

Be sure and purchase your $2 Ticket or Tickets for the Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello Raffle benefiting Athletics and Activities. Last year a Pocatello High School parent won a brand new Dodge Dart all expenses paid including taxes. Over $56,000 was raised for school activities in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District in last years raffle. Support athletics and activities again this year and buy raffle tickets for $2 for the chance to win a new Jeep Renegade worth $25,000 donated by Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can buy. All expenses for the car are covered, including taxes. All proceeds go to school athletics and activities.
