Highland 12/4-12/9/17

Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,

Congratulations to our Drama Team who competed at state last Friday and Saturday. They did amazing!  Kathryn Brown and Brynoch Rammell made it all the way to the finals for Ensemble Music Theatre and Danica Taylor made it to the finals for Costume Design. We are proud of these students and our Drama Coach Mr. Ted Bonman!  

The most important step in a student's success is attendance at school. Students who skip class or who are absent miss out on learning the strategies for continual improvement. They get stuck in the learning pit and are not able to get out. As other students attend school and learn the strategies that help them grow and improve, students who are absent get left behind creating a gap in learning. 

Highlands Intervention for Attendance includes the following:

Students are expected to be in each class, in their seat, on time, ready to learn, everyday.  Attendance is the most important piece in receiving an education and preparing students for future success in college and/or career. Not attending, or being late to class, results in missing valuable information and makes it extremely difficult for student learning to occur.

A student is allowed 6 absences in a class in a trimester.  7 or more absences in a class in a trimester and the student will recieve truancies.  A student is allowed 4 tardies in a class in a trimester.  5 or more tardies in a class in a trimester and the student will receive truancies.  

Even though tracking of attendance starts over each trimester, truancies received accumulate through high school and do not start over.

School assignments, assessments, instruction, or any other school work missed because a student is truant cannot be made up. Every absence beyond 6 in a class, in a trimester, and a student is considered truant and will not be able to make up the school work missed.

There are 3 types of absences a student can have-School Excused, Verified, and Unverified.

Makeup of learning opportunities for days/time missed=
Students will be expected to make up learning opportunities missed as a result of absences, with the exception of students who are suspended out of school and truant students. Time allowed for this is based on the number of days the student was absent for circumstances plus one more school day. Teachers do have the discretion to extend the number of days allowed on a case by case basis. Make up work should be completed outside of instructional time.

School Excused absences never count against a student's attendance and are those authorized by school administration.  Unfortunately, college visits set up by individuals, and not the school, do not count as school excused.
 
There are 3 types of Verified absences-documented, undocumented, and pre-arranged.

Verified-Documented absences require documentation and usually will not count against a student's attendance.  If verified-documented absences become excessive and impact learning, as determined by school administration, they may count against a student's attendance.  
Parents/Guardians will be notified in these instances.

Verified-Documented  absences include:
  • Legal-documentation required
  • Medical-documentation required

Verified-Undocumented absences will count against a student's attendance and are the very reason a student can have up to 6 absences in a class in a trimester.  We understand there are circumstances that may require a student to miss school and as a result have built in 6 days for these circumstances.  We have categorized these as personal (this includes missing school for a funeral) and illness. These absences must be verified by a parent/guardian.

Verified Pre-arranged absences are used when a student knows they will be missing school for a specific reason beforehand.  Verified Pre-arranged absences may or may not count against a student's attendance depending on previous attendance, current attendance, and academic standing.  This decision is made by school administration.  There is a form available from the school to be filled out scheduling pre-arranged absences.  Upon review of the form school administration will notify a parent/guardian whether or not the absence will count against the student's attendance.

When the school has not been notified by a parent/guardian that a student will be absent then the absence is considered Unverified.  These absences may turn into a truancy.  

When a student receives a TRUANCY the following procedure is followed:
  • TRUANCY 1: The student will serve lunch detention each day until the school administration determines they have completed with an assigned community service project. The parent/guardian will be notified.
  • TRUANCY 2: The student will serve lunch detention each day until school administration determines they have completed with 2 assigned community service projects. The student will be assigned Friday Night School. The parent/guardian will be notified.
  • TRUANCY 3: The student will be placed in In School Suspension until school administration determines they have completed with an assignment on the importance of attendance, and have created a contract with school administration. The student will complete with 5 assigned community service projects. The student will be assigned Friday Night School with a parent/guardian. For students under the age of 16 years old the school will strongly recommend a parent/guardian referral to truancy court. The parent/guardian will be notified.
  • TRUANCY 4: Student will be placed in In School Suspension or Out of School Suspension, the student will attend a District Discipline Hearing, school administration may pursue suspension of driving privileges as per Idaho Code and parent/guardian will be notified. For students under the age of 16 years old the school will strongly refer the student to the School Resource Officer for a citation regarding habitual truancy.

 Failure to show to the assigned consequences of Lunch Detention or Friday Night School may result in an additional truancy.

If you think you might be falling behind or you just need some extra guidance or encouragement, go after the help you need!
Highland offers tutoring 3 nights a week.  Talk to your teacher(s) or your counselor for more information.

10th grade
Think about what you want to study
Start thinking about possible programs of study. Programs of study at colleges and universities are generally called majors. For example, you may want to major in engineering, business, or psychology. At community and technical colleges, these areas are simply called programs and focus on the specific skills needed for the field of study.
11th grade
Research schools and programs
See what's out there and decide which programs meet your criteria and where you want to apply.
Whether you're headed to a four-year College, community college, or technical college, start researching now. It's probably best to identify a number of possibilities, so if your "Plan A" falls through, you can still pursue other fall-back plans consistent with your career goals.

12th grade
Focus on financial aid opportunities
The downtime after applications have been sent is a great time to seek out extra money for school.
Keep an eye out for important scholarship and financial aid information. Check with your counselor or CCA to see if there are any new opportunities you should be aware of. Your counselor can help you figure out what you might be eligible for.

Be sure and purchase your $2 Ticket or Tickets for the Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello Raffle benefiting Athletics and Activities.  Last year a Pocatello High School parent won a brand new Dodge Dart all expenses paid including taxes.  Over $56,000 was raised for school activities in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District in last years raffle.  Support athletics and activities again this year and buy raffle tickets for $2 for the chance to win a new Jeep Renegade worth $25,000 donated by Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Pocatello. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can buy.  All expenses for the car are covered, including taxes.  All proceeds go to school athletics and activities.  Tickets are on sale until May 21, 2018 and the drawing will take place at the new Lithia Dealership in Pocatello on May 31, 2018.  Contact the school bursar to buy tickets (208)237-1300 and/or look to buy tickets and see the car on display at home events throughout the school year.
