HHS 9/4-9/11/17

Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,

To keep up to date on all the events at Highland please check the Academics and Activities Calendars regularly under the heading below of Important HHS Sites/Links Keeping You Informed.  Also, in this newsletter each week we will be adding a short report of the previous weeks results of athletics and activities under the title HHS Athletics/Activities Weekly Report.  For real time updates follow Mr. Wallace on Twitter.

We are now charging a gate at home soccer games for both boys and girls.  All money goes towards these programs.  All athletic programs in our district are self-sustaining, meaning there is no funding slotted to keep the programs running.  For this reason, charging a gate helps pay referees, provide transportation, and pay for other needs the soccer programs may have.  The prices are included below.  Thank you for your understanding and continual support of Highland students.

Something we feel passionate about as a school district is building positive and healthy relationships with students, teaching them how to build these relationships with each other, and teaching them important virtues they will need in order to be productive citizens throughout their lives.  One tool we use to accomplish this is advisory.  In advisory students meet every Monday for 20 minutes with the same teacher for all 4 years of their high school experience.  At Highland this time is dedicated to teaching the RAM Attitudes and working on building positive and healthy relationships.  Advisory provides an adult in the building that a student can go to with needs or concerns.  With over 1600 students, making sure each student has someone they can turn to and that can help them when things are difficult is important to us as a school.  We care about each student and have tried to put routines in place to support student needs.

Looking ahead, there was a scheduling conflict with Back to School Night originally planned on Wednesday September 20th.  Back to School Night has been changed to Monday September 18th from 5:30-8pm.   The agenda for the evening is as follows:

5:30-6:45pm Family BBQ Sponsored by Connections Credit Union
6:45-7pm Welcome Back to School Opening in Auditorium
7pm-8pm Students lead parents through their daily schedule period by period meeting their teachers.

We hope to see you in attendance, it should be a fun night.

Also, coming up is PSAT Day on October 11th.  All Sophomores will be taking the PSAT and Juniors are highly encouraged to participate.  Juniors must pay to take the test, the cost is $15.  All Juniors will be taking the SAT in the spring as part of Idaho graduation requirements and so we feel that taking the PSAT will give them an advantage in preparing to do their best on the test in the spring.  Please contact the school or the school counselors to sign up your Juniors for the PSAT on October 11.

Please do not hesitate to contact school administration for questions, concerns, or frustrations.  Working together we will continue our tradition of excellence through continual improvement.

Go Highland Rams!

HHS Athletics/Activities Weekly Report 8/28-9/1/17:
Fall sports now underway and auditions have begun for an October Musical this year, Dracula.  It is great to see so many of our students grow their talents.  Swimming was sanctioned by the Idaho High School Athletics Association this year and we have a district team in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District coached by Karen Holmstead.  We had our first ever meet in Idaho Falls and the Boys won the 200 medley.  Highland also hosted the Peg Peterson Varsity Volleyball Tournament, one of the biggest volleyball tournaments in Idaho.  Our girls took 8th out of 32 teams.  Girls Varsity Cross Country took 4th out of 21 teams at the Cardinal Classic in Soda Springs.  The Band did their full performance during half time at the football game and looked and sounded great.  The football team, even though they did not get the outcome they wanted, have plenty of positive things to build on, and are just a few steps from hitting their stride.  Boys Soccer beat Bonneville and Burley this week and Girls Soccer also had a win this week against Bonneville.
