Dear Parent/Guardian, Student, and Highland Ram Supporter,
We have been doing a book study called Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Dr. Carol Dweck (2006 pages 173-175). A powerful message from the book is directed to parents and teachers. It says, "No parent/teacher thinks, "I wonder what I can do today to undermine my children, subvert their effort, turn them off learning, and limit their achievement." Of course not. We think, "I would do anything, give anything, to make my children successful." Yet many of the things we do boomerang. Our helpful judgement, our lessons, our motivating techniques often send the wrong message.
In fact, every word and action can send a message. It tells our children, our students-how to think about themselves. It can be a fixed-mindset message that says: You have permanent traits and I'm judging them. Or it can be a growth-mindset message that says: You are a developing person and I am interested in your development.
Praising children's/students intelligence harms their motivation and performance-it leads to a fixed mindset. Praising them for taking on challenges, bouncing back from mistakes, giving focused effort, and perseverance-these lead to a growth mindset. In short, our focus needs to be on praising our children/students for the growth-oriented process-what they have accomplished through practice, study, persistence, and good strategies. The more we do this the more we develop a growth mindset in our children/students.
For more watch the video or Dr. Dweck at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiiEeMN7vbQ or order the book.
We love our students at Highland High School and we appreciate all the hard work and dedication they give as Highland Ram's. Let each of us do better at growing the mindset of our children/students.
If you have questions or concerns please call or email.

Highland School Song's
Highland Fight Song
It’s for Highland we are fighting,
It’s for colors black and white,
As our Ram goes out for us
We will fight with all our might.
As our team brings in the victory
On the field or in the gym,
Highland’s teams will be victorious
And the trophies will come in.
It’s for victory, honor, valor
And the prize we run the test,
As our school up on the hill will
Always be far past the rest.
And the victories we take humbly,
Losing comes without regret,And we do all these things gladlyFor our Highlands best school yet!
Ram Power
When you say Rams
You’ve said a lot of things
Nobody else can say
When you say Rams
You’ve said you care enough to only
Want the best (of teams)
There is no other one
There’s only something less
Because the Highland Rams
Are beating all the rest
When you say RAM POWER…
You’ve said it all!
Loyalty
Highland we’re loyal to you
Highland we’ll stand beside you
To the black and white we’re true
Highland we are true
First place a victory best place
Our Rams will show the best taste
Victory is ours forever
Ours for Highland High.
Highland up on the hill our
Highland and Rams are best still
We are the students always
Loyal and true.
(and as for)* learning and honest labor
Our Rams will stand the measure
The best in all the land
We know is Highland High!
